The Euro Cargo Rail 66s that operate(d) on the French rail network used to travel by rail between France And England when they were required back at Toton for servicing, does DBC still do so or is all maintenance work now undertaken in France?

Ah, so what I said that I heard about Cat engines could be correct then?

Progress Rail still manufacture/sell the medium-speed EMD-branded 2-stroke engines (and the new 1010 series 4-stroke engine) - and there is a Tier-4 compliant marine version of the EMD 710 engine (using SCR after-treatment) available, so I guess they could do a rail version of it if there was enough demand.

The problem with using most Cat (and MTU and Cummins) engines is that they are high-speed (1500 - 1800 rpm) engines, which wouldn't be directly compatible with the existing class 56 alternators. The Cat V20 C175 in the EMD US F125 passenger loco is mated with a third-party (non-EMD) alternator for that reason (that loco is a real mixture of suppliers - bodyshell and bogies from Stadler in Valencia, engine from Cat, alternator from Kato, traction inverters from Mitsubishi, motors and traction control from EMD...)

EMD buys it traction inverters from Mitsubishi (for about the last 15 years was Siemsens before that)
Kato has supplied CAT's rail 4 stroke engine alternators since before they bought EMD. (e.g. the Progress engine-ings)
EMD's new welded rather than cast bogies are also supplied by Stadler Valencia (the factory was a local EMD partner for 40+years before the last 2 owners and built the 67s).

The bodyshells for the 60s and the 92s were built around the same time at the same place in wakefield.

Yes thats as I recall, was the company named Procor? then on completion they were transported down to Brush at Loughborough for full fitting out.

Now denamed and debranded, DC Rail grey liveried 56312 returned to mainline service for new owners GB Railfreight today, working the 0Z56 Leicester LIP - Barrow Hill test run. 47749 went along for insurance and hauled it back to Leicester as 0Z57. Welcome back

Rail Magazine is reporting that the re-engined 56s are expected to be numbered as ‘69s’

Interesting. Someone could probably write a book about the whys and wherefores of locos that are re-engined and reclassified or otherwise. No with 37s and 43s, usually but not always with 47s, yes with 30s.....

Can't wait for the jokes about people needing 69s.....
