Has anyone stayed at the Station Hotel at Hucknall? I'm staying there next month, any info would be great. Thanks.

Never stayed there but it’s certainly a nice real ale pub for drinking in. The downstairs pub was completely refurbished a few years ago and was taken over by the nearby Lincoln Green Brewery in Hucknall. I presume the rooms upstairs were also refurbished at the time. Nice friendly pub for drinking in and very friendly welcoming staff.

Thanks for that ashworth. I shall certainly give some of the Lincoln Green ale a go :D
I've only been to Hucknall once before and that was back in 2006 when I was doing a bit of tram bashing and I just went to the local wetherspoons for something to eat and a quick pint.
This time I'm going to do a few shacks on the Nottingham to Mansfield line in the afternoon and some real ale pubs around Hucknall in the evening.

Anyone got any suggestions for Gdansk? Arriving by plane in September (not too late, hopefully) and travelling on by train the next day.

So one that has been mentioned before but just to add positive comments. Waverley Hotel in Crewe. Been there the last couple of nights. A few minutes from the station, a few minutes from a Sainsbury’s local. It has a bar, the breakfast is more than adequate and included, there’s a car park if you drive there and catch the train which I did. Friendly staff and clean and pleasant rooms.

Fan run on time >5 minutes so a few lost points here but a working ‘over mirror’ light so you can get around that there.

Those who want to spend some time on the Pembroke branch would do well to consider the Belgrave Hotel at Tenby - the sea view rooms also afford a view of the line. Not close enough to read the numbers, but easy enough to see what's running and it's only a five minute walk from the station...

HaHa...'hot receptionist'!:D

Lots of recommendations for Premiers and Travelodges...I guess you know where you are with these. Indeed an FCC driver mate of mine always books ahead in the Prem Inn, Blossom Street. York, with his family (5 mins walk fro station): very happy with it...good bar etc though York has so many good pubs!

To try to rebalance in favour of good family run B+Bs, I recommend 'Seawards Guest House' in Falmouth...5 mins from Town station. I know Falmouth a bit out on limb, but a crackin' place...incidentally Seawards is a bottles throw from the Pavillion where they hold good gigs and the Falmouth beer festival in November.

More B+Bs please.
Hi caliwag, If you are down in Cornwall and fancy somewhere apart from Falmouth or a change of scene I know the perfect place. Overlooking the line around mounts bay and the Long Rock TMD and very close to the station, as far southwest as you can get by rail for a few nights or even a week or two. I know the perfect place to relax. Overlooking Penzance harbour and St Michael's mount, a lovely place to be with a bonus grandstand view of the station...

Update to the above post, having made a note of the room numbers:

You'll need to ensure you book a room in the following range if you want a view of the line:

500 to 512
536, 537 or 538
600 to 612

The 4th floor would also be OK, but you'll start getting the tops of trees in the way.

3rd floor - you'll be looking through gaps in the trees.

Below that - no chance of a worthwhile view at all!
My theory is proven and this is a definite recommendation for railway based stays. Here's the view from the 5th floor...IMG_20180903_155219.jpg

That could be useful for any very early starts from St Pancras or Kings Cross :)

Indeed , i may use it in future for early eurostar departure . I arrived at St Pancras and to just cross the road to get to my accommodation was highly convenient, Premier inn too .

Travelodge, Salford Quays

A new Travelodge for me (only because it was cheap at the time of booking). Usual modern Travelodge rooms, located around a 5 minute walk (maybe more, maybe less depending on traffic lights) from Salford Quays Metrolink stop on the Eccles line.

Nearby Tesco express, bit of road noise but I guess it depends which side of the hotel you end up on.

One I would use again

I’m staying in the Star Inn at Beeston tonight and tomorrow night. The room is very nice and it’s en-suite. The bar downstairs is excellent with about 10 handpumps. It’s opposite the tram stop and a short walk from the railway station. There’s a big Tesco across the road too.

I almost stayed there a couple years ago, one thing which put me off is the reviews saying about the access during pub closure time.

Another hostel which I decided to try out for the recent GBRF tour (as it required an early start from Victoria & Euston)

Located around a 5 minute walk from Kings Cross with a few shops nearby, next door to a co-op, so good for those arriving late or departing early.

However the room I was in (4 person room with 2 bunk beds) was facing the road, which being Central London was busy pretty much all the time so there was a lot of road noise (and also a bit of noise from the corridor as they play music via the PA system during the evenings)

Not sure if the rooms on the opposite side will be any better but it was a choice of being warm with the window closed, or being slightly less warm with the window open and it being noisy. Not that many toilets either.

One to (probably) avoid

I had no problems with access when the pub was closed. You go out a door on the first floor and down some steps on the outside and then out another door to the pavement at the the front. You are given 2 keys, one for your room and the other for the door at the top of the steps and the door to the pavement.

Ibis Budget, Sheffield Arena

Located near the Sheffield Arena (who would have guessed?!), around a 5 minute walk from the arena tram stop. (So probably not the best if you are having a super early start or super late finish).

Usual Ibis hard bed but the room was functional, a decent shower, so ideal for using it as a base. Friendly staff on the reception.

It works. Not too far (~10 minutes) from the station. Good breakfast. Staffed until late enough for anyone coming off the last train from Inverness (the one that arrives at 22:52) - phone ahead in case though, one never knows. Lovely stone house. Everything worked when I was there. Good rooms, and big.

Sea View Guest House Douglas Isle of Man.
Me and Polar Bear stayed here during the recent forum trip for the Transport Festival.
The room was nice with ensuite bathroom and the breakfast was great.
Nothing was to much for the owners and the location is just of the Central Promenade and really easy to get to the Ferry Port , Electric Railway & Steam Railway.

Mountbatten Hotel, Devonport, Plymouth

Located less than a 5 minute walk from Devonport station and near a couple bus routes to reach the city centre (because the service levels at Devonport are not the best). Very friendly staff, a comfortable bed and a good location where there was pretty much no outside noise from a room overlooking the road. A Co-Op & other takeaway options are located around a 5 minute walk away, and the breakfast was very tasty. Probably one of my best hotel stays I've had. (I believe looking at Google Maps it is a good 30 minute walk from Plymouth station, but hotels near Plymouth station tend to be expensive]

[I was in a single room with shared toilet, the rooms had a small shower cubicle & sink]

Which hotel is this from, please? Looks like it has good prospects...
 That photo was taken by my best friends son. I believe it was taken from a university building in Cardiff. He gave me permission to use the photo (actually he was very keen), but I forgot to ask him where he took it from.
I’ll ask now and report back.

Oh... a University block. That sort of would make my plans impossible, then, wouldn't it?!
I don’t know Peter, perhaps you could wear a cool band T-shirt and pretend that you’d left your keys in the Students Union bar..?

Acton Travelodge

A newish branch of Travelodge located less than 5 minutes walk from North Acton LU station (Central line). It looked like it had an on-site bar/restaurant.

My room had AC, plenty of plug & USB sockets and no outside noise, also had a rather excellent shower. I will probably book again, far enough outside centre London to avoid premiums but with North Acton being in Zone 2/3 helps the cost.

Certainly it has replaced Croydon for my "Travelodge of preference" for London. Nearby Tesco Express

I sometimes stay here on occaisional nights in London.Obviously any events at Wembley stadium increases prices ; does get fully booked at times as only a small (2 floors ? ).Obvious advantage is thats its on top of Wembley Central station (served by London Overground to/from Euston and Watfrd Junc, ),as well as Bakerloo line and some LM trains and in Zone 4. Oposite small Tesco, usual fast food outlets nearby ,and Costa coffee on the corner. On many bus routes.

I've just received a near identical photo from a cousin of mine who says he took it from somewhere called the Clayton Hotel so there may yet be hope for a stay in the area with a suitable view... :D

What are the noise levels like?

Travelodge, Macclesfield Central

Located pretty much outside the station at Macclesfield, It's an older hotel, but suitable for somewhere to base yourself.

There is a bit of noise from the trains, but that line doesn't have much in the way of overnight services. Tesco located around a 7 minute walk away plus a pizza hut next door.
