Whilst browsing the manual of tne London Birmingham addon, I read that train companies were unhappy with simulations becoming too accurate. Lest people should use them for less than honourable purposes. Bear in mind this is the 2001 game. What kind of things might train operators have had in mind?

There was a Eurostar that had been done very early on. Eurostar company caught wind of a website showing screenshots from MSTS where the Eurostar was crashing/crashed and were unhappy with the model being used in that way.

Many other operators were then unhappy with their liveries being used on rolling stock, particularly current liveries. Usually there was a workaround - release the stock in bare colours for payment, then free downloads for the current liveries.

Some companies became anxious that people would be able to access a fair amount of route knowledge from the simulations were they realistic and cause problems with that. JustTrains did a ChannelTunnel type product that was completely reworked and not a representation of the actual routes in France - they say it wasn’t meant to be a realistic representation, but read into that what you will.

As touched on above, it's pretty much all to do with branding and having had to deal with it many times myself, it's a minefield. Users showing screenshots of crashed trains really didn't go down well and there were also early videos on ShareMyWorld (long before Youtube!) showing the same thing, that went down like a lead balloon. The effects are still out there and some TOC's still won't alow the use of their liveries/branding.

I've never had one company state that routes themselves should be limited in order to restrict knowledge, far from it. Some routes that the public can buy are now even used in some TOC classrooms.

In this example, I recall the original plan to feature Virgin Trains-liveried Pendolinos was dropped last minute, with Pendolinos still featuring, but in Intercity Swallow livery instead.

The same happened for the Pendolinos for the Railworks (now TS2018) back in 2012, they were were too in Intercity Swallow livery, plus that DLC also included Class 390s in LMS and GNER liveries as well. It is only last year that DTG had got the licence to use the Virgin logo and they then brought out the all-new Class 390 model in Virgin Trains livery.

Any trains that would involve a logo that are not licensed by Dovetail Games, Armstrong Powerhouse or any commercial companies are omitted.

This sort of thing used to happen with racing games as well. Not sure if its still the case but some manufactures in some games don't like to see their cars covered in dirt or damage.

But there's nothing better than a grubby race car!

I forget which game it was, possibly the first Gran Turismo, where it was impossible to flip the cars, specifically as the manufactures didn't want the realistic models of their cars flipped.

I believe that is is part of (or the whole) reason why the Grand Theft Auto franchise uses made up brands on the cars in game.
