Well as far as I can tell, it was superseded by deisel, and then electric.. not rocket science
Considering steam lasted until 1968, it's not correct to assume diesel then electric, they were pretty much the same times. You missed the opportunity to use your unintentional pun about 'rocket science' and it's connection to a famous steam loco.

Shouldn't there then be a " and then diesel" at the end, as no electric loco's have been built for more than 20 years- yet we have a plethora of 66's of various sources, then 67's and now 70's... fact not rocket science, and the last locomotive completed was ....... errr steam (Tornado) and the build of others started.

scrapped with indecent haste ......

some locos went to the scrap yards when they were 5 years old - even before they were due for their first overhaul.

then in 1973 came the oil crisis .......

Instead of messing with untried diesels they should have proceeded with more electrification.

Hear Hear pal! In West Germany Deutsche Bundesbahn concentrated on electrifying the main lines and a few secondary ones, and retaining some of their more modern steam locos, which avoided over-investment in diesels. In East Germany steam locos were in use until the mid 1980s.

For a nation which gave birth to the railways we royally screwed them up!

Quite apart from the 92s that were built in the 90s, the main reason no electric locos have been built since them is the decision to move from loco haulage to EMUs. Seems the last diesel locos built for passenger use were the 43s, based on the same principle as DMUs themselves.

You can usually find at least 4, if not more of his photos in Rail & other magazines.

To be fair why would the government, at the dawn of the Cold War, NOT mobilise every resource in its power to prepare for 'The Balloon going up'? You've got to understand how paranoid the government and public were about the unknown consequences of nuclear attack.

The splendid Snapper and I have done battle on a number of occasions before, however we don't fall out, and I respect his professionalism and the quality of his work.

If I approached even a quarter of his standards then I think I would be happy.

Oh I agree about his photo's; It's just he seems to have perfected the knack of rubbing people up the wrong way at times, to the point of you wanting to strangle him, yet other times he comes up trumps with expert advice....
