hey y'all
i recently noticed that the penalty fare has risen to £50 on london underground services (and on london busses) if you fail to show on demand a valid ticket or validated oyster blah blah blah.

ive also noticed that on our oyster validators in the national rail (not lul) section on the station have also got stickers on them, warning of a £50 penalty fare, however, i know our revenue protection staff are still doing £20 penalty fares.

Just wondered, does anyone know if the penalty fare on national rail services will also be rasing to £50?

Many thanks

oww, thats good if it is going up. a £50 penalty fare should discourage some fare evaders!
and its a shame that guards cant issue penalty fares, I had one guy on m train this evening with no ticket and no intention of buying one, his excuse; 'i dont need a ticket, its late evening, look how many empty seats there are'
I would have loved to have given him a £50 penalty fare, or £72 accually, because the FC single was £36

I think the TfL Penalty Fare is decided by TfL itself; whereas the Penalty Fare on National Rail would need to be agreed by all TOCs and the DfT. I've heard rumours that National Rail would move to a £50 Penalty Fare in the future...

Will it? Is there any evidence of that?

Why should that person be given a penalty fare?! An MG11 would be more appropriate!

If you can't get him to pay a normal fare, how are you going to get him to pay a penalty fare? :?

Far too many penalty fares seem to be given to people who quite obviously were out to defraud. Isn't that what court is for?

A criminal record might prove to be a bit more suitable as a punishment, although society today says a criminal record would be unfair - and that it might stop the offender getting a job, so let's just give them another chance...

A Penalty Fare is quicker and easier to issue than an MG11. Maybe Revenue Protection staff get commission on PFs like traffic wardens!

someone i know has been traveling without a ticket for years, hes had two, £20 penalty fares, so for him its worked out cheaper to pay the penalty fares and to still never buy a ticket. I spoke to him about if it were to go up to £50 and he said if it did, he would rather buy a £4 ticket, then risk a £50 penalty fare. So i think it would discourage some people.

as for that bloke last night, yes, an MG11 would have been more appropreate. I didnt think of that becuase i cant do those anyway.

with most people who wont buy a ticket, or dont have any money, i can usually whip out my unpaid fare notice book, get their details and do it that way, and thats practically the same as a penalty fare except your charging them a different price

In london and around the penalty fares are £50.00 but £25.00 if the fare is paid early, but I have heard people say before "dont get a ticket the penalty fares cheaper" which is true but I always pay as its disrespectful to the TOC.
