Here's one for the crayonistas.

The Taxpayers Alliance is running the above competition asking what other transport infrastructure projects you could fund if you didnt spend £50 billion on HS2.

The judging panel is

Craig Tracey MP
Lord Framlingham
Lord Berkeley
Michael Byng, infrastructure and procurement specialist
Phil Basey, Editorial Director - TaxPayers' Alliance
James Roberts, Political Director - TaxPayers' Alliance

Details can be found at https://www.taxpayersalliance.com/gbtc

Good chance to bombard them with ideas to reopen Carmathern to Aberystwyth etc

A bunch of people who are fairly noted for being anti HS2 I think!
Also guaranteed to get a lot of road schemes suggested!

Could suggest capacity & speed enhancements between, for example, London and Brum, then Brum to Manchester, Wigan and Liverpool, Brum to Leeds via Nottingham area and linking to York and beyond and also significant improvements on the Transpennine corridor from Liverpool to Hull & Newcastle. Maybe longer term can also suggest extra capacity and speed through the Glasgow & Edinburgh suburbs and better links from NE / NW towards Bristol & S Wales.

Funding the renationalisation of the TOCs and ROSCOs might not get a warm welcome from them ... :D

Fund SS1 - The start of a new Slow Speed network using former rural branch lines, which will be somewhere to run all the old trains that we like and don’t want to scrap.

4th and 5th runway at Heathrow, with an express rail link to the associated new terminal served by a dedicated fleet of re-engineered 442s, or whichever other middle-aged or life-expired train this forum believes should have £££ invested to keep them going.

Monorails everywhere. Like those in Brockway, Ogdenville and North Haverbrook.

I propose the HS2 budget is reallocated to a network of airships operating from city centre docking towers.

They will be expensive because they will solely provide executive business travel to all these far flung places we will deal with once we drop out of the EU. To further ingratiate the idea with backward looking outfits like Taxpayers alliance, might I suggest they are operated by a new air carrier established for that purpose called BOAC and the exterior design is based on R101?

This is an easy one to answer....

What projects would I use it for if HS2 were to be cancelled?

-Lots, probably too many to mention and discuss in a single thread.

What projects would this and future governments use it for if HS2 were to be cancelled?

-Probably very few. Given that the estimated cost is for the lifespan on the project, so the best part of two decades, as a yearly cost it is significantly less and given how reticent governments are to start long awaited projects most of the money would probably not even make it to NR's budget.

Airships - the only civilised way to travel to the Empire! (A decent number of Brexiteers still seem to think the UK has an Empire, so it'll appeal to them)

A tram-train running non-stop from Hornsey to Bury. That this would be extremely convenient for me and me alone is sheer coincidence.

This is of course the right answer... any resemblance to any other projects is purely coincidental.

Alternatively, use the HS2 budget to fund moving about 2 million people from London to underdeveloped regions of the UK, by compulsory movement of sufficient company head offices to achieve the required population shift.

Am I permitted to suggest a road scheme?

Upgrade (new build where necessary) the A46 between the M5 and M40 to at least "expressway" standard. Of course, this would in no way benefit me at all... And, my "Network Rail" cost estimate is £500 million, so...

Spend the rest of the money redoubling the rest of the Cotswold line, and electrify Bristol-Birmingham-Derby, the MML, and any other sensible electrification schemes.

On second thoughts, that might exceed the £56 billion budget!
