On that basis it would be better to ban all cars from coming anywhere near the terminals and provide a dedicated remote drop-off/pick-up area. You could then remove parking from the terminals making future remodelling easier too. Essentially have the public entrance to the airport for non-public transport users as a completely separate facility. Perhaps build a skyscraper sized multi-storey car park on top of Wythenshawe Bus Station. /sarcasm mode

Wythenshawe has an Interchange, not a bus station - but that's another story for another thread.

Have hated using Manchester Airport the last few years, especially landing there. Are they short of stairs for the aircraft or short of ground crew. Once you get off the aircraft is a nightmare as well.

I would suspect the latter. On another forum I did see an explanation, from a member of staff, as to why MAN handles far fewer diversions than in years gone by. Many enthusiasts assumed it was due to "surplus" stands at the extreme western end of the apron being used to park cars rather than aircraft but the explanation was that the handling agents, who actually employ most ramp staff, have been under such pressure to reduce their costs that staffing levels are typically maintained so as to be just enough during smooth operations leaving little slack to cope with the unexpected. As such airlines using remote stands must run the risk of stairs not being provided as quickly as they ought.

Thanks for the info. Just for the record I am not just knocking Manchester as a scouser. Ha ha. I have genuinely found it a nightmare to arrive in. Not really had a problem departing with security etc. Plus I love going there just to watch planes.

Your posting record is such that I would not dream of labelling you as a moaning Scouser, quite the opposite in fact. It's a pity that others on here who speak from or in support of the great city at the west end of the East Lancs Road seem less willing to lose the chips on their shoulders and be a bit more objective. Totally agree about the plane watching though these days I get plenty of action right above my home, including approaches to LPL!

Cheers mate. Speaking of which I have a rest day on Friday and am tempted to get a Manchester Airport service from South Parkway early doors to catch the morning Trans Atlantic departures. I can see them flying over mine but they are normally a little high. The weather is meant to be nice.

The rumour at the mill is that Norwegian is taking the A380 from HiFly for a period until late August to operate LGW - JFK. Some lucky passengers who bought a premium economy Norwegian ticket are about to find themselves in the lap of Singapore Airline's luxury for no additional charge.

Being hired in for a 3 week period so I am led to believe. Quite an upgrade for those who will be flying on it!

Please can someone tell me about the plane that is permanently parked near the start of runway 26L at Gatwick?

Does it have a purpose?

It looks like it could be a partially de-liveried ex-Monarch plane judging by the black and yellow stripes along the underside of the fuselage.

Thanks.

Normally when you see aircraft left lying around like that they are for fire service practice, though I don't know about that specific one.

So did anyone see the stolen Dash 8 that did a barrel roll in Seattle and crashed with only the thief on board?
Yes though it has shockingly quickly dropped out of the news cycle given the enormity of the security breach and the potential for catastrophic results.

I believe there's an ex-Monarch plane hanging round the back of Manchester for the same reason, though it's not the scorched one, so quite possibly to do with evac etc. Would imagine it's the same at Gatters.

That was my initial thought but at least from the outside it looks undamaged and in my totally non-expert view it would seem far too close to the runway for fire service training.

Whenever I have visited Manchester Airport Viewing Park, the aircraft have always taken off/landed from a left to right direction. Do they ever take off/land from the opposite direction?

Yes, when the wind is in the opposite direction (approximately).
