Good evening all! Either the HST running the Inverness to London or London to Inverness service reportedly caught fire I think - someone said the engine went bang causing huge plumes of smoke.

With any luck, 1 of the following 3 things...
1. The maintenance team will fix the problem in hand !
2. If VTEC have to, they'll borrow a HST from East Midlands Trains.
3. They'll run a 225 on a HST diagram where possible and use the HST on a non-electrifed route.

Oh the magic EMT HST tree is out again!
Unlikely to borrow an EMT set tomorrow as most of the sets will be out.
If an 8 car HST is replaced by a 5 car 222 then there will be uproar!
Literally all the Sunday services are very busy already, because of the limited Sunday timetable.
The 225 fleet is already stretched as it is.
Tomorrow's chieftain will probably be cancelled, and VTEC may just be able to source an EMT HST for Monday, but the new timetable requires more HST sets so it isn't as easy as before for VTEC to hire a HST.
But given that EMT treat their intercity passengers for granted, I wouldn't be surprised when rammed 222s are used when they hire the badly needed HST for an empty VTEC service.

Tyrell/JourneyCheck says smoke but no fire, service went forward on one power car. Luckily with HSTs you can just ignore the broken/smouldering half and power on!

Power on? Limp on, or cancelled at Perth on the Northbound.

Transferring 125 maintenance from Craigentinny to Laura removes the option to change Power Cars in Edinburgh Waverley station as I've seen done in the past

1) VTEC/LNER will continue to maintain and repair HSTs at Craigentinny until the fleet is withdrawn. CrossCountry are transferring their HST maintenance away

2) Powercar swaps in the Waverley haven’t been done for years, the station is far too busy now. It’s probably more than 10 years since I last saw one. If a powercar needs to be swapped due to a fault then the train terminates and the set is run off to Craigy.

As happened in this case, the set returned to service to work 1E21 1530 Edinburgh to Kings Cross with hired XC power car 43285 attached.

IIRC, they aren't allowed (with 9 cars) to run over Slochd on a single power car? (Or is it that they are, but only if they have a clear run for some long distance up to it?)

Thought they weren't allowed beyond Blair Athol northbound on only one power car. Can't remember what, if any, "rule" there is for the southbound.
https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/scotrail-hst-introduction-updates-discussion.137911/page-7 seems to give a bunch of detail from the Scotland SA. MTU powered HSTs, with fewer than ten(!) trailing vehicles and a single engine, in good railhead conditions are allowed all the way north/south on the HML on a single engine, but are required to have relatively long clear runs at the two major summits.

That instruction has since been amended and resissued as part of the Scotrail HST introduction work.
