The Azuma livery was only ever intended to be on that set 800 101, it was for marketing purposes and the final livery hadn't been designed.

That was straight from the horses mouth as it were, Sam Jessup who was chief designer for both Virgin Trains franchises at the time, was at the Azuma event and was clear this was simply a promotional livery.

What we don't know is whether Virgin were going to use a similar livery to this one if they launched the Azuma or whether it was completely different. A ribbon logo on VTWC was just because they needed something to put on the Pendolinos when they were painted.

Sam left Virgin last year and I don't know if he did do a final Azuma livery.

I get the impression something was definitely marked up because there was an image on this forum floating around which showed an Azuma with a black front similar to my display picture.

EDIT: Found it - in the background at 1m 47s

I knocked this up in photoshop a couple of weeks back ...

Wow, that looks great, certainly much better than the other two that have been floating about!

Here's my own takes on your one...

I like what you've done with the top one!

The angled bits would need to flip direction halfway along the train, but as they are all 5 or 9 car sets, it would work.

Sam suggested on Twitter (when the livery was first rolled out / announced) that it would be enhanced to match the Azumas if they won the WCP bid... Thats why I say that there is no intention to drop the Virgin brand from the WCP

There might be no intention but the requirement will be for a generic brand.

I can't work out if they are patronising everyone or people with disabilities in particular. Either way, that video clip would insult the intelligence of the CBeebies audience.

I don't think there's anything patronising about it. The information is provided clearly, and at a steady pace.

Good chance that is probably the extent of the branding at this stage

Someone has posted a picture in the main LNER thread of an "azuma" at Perth in all white with a red LNER logo between the cab and the first door. I suspect that is what we'll see as the livery going forward

I strongly suspect that particular photo simply has an LNER logo photoshopped onto an unbranded train - and is as 'legit' as the livery posted by @59CosG95 above...

Yes, having looked at it a little more, I think it is a fake (there are plenty of picture of 800201 out and about yesterday without any LNER logos), but I'm still expecting the livery to be fairly basic like that.

Can you link to the thread/post?

So it wasn't the Highland Chieftain as the caption stated
Given that the first set isn't due to enter passenger service with LNER until December, and that will be on the Leeds/Hull diagram currently covered by HST set NL65, then definitely not!

Agreed. Red is not an LNER colour.
Green isn't a GWR colour (well, not on coaching stock anyway) but that doesn't seem to have stopped them. Of course, GWR brown would invite unwelcome comparisons particularly during disrupted service.

Garter blue on the East Coast and maroon on the West Coast would look bloody brilliant, even if neither seems particularly likely.

Maroon will probably be GNWR's colour on the West Coast.

Yes that would be good.

Then for the new LNER, how about reverting to either the original GNER colours which were dark blue with a red stripe, (or of course the orginal LNER carriages which were teak, like they have sometimes on the Severn Valley & North York Moors Railways :D )

Grantham in two years time? (on a chilly spring morning). New livery fully rolled out.
Note: revenue protection has also been reintroduced at Grantham and can be seen on both the up line and the down line with full powers of enforcement available.

(Not my image).
