Apparently it was only singled (with the long loop including Bearsden and Hillfoot) in 1989 or so. Redoubling might force modern electrification standards on the line, but the only road-over-rail bridge I can see on the singled section is Canniesburn Road.

I'm not too sure how high this project would fall in the list of priorities. Increased timetable resilience is useful, particularly for the Airdrie-Bathgate services, but it wouldn't directly lead to extra services. That said, it might end up as an unusual intervention required to add more capacity through Haymarket if it's not viable to add more recovery time at Bathgate. A good time to do any change would be when the ~1989 junction works reach end-of-life and they have to replace the junction anyway.

The partial singling of the branch was in 1959. Ref: Signal Box Register, Vol 6, section F10, p 212, Signalling Record Society. The narrative on Railscot is incorrect. The junction was converted from double lead to single and ladder for recontrol from Westerton (formerly until 1959 Milngavie) Jcn to Yoker, recontrol 21/10/90. I do not have a date for the actual works on the junction.
It was during a period as I recall that ScR were having something of a love affair with single leads.

It's surprising it lasted that long without going to a single lead. Surprising that they still did them on recontrol to yoker though. Wasn't that only just after the bellgrove crash?

What about this? http://www.scot-rail.co.uk/photo/fullsize/11739/

It's a 1960 (hand drawn?) diagram of the electrified North Clyde network which seems to show a fully doubled and electrified Milngavie branch. They weren't rationalising things back then - they even seemed to electrify the worker's platform sidings at Singer.

This seems to be a diagram as originally electrified, with the central section operating at 6.25kv. Can't remember how long that lasted, not long I think. The Blue Trains didn't like the switch, and indeed the whole system had revert to steam, as I recall.

Very interesting. The SRS are very careful, but even Homer nods. It is hard to argue with a working notice. I did use the line regularly in 1982-83, which is what caught my interest, and, apart from the junction, my memory is of it then in its current form, but if you think long enough you doubt everything.
The Singer works were vast the works passenger station lasted until 1967, I think.

Singling of Bellgrove was also part of the Yoker re-signalling, done in 1987 and the accident happened in 1989 so after the Westerton layout changed . Details in
http://www.railwaysarchive.co.uk/documents/DoT_Bellgrove1989.pdf (not easily pastable).

However Westerton is likely to be less hazardous than Bellgrove, as the signals that would have to be SPADded to cause a head-on collision are not platform starters so there is no issue with "ding ding and away". The critical signal at Bellgrove was also confusingly placed to the right.

The Scots did seem particularly keen on single lead junctions in the 1980s. Never quite understood why, as they were installed in places where a double junction without a diamond would have been feasible and both layouts have the same number of point ends.

When I was "box bashing" in the 1970's the Milngavie branch was very definitely double track all the way. Absolute block between Milngavie and Westerton.

Apparently there are even photos of the track being lifted in 1990. There are plenty of photos on RAILSCOT which really do suggest it was doubled until the Yoker resignalling.

If I'm not mistaken, the Yoker resignalling involved rationalising quite a lot of the North Clyde Electrics network. At a time when passenger numbers were in decline and the Serpell Report was recent, it made a lot of sense to try (or give the impression of) efficiency measures. If they hadn't done them, we might not have been in this position today where we need to undo them.

To keep the Scottish Wiring Thread as up to date as the GWEP/GNRP/MML threads, I've made a tracker for the EGIP/SDA/Shotts wiring too.
So here we are - the inaugural Scottish Wiring Progressometer!

Scottish Wiring Progressometer - Post 1.0 (dated 18th June 2018)
Shotts (due March 2019)

All mileages taken from Holytown Jct (1m 24ch) to Midcalder Jct (23m 11ch).
Almost all masts (well over 90%) are up. Most SPS up too.

Holytown Jct (1m 24ch) to Shotts (8m 30ch)
SPS up through
  • Carfin (1m 69ch);
  • Cleland (3m 52ch); and
  • Shotts (8m 30ch).

Gaps in the SPS are at
  • The Carfin-Cleland Cutting: drilling work underway but not yet complete;
  • The viaduct east of Cleland; and
  • Just west of Shotts.
Platforms are being extended at Carfin.
At Cleland, CCTV cameras & CIS are being installed.
Earth wire now up alongside the eastbound line at Hartwood.
At Hartwood Station (6m 62ch), the old footbridge needs to be removed. Eastbound platform doesn't look to have any other access except via Footbridge so not clear if plan here is a new footbridge or building an entirely new access route. CCTV/CIS improvements are also underway at the station.
The accommodation bridge at Hartwoodhill looks finished.
At Shotts station, Station Rd Bridge is being rebuilt, and platforms are being extended.

Shotts (8m 30ch) to Addiewell (16m 50ch)
SPS up through
  • Fauldhouse (11m 70ch); and
  • Breich (14m 00ch): masts are up but no SPS yet.

A gap in the SPS is present around Benhar Jct (11m 03ch).
At Fauldhouse Station, CCTV and CIS screens are being installed/improved.
Breich Station Footbridge needs to be removed. At present, it is unclear whether the plan is a new bridge or alternative access route to eastbound platform; or whether Breich station will be moved closer to the village or rebuilt on approximately the same site.
Addiewell Station's old footbridge has gone, and the New Footbridge almost complete. CIS screens and CCTV cameras are also being installed.

Addiewell (16m 50ch) to Midcalder Jct (23m 11ch)
SPS up through
  • Livingston South (21m 16ch).
West Calder Station (18m 28ch): New Footbridge and lifts now open. Platform extension works underway.
Livingston South rebuilt during Easter closure (29th March to April 9th, 2018). Construction of new platforms now complete.
Oakbank Viaduct has had brackets installed.
Midcalder Jct has been tied into the new wiring.

Edinburgh-Falkirk-Glasgow
All mileages taken from Queen Street High Level (0m 00ch) towards Haymarket (46m 02ch).
Electric services (Class 380s) running between Glasgow Queen Street High Level & Edinburgh Waverley via Falkirk High (21m 63ch) in regular service; due to switch to Class 385 operation in December '18.

Via Falkirk Grahamston - LIVE as of 1/5/18. This includes
  • Greenhill Upper Jct to Greenhill Lower Jct;
  • Greenhill Lower Jct to Polmont Jct via Falkirk Grahamston;
  • Grangemouth Jct;
  • The "Larbert Triangle" (Larbert Jct, Carmuirs West Jct, and Carmuirs East Jct).
Now signed off for passenger service; Class 365 operation expected to take place in July.
Wires up as far north as Larbert Jct (but no further); SPS-bearing portals extend a short way north from Larbert Jct., along with a short run of catenary wire.
Steelwork is also up in the Grangemouth Terminal area, however the extent of SPS & wiring there is not yet known.

Larbert - Stirling - Dunblane/Alloa
Stirling-Alloa route reopened on 16th April after wiring closure. Alloa station now has contact & catenary wires installed; the extent of them travelling to Stirling is not yet known.
Within Larbert Stn, all masts and earth wires are now up. The Up Line through Larbert now has catenary & contact wires.
Earth wires now going up around Plean; masts are fully bedanglied around the M9.
TTCs up to the north of Hope's Crossing (between Cowie & Bannockburn).
Lots of masts (mostly single masts, but a few TTCs too plus a pair to bear a portal boom) now up to the south of Millhall Rd Footbridge, between Kerse Rd & the A91.
Kerse Rd bridge undergoing reconstruction.
Many masts up on both sides of the track around Cornton, just north of the diversion with the Kincardine Lines.
Many masts have now sprung up at the south end of Bridge Of Allan, along with a handful to the north.
First pile in at the SW end of Dunblane.

Do let me know if there's any changes I might have missed!

Both lines at Larbert station now wired, not sure about Down Loop. Still a gap (circa 4 TTC's) at Cowie awaiting Scottish Power works.

Theres a gap between Larbert Junction and the start of the wires. I've noticed this on a lot of the other schemes and surmise its an additional safety measure to keep the live in use stuff physically separate from the in construction stuff.

Installing the connection to the existing requires an isolation, so probably more difficult to organise than just building new overhead elsewhere.

Indeed - I recall the GWEP had a 1/4 mile gap between the new overheads west of Maidenhead & the existing live section from Maidenhead east to Paddington before it was all joined up last winter.

Good update. Thanks.

The only thing I'll add is that the Parkhead bridge on the Shotts line at Polbeth that I wasn't sure if it required removal has now been demolished.

A new bridge had been built last year as part of the new High School project but the old bridge was only demolished last month.

Many thanks for the update.

Just one thing: it is forum rules not to use abbreviations, acronyms, or jargon without first saying what they mean. For example there is SPS (Scottish Prison Service), TTC (The Time Capsule, a leisure centre which I believe is/was in Coatbridge), and CIS (Co-operative Insurance Services) that may have an alternative meaning depending upon the situational context. Could these be explained what they mean in railway terms?

Ah, my apologies.
SPS - Small Part Steelwork; the "dangly bits" that hang off the masts e.g. registration arms.
TTC - Twin Track Cantilever; the "gallows" style masts with 2 sets of small part steelwork on it.
CIS - Customer Information Screen; the "dot matrix" displays shown on most modern stations.

I'll add them in the source code for any future updates.

And the Shotts line is getting resignalled alongside with the electrification project. Seen new signals along the route. Hope I'm right.

SPS up through
  • Carfin (1m 69ch);
  • Cleland (3m 52ch); and
  • Shotts (8m 30ch).

Gaps in the SPS are at
  • The Carfin-Cleland Cutting: drilling work has been undertaken but not sure if it is yet complete;

Breich Station is closed for 12 weeks, from 23rd of June. Platforms will be reprofiled.

Parkhead Bridge, nr Polbeth (between Livi South & West Calder) has been demolished & its replacement rebuilt.
Midcalder Jct has been tied into the new wiring.

Within Larbert Stn, both main lines now have catenary & contact wires; the Down Passenger Loop was wired over the night of 23/6/18.
Earth wires now going up around Plean; masts are fully bedanglied around the M9.
TTCs up to the north of Hope's Crossing (between Cowie & Bannockburn).
A gap of around 4 TTCs can be found around Cowie, awaiting works from Scottish Power to alter pylons.
Lots of masts (mostly single masts, but a few TTCs too plus a pair to bear a portal boom) now up to the south of Millhall Rd Footbridge, between Kerse Rd & the A91.
Kerse Rd bridge undergoing reconstruction.
Large number of masts (single masts, TTCs and a two-track portal) are up in the area around Stirling North Signal Box; a few piles remain unmasted at present.
Many masts up on both sides of the track around Cornton, just north of the diversion with the Kincardine Lines.
Many masts have now sprung up at the south end of Bridge Of Allan, along with a handful to the north. Boomless TTCs have now gone up on the northbound platform in Bridge of Allan station.
First pile in at the SW end of Dunblane. Concrete base with a cable embedded now in at the northern end of the station; possibly for a replacement signal?

Ah, my apologies.
SPS - Small Part Steelwork; the "dangly bits" that hang off the masts e.g. registration arms.
TTC - Twin Track Cantilever; the "gallows" style masts with 2 sets of small part steelwork on it.
CIS - Customer Information Screen; the "dot matrix" displays shown on most modern stations.

I'll add them in the source code for any future updates.
Thank you ironically I was about to post asking what all these codes meant.
Also please can someone explain chains to me verses miles or km? .
I'm.not familiar with what they all mean.
Kind regards.
