Firstly Mr KJ I sincerely apologise. I didn't mean it like it came across:oops: My turn of phrase, didnt mean I was bored reading about it, in fact you couldnt be further from the truth, it adds a new dimension to the hobby. I merely meant your idea has seen more than a few people follow your lead. I'm not bored reading about it, similar to all who do shack scratching, it intrigues me how much book work or data files you all have. Log books must be akin to an accountants book work. My bookwork is notebooks with numbers of stuff seen and moves made, where and when and I have 4 notebooks worth alone in a shoebox in the bottom of my wardrobe.

To your report, i'm sure the flashes of red pen will be a notable event but given your requirements, i was shocked to see a 156 among them.
Congrats on clearing the 314s for 10miles. I look forward to the next instalment.

LSG - Apologies if I grabbed the wrong end of the stick! There's plenty of us "mileage men" around - you only have to look at 55013 of this parish.
All my records are on the PC now so my Haulage Book is a Virtual Haulage Book in reality. But Mileage, Shack Scratching, carriages, track. I do the lot! And yes, the 156 is an embarrassment as are a few other lurkers in the Required For Red Pen Department. I'm thinking of a certain flat front 150 that is now enjoying Northern climes after a few years in the South West and a trio of Tin Rockets that do nothing more than totter around the Lincolnshire Fens. It all comes as a result of having several years away from front line bashing although thankfully, I have always noted down my haulages and kept the records too. Just a pity I did not note down carriages from the outset - I only started that caper about two or so years ago. Just that it's a right pain having to do all of them again just to get a record of the carriages although to be honest, it gives me something to chase after on the daily grind - current focus is Southern 377s and 455s.

As an aside, next instalment is about 50% drafted so should appear in a few days

A productive day in the Glasgow area Mr Keith :)

Good news on clearing the 707s, plus getting all the 314s into your 800 chain club :)
Thanks - Just hope you are not bored with Glasgow .....

The 156 is an embarrassment!! , give over. You've cleared the 314s for haulage and they're in the 10 mile club. I still need some for sight. I still need 1 156 just to clear them for sight too.
That's what I mean about being intrigued about how others go about this hobby, having to ride in each coach, I think I'm right in believing 55013 does similar too. I'd be fascinated to see the paperwork, a 700 has 9 coaches do you document each coach youve had, (this is just an example and coach number made up for an example) say 700001s coach number 1, is 69001is it documented, 69001 from Thameslink to Sutton, then similar for each coach. If so, that's a **** load of documentation. That's without the marking of the Bakers or Quails of this world and shacks visited.
I look forward to the reply to the above question and the next part of the trip report.

I started recording coach numbers towards the end of 2017- makes things more interesting as if you get a dud for haulage as the unit number, you can go for a specific coach number instead. I only count the coach if I've travelled in it from A-B, and only one coach per headcode. I record it in Word on my phone as such:

Willington (1) - Derby (6A)
170636 (56636) : 1M99

It's a lot easier to find the coach number now as most have the number on the inside someplace and can be noted once boarded; although I try and eyeball the number of the outside as well.

How can someone get bored with the variety on offer in Glasgow? :)

Thursday 12th July

Today’s objective would be to head back to Glasgow and see how many winners would drop into my lap (perhaps 156505 would be one of those?). Starting off nice and early, it was a short walk to Haymarket where I left Rex and Mark to fiddle with their cameras while I got on the move.

158869 Haymarket to Inverkeithing
68033 Inverkeithing to Haymarket – WINNER and into The Ten Mile Club
158708+158731 Haymarket to Waverley - 158708 = WINNER. The initial plan was to come straight back with 158708 but it ended up going ECS to Glenrothes.
380013+380111 Waverley to Haymarket - 380111 = WINNER. Plans change quickly and the idea was to go through to Queen Street but when I got to Haymarket, I received information that my last Scotrail 158 had just gone into Waverley. Thankfully a quick consultation with RTT revealed that I would not have long to wait for ....
158701 Haymarket To Dalgetty Bay - 158701 = WINNER and joined The Ten Mile Club. Only one class 158 left to get now (158848 from Northern)
170393 Dalgetty Bay to Haymarket - 170393 joins The Ten Mile Club
380107 Haymarket to Waverley - WINNER
170430 Waverley to Edinburgh Gateway New shack (Edinburgh Gateway) plus a desperate attempt to get more mileage off of ….
158708 Edinburgh Gateway to Haymarket - Still not cleared for 10 miles and a desperate +1 onto ......
380114 Haymarket to Linlithgow - 380114 = WINNER and into The Ten Mile Club
170459 Linlithgow to Haymarket - Thought that this was needed for 10 miles but not so. At this point I was really wondering whether I was going to to Glasgow but the decision was made withn the following move ....
380005+380116 Haymarket to Glasgow Queen Street - Double WINNERs and into The Ten Mile Club
334002+334009 Glasgow Queen Street to Dalmuir via Yoker - Both into The Ten Mile Club
320415 Dalmuir to Hyndland via Yoker - Another one into The Ten Mile Club
320321+320411 Hyndland to Blantyre - 320411 = WINNER and both into The Ten Mile Club
320320 Blantyre to Newton - 320320 into The Ten Mile Club
318250+318268 Newton to Hamilton West – Fill in move
320305 Hamilton West to Cambuslang - 320305 joins The Ten Mile Club
320301 Cambuslang to Motherwell via Bellshill - 320301 into The Ten Mile Club
320310+320417 Motherwell to Glasgow Central via Bellshill - 320417 = WINNER and joins The Ten Mile Club.
320308+320412 Glasgow Central Low Level to Scotstounhill - 320412 joins The Ten Mile Club
320415 Scotstounhill to Hyndland
318262 Hyndland to Clydebank - Got off because I thought I had cleared it for 10 miles but no! Thank fully another requirement was right behind
321413 Clydebank to Dalmuir - Cleared for 10 miles and into The Ten Mile Club
318262 Dalmuir to Clydebank - 318262 finally cleared for 10 miles. The Ten Mile Club is certainly getting a few new members today.
318266 Clydebank to Hyndland - Another 318 into The Ten Mile Club
320414 Hyndland to Cambuslang – 320414 = WINNER. Class clearance Cannons sound for the 320s but no doubt when 320401-404 enter traffic, I will have to fire off the CCC again!
320319+320416 Cambuslang to Glasgow Central
170404+170414 Glasgow Queen Street to Polmont - 170414 into The Ten Mile Club (only three Scottish 170s to go for 10 miles)
170428+170451 Polmont to Linlithgow
170461 Linlithgow to Haymarket

Well that was a truly fantastic day with eleven, yes eleven, winners for me in a part of the world where winners are not the easiest of things to come by. That little clear-out leaves me with just two ScotRail units to find – 156505 and 380007. OK, there are a few units that have been the subject of Bus Stop Bashes so are in need of mileage injections but until the 385s enter traffic, ScotRail will only see a maximum of two more swipes of the red pen. (Stop Press - the 385s have apparently entered revenue earning service as of today, July 24th, if the BBC is to be believed). But twenty new members of The Ten Mile Club is a real boost. At this rate, there’s going to be virtually nothing to get from Scotland!

Now, what will day three bring? Factoring in that it was Friday the 13th - and of course, I am not at all superstitious - stay tuned.

Sounded like a productive day for your big red pen in the central belt, well done for getting down to just 2 more Scottish units left (until those additional 320/4s start arriving and excluding the 385s)

Indeed, the first couple 385s have entered service today :)

LSG - you have to wait no more for day three! (And there will be a day 4 in due course but that's not Scottish based)

Friday 13th July

After the previous day’s successes, what was there left to tempt me apart from a fistful of mileage candidates? Well for starters, the Edinburgh trams needed another examination as I had only got nine of them so with 12 daytime workings, a minimum of three strokes of the Great Red Pen could be expected. Given that Rex and Mark wanted to be up early to catch the Edinburgh rush hour, I felt that this was the opportune time to attack the trams so the following moves went into The Haulage Book.

264 Haymarket to Ballgreen - WINNER
262 Ballgreen to Haymarket - WINNER
268 Haymarket to Ballgreen - WINNER
277 Ballgreen to Haymarket - WINNER
265 Haymarket to Ballgreen - WINNER
251 Ballgreen to Haymarket - WINNER
254 Haymarket to Ballgreen - WINNER
252 Ballgreen to Haymarket – WINNER
There were two winners (260 and 276) more about but the peak hour curfew was about to be lifted so I needed to rendezvous with Rex and Mark to check whether anything of interest to me had shown up. It was almost a “nil return” apart from a couple of workings that I had eyeballed and to be honest, there were more chances of tempting items over in Glasgow.
365519+365521 Haymarket to Croy - 365521 cleared for 10 miles
156445 Croy to Glasgow Queen Street - 156445 cleared for 10 miles and included a trip via the Garthouse DPL
334037 Glasgow Queen Street Low Level to Dalmuir via Singer - cleared for 10 miles
334020+334035 Dalmuir to Hyndland via Yoker - 334035 joins The ten Mile Club
318253+318260 Hyndland to Garscadden - 318253 into The Ten Mile Club
318251+320317 Garscadden to Hyndland
320311 Hyndland to Bearsden - 320311 joins the elite in The Ten Mile Club and despite a shack score, there were no bears on hand for sighting
334009+334040 Bearsden to Hyndland
334013+334027 Hyndland to Dalmuir via Yoker - 334027 cleared for 10 miles
320414 Dalmuir to Jordanhill - Another 10 mile clearance and a new shack score as well
334012 Jordnahill to Kilpatrick - Going well with a further addition to The Ten Mile Club and a new shack as a Brucie Bonus
318264 Kilpatrick to Glasgow Queen Street Low Level - Still successfully recruiting for The Ten Mile Club
318267 Glasgow Queen Street Low Level to Partick

So, with very little to get on the Clydeside electric lines, I took a look at the Clockwork Orange
124+204+133 Partick to Cessnock - 124= WINNER
109+205+114 Cessnock to Partick - 114 = WINNER
111+201+126 Partick to Cessnock - 111 = WINNER
119+121+128 Cessnock to Partick - 119 = WINNER
113+129+131 Partick to Cessnock - WINNER x 3 (111, 129 and 131)
101+201+120 Cessnock to Partick - 120 = WINNER
106+203+116 Partick to Cessnock - 116 = WINNER
102+207+118 Cessnock to Partick - WINNER x 2 (102 and 118)

Then it was back to the full-sized railway
334023+334024 Partick to Hyndland
320311+320316 Hyndland to Glasgow Central Low Level - 320316 cleared for 10 miles and thus all current 320s into the Ten Mile Club
380113 Glasgow Central to Paisley Gilmore Street - Cleared for 10 miles
380021 Paisley Gilmore Street to Glasgow Central

I was of course keeping an eye out for 156505 but everything but that one seemed to appear but 380007 was resolutely stuck on the blocks and I was not going anywhere until it did! The lines out through Paisley were in disarray due to an earlier failure with cancellations left, right and centre but after a fester of around half an hour, I was rewarded …
380007 Glasgow Central Low Level to Johnstone - WINNER, sounding of the Class Clearance Cannons and into The Ten Mile Club
380110 Johnstone to Paisley Gilmore Street – Would have cleared for 10 miles if I had stayed on to Central but I knew another 10-miler was immediately behind
380115 Paisley Gilmore Street to Glasgow Central - Cleared for 10 miles
380110 Glasgow Central to Paisley Gilmore Street - Cleared for 10 miles
380015+380022 Paisley Gilmore Street to Glasgow Central – 380015 cleared for 10 miles
365517+365525 Glasgow Queen Street to Linlithgow
170420+170474 Linlithgow to Haymarket

My arrival at Haymarket brought another successful day to a close. Winners on the real railway came to just one but at least there were more soundings of the Class Clearance Cannons – for 380007 and also for 320316 (the latter being my last 320 into the Ten Mile Club). I must not forget the eight winning Edinburgh trams (10 left to get) and the 11 winning Glasgow Subway cars (only 7 of those left including the long out of service 122). With all the distractions away from the real railway, 17 additions to The Ten Mile Club were also very welcome. And with another three shacks out of the way, yet another successful day, despite it being Friday the 13th. Over the past two and a half days, the Clydeside electrics have certainly taken a hammering with future pickings in that part of the world now very thin as all I need now are two 318s and nine 334s for 10 miles until the new 320s turn up. But hopefully there will be masses of 385s in traffic when I next return to Scotland - better stock up on those red pens!

Given that I only make an annual excursion north of the border, if there's not a shed-load of 385s in service by the time of my next visit, I'll be getting extremely worried.

Not a great deal to go for then in Jock Rail Territory. 156505 has recently been in the North East. The jock rail 156 working, now gets a run out to Middlesbrough and back, then up to Morpeth before returning on the run to Carlisle later on that evening. Its been christened the Haggis Express by those on the Durham Coast.
Red pen has been like a flashing blade, got a shock when I saw all the trams in red, its great, when stuff falls like that.
Also congrats on clearing the 380s too.
Oh I wonder where else you've been.
Time will tell.

Another successful day in Scotland :)

Good luck with the Edinburgh trams as they can take a good few attempts to get cleared

Still not finished writing up day 4 of last month's trip but a couple of significant winners came my way on the daily commute on August 3rd. Since Thameslink went into meltdown mode, I have been using a convoluted route to get to my place of employment - it's basically involved a succession of Southern 377s which has been pretty useful in getting my 377 carriage requirements down. I'd barely left St Helier on a pair of 377s working a peak hour London Bridge service when the air went a delicate shade of blue. If I'd waited a minute or so, on of two required 700/0s, 700060, would have fallen into my lap. Ah well, no chance of bagging that this morning but a quick rifle through RTT showed that it was possible to grab it on my way home. I put two hands together and said a very nice prayer to The Railway Gods in the hope that it would stick to diagram for the next eight or nine hours. I carried on with my 377 moves and found myself at Hackbridge and waiting for the next 700 to Herne Hill where I'd drop back a few minutes for a pair of Southeastern 465 into Blackfriars. Imagine my surprise and glee when 700059 rolled in - that's my other required 700/0 in the bag without any effort at all!
I spent the day at work wondering whether the Railway Gods had even heard my prayer let alone taken any notice of it. RTT seemed to indicate that 700060 had stuck to diagram so with work completed, I rocked up to Blackfriars and first of all did a fill-in move to London Bridge and back, scoring two 700/1s in the process. Happy Days! Now for the final piece of the jigsaw. But no, there was a Beckenham Junction train due out of Blackfriars a few minutes in front of what should be 700060. Shall I risk a mirco leap to Elephant just to gain another carriage from a class 465. Why not? The 465 left a few seconds late but made it to Elephant with a couple of minutes to switch platforms and yes, the Sutton rolled in with 700060. Joy of Joys, 8-car 700s cleared at last (and not before time. Now just a mass of 700/1s to get along with a host of carriages from both variants.

Looks like a great move.
I can't wait to get back to Scotland; as it happens Mrs 13 and I are having a two week holiday up there in September and I'm sure one or two train rides will be enjoyed :)

As an aside - I starting doing coaches as it made the commute home a bit more interesting.
It's something I do but, other than local stuff, I don't get too bogged down in it - as long as I've a recorded run in at least one vehicle then I'm reasonably happy.
I couldn't imagine trying to ride in every coach that works into London, just getting the units is hard enough!

Saturday 14th July

Today we were supposed to be heading home. Rex and Mark had arranged an itinerary that saw them stopping off at various points along the East Coast Main Line to photograph various things while I had one stop-off before we were all to meet in Doncaster for the final leg southwards. I managed to log only three journeys on the real railway, the first being

220014 Haymarket to Newcastle This is normally HST but consequent upon engineering work further south, was a Vomit Comet today. Boo Hiss.

At Central, I immediately descended to the subterranean depths and began my patronisation of the Metro system. I needed six cars outright and plenty more to actually ride in, having had them as part of a pair and ridden in the other one of the pair. I also needed some track and a decent number of shacks. I had seven hours to see what I could bag.
4063+4088 Central to South Gosforth - 4063 new to ride
4007+4030 South Gosforth to Airport All the required track out of the way, a new shack and first time riding in 4030
4060+4066 Airport to Wansbeck Road - New shack
4051+4065 Wansbeck Road to Callerton Parkway - New shack
4051+4065 Callerton Parkway to Kingston Park - New shack
4056+4064 Kingston Park to Bank Foot - New shack. 4064 = WINNER
4015+4052 Bank Foot to Regent Centre - New shack. 4015 required for a ride
4049+4081 Regent Centre to Fawdon - New shack and Airport branch complete
4054+4076 Fawdon to South Gosforth. 4054 required for a ride
4004+4067 South Gosforth to Palmersville - New shack
4012+4032 Palmersville to Shiremoor - New shack
4070+4079 Shiremoor to Northumberland Park - New shack
4044+4087 Northumberland Park to Monkseaton - New shack
4045+4069 Monkseaton to West Monkseaton - New shack and 4045 required for a ride
4010+4082 West Monkseaton to Cullercoats - New shack
4009+4068 Cullercoats to Whitley Bay - New shack and 4068 required for a ride
4032+4053 Whitley Bay to Percy Main - New shack
4044+4087 Percy Main to Meadow Well - New shack
4006+4031 Meadow Well to Hadrian Road - New shack and 4006 required for a ride
4010+4082 Hadrian Road to Howden - New shack
4063+4088 Howden to Chillingham Road - New shack
4033+4053 Chillingham Road to Walkergate - New shack
4017+4080 Walkergate to Manors - New shack
4063+4088 Manors to Byker - New shack (Tyne & Wear Metro shacks cleared)
4077+4090 Byker to Monument and 4090 required for a ride
4054+4076 Monument to Gateshead
4042+4072 Gateshead to Monument - 4072 = WINNER
4036+4048 Monument to Felling - 4048 required for a ride
4001+4083 Felling to Pelaw
4003+4014 Pelaw to Felling - 4003 = WINNER
4028+4059 Felling to Heworth - 4028 required for a ride
4011+4078 Heworth to Pelaw - 4011 required for a ride
4056+4064 Pelaw to Monument
4041+4086 Monument to Central - 4041 required for a ride
4049+4081 Central to Monument
4035+4074 Monument to Gateshead - 4035 required for a ride
4028+4059 Gateshead to Central

And so that was my time done on the Metro with three outright winners (three more to go) and a further 13 cars previously logged but not actually ridden as I had used the other half of the pair (another 13 of those to go as well). I'd managed to see all the workings that were out to play so the remaining requirements must have been buried in the depotBut the key thing was all Metro track now covered as well as all shacks visited, many albeit for just a few minutes. Now to head south and home.

91127 Newcastle Central to Doncaster - Mark joined me at York and seemed to have had a successful day. We then met up with Rex at Doncaster who had also had an equally successful day. All that was left was to join the next service south and conclude a great four days away.

91128 Doncaster to Kings Cross.

That just left me the task of totting up all the winners etc. The headline here had to be the 15 winners from the real railway which was way beyond expectations. It was a tossup between 156494 and 158701 as to which one would gain the accolade of “Winner of the Trip” as both were significant additions to The Haulage Book - 158701 just edging it on account of IS based 158s being far from easy to nail down. Add in eight winning Edinburgh trams, 11 Glasgow Subway and three Tyne & Wear Metro to give a grand total of 37 winners which, by my standards, is nothing short of excellent . Then there’s over 40 new recruits to The Ten Mile Club, eight Scotrail shacks and 22 Tyne & Wear Metro shacks which simply allows me to say “WOW, that was some trip!”

Alas, there’s no more trips of any sort in the pipeline at present but once I do start wandering again, I’ll report back.

Looks like a great move.

Mr 13 - cannot wait to hear about your upcoming Scottish escapade! I'm sure that you'll get out and about a bit on the rails . And even not, your tales of visits to various heritage sites are an equally good read. Like you, I started doing coaches as something to liven up the daily commute. Given that my daily commute can easily be adjusted to incorporate any or all of South Western Railway, Southern, Thameslink or Southeastern as well as parts of the Underground network, I have swathes of coaches available. Outside that, I just try not to travel in the same coach a second time as I have them all logged. Trouble is, I only started doing coaches a couple of years ago so it's very much a game of catchup and the lowest priority of all. In descending order, it's winning locos, winning units, Ten Mile Club, track, shacks, coaches to ride in. So a new coach vs a winning unit - no contest!

The big writing made my eyes go funny Keith . I enjoyed reading about it all though, lots of interesting lines around Glasgow.
Very nice.

Mr Cowley, hopefully your eyes are feeling better now. Yes, I enjoy roaming around Glasgow but there's less and less to get

A productive day on the Tyne & Wear Metro for you Mr Keith, I hope 4022 isn't one of your requirements as I believe that one has been scrapped following an accident on depot (as its at the rear of the Arriva place in Bristol) :)

Hopefully some tasty railtours will pop up which takes your fancy as well :)

Mr Kite, thankfully 4022 does not feature on my requirement lists. And yes, I'd put my day on the Tyne & Wear Metro down as productive too! At least when I go back, there'll be no distraction such as track or shack bashing so I reckon a few hours (including the peaks) on the core section will see a further dent in requirements.

The only railtour on my radar at the moment is The Return of the Short Haired Bumblebee when we are going mob handed - there's four of us and it's more of a family day out but some track will be acquired in the process. Lets see what UKR throw up for 2019 and whether I am free as well. The books of course seeing certain weekends blocked out.

Although of course I was on a tour a short while back - UKR's Hills of the North when I took the South Tynedale Railway option. Winning 90020 was the traction from Euston to Penrith before a bus took us to Alston where the South Tynedale turned out "BARBER" for the jog down to Slaggyford and back up the hill to Alston. The bus then took us back to Appleby (well I jumped on the other one of the pair simply to wag a different bus - a few other folk swapped buses as well). 67020 was another winner for the run via Hellifield back to Preston (required track all the way from Hellifield to Blackburn) where 90020 was on hand to take us back south. Appleby was a winning shack for me too so I was more than happy with the day's results as well as having a pleasant day out. The Settle and Carlisle is now 5-1 in my book - I have gone south five times but only north once and I have have for different classes of traction with the first run being a 40 (repeated on the 3rd run), then 47 which also powered my only northbound run followed by a 156 a few years ago and finally now a 67.

A good few hours at Gateshead Stadium or Felling is good to see what is out and about. Both are outside in the open and island platforms, and in general what heads southbound will return northbound. Just be thankful you have 3, I only need 4002 for when it comes out to play (and I suspect it will remain uncovered unless I get lucky in October time)

Hope you have a good trip on the trip to Grain & Dungeness, I guess you & company will be in the posh seats?

Luckily, 4002 was the first one that I ever way back in about 1987 had but as to whether I rode in that one or its partner, I will never know. I'm fully conversant with camping out at Gateshead Stadium or Felling

We've been to Dungeness loads of times, but always the other one with a far more frequent train service. It's one of our favourite places no matter what the weather is. It will make a change to go on the big railway - just hope that we are on the correct side to see Old Midley. Given that ladies make up 50% of the party, we will definitely be in the posh seats - after all, we can't have them slumming it with the general riff-raff!

I’ve only been on the S&C once each way Keith.
I made myself do a return trip from Nottingham in 1989 when it looked like it was about to be shut. 47635 one way and another 47 back from Carlisle. It was even sunny...
Would very much like to do it on a 40 one day though.

Had a chance to look up the 40s that I had over the S&C - first off was 40058 in October 1974 on the southbound Thames-Clyde Express after a Peak went pop on the G&SW then it was 40013 on 10 September 1983 on the 1635 ex Carlisle to Leeds

Oh nice!! 40122 was my solitary 40 over the S&C, Albeit twice both ways. 40013 was the only other 40 I had on the main line too. A Newcastle to York, when it appeared on the 14.20 trans Pennine Newcastle-Liverpool turn, one summer Saturday. With 40s being withdrawn at an alarming rate, it was rammed with cranks from the guards van to the rear coach.

Whilst I've done the S&C too many times to remember, I've still yet to do the Dawlish run, it's on the Railway bucket list though.

I can arrange a lovely 143 for your Dawlish run ;)

Raking through my old notes for the On This Day in History thread, I have found another S&C trip in The Haulage Book. And it's a northbound one too so that redresses the balance slight - it's now 5-2 in favour of southbound runs and I can add another class of loco as well, my beloved 50s!

UKR have already have thrown up one required tour for 2019 - their visit to the East Somerset Railway. They advertise a 59/2 as the main traction - one wonders what's in store for the visit to Merehead as my reckoning says that an assisting loco is needed. (In reality, it will probably be the loco that works the ECS into London)

Maybe it will be 2x 59/2s top & tailing, as my reckoning says the rear loco will work back to London

Hi everyone, I am back! Albeit briefly

You’ll all probably have noticed my absence from these parts of the world in recent months – to put it simply, other matters have got in the way which have prevented me having numerous trips out. A combination of issues such having a (growing) business to run, still keeping the full-time job ticking over so that in a few months the pension pays out and putting the house on the market have all contributed to bashing taking a back seat.

Up until last Friday, the limits of 2019 bashing have been an excursion with UK Railtours - the Somerset Strimmer – where I scored two locos 59206 and Kettle 46447 along with some required track. The primary objective here was to score the track around Merehead Quarry and the connection to the East Somerset Railway. The two winners were obviously welcome and no doubt the ESR welcomed my selective raid on their second hand books! Little did I know that within three weeks of this tour which passed through Clifton Down, would I be back there again, albeit on personal business.

So on Friday 5th April, I seized an opportunity to grad a host of winners as a result of having to head to Bristol (and more specifically Clifton Down) to conduct a couple of hours of personal business.

Back to last Friday and winning 802103 started out the day very nicely from Paddington to Reading - my previous IET trips had been confined to 800/0s and a solitary 800/3. Another winner, 800310, was right behind so that was wagged to Swindon and following up was 800315 which took me to Bristol Parkway. Thereafter, I was not aiming for much on the winning front until business was over, but I could not resist 166220 for a spin from Parkway to Temple Meads as that put it in the Ten Mile Club. 165118 then conveyed me to Stapleton Road with 166221 almost right behind for the final trip to Clifton Down.

With the business swiftly conducted, 166209 was my conveyance from Clifton Down back to Temple Meads where a quick shuffle from the station’s lowest numbered platform to its highest numbered platform saw me board 800316 for the run through to Swindon. A fifteen-minute wait in the North Wiltshire metropolis was plenty enough for me and scoring a new sub-class for me, I left on winning duo 802001+802003 for the trip to Didcot Parkway. The pairing of 800017+800020 gave me my first (and only) dud IET of the day on the run up to Reading. Single 800029 took me on to Slough where I switched my allegiance to the slow lines and 387136+387148 to bag my 9th winner of the day to Hayes & Harlington. 360203 was not far behind so while dud, another coach was scored on the short trip to Southall. Coach scoring led me onto 387157 for onward travel to Ealing Broadway where winner number 10 for the day fell into my lap – please welcome 345007 into The Haulage Book!

All too soon, I was back at Paddington and making my way home. While I racked up 10 winners, it made me think that I definitely need to get out on the rails again before too long. I know that opportunities in the next few weeks will be non-existent and thus it’ll be a few weeks before I’m out bashing again but I can't wait!
