The stickers along the North Wales Coast are inconsistent, wonky and untidy. Some are at the top of signs with a chunk cut off to fit around the letters, others are at the bottom. On the up platform at Flint they’ve slapped a sticker over another sticker! So many stickers...

They’ve skimped on the proofreading too. That should be “Am Reilffordd…” (without the h, due to the preceding Am).

I wonder if the strip should have been right at the bottom, but the person applying it thought he’d save time and avoid dealing with the protruding fastenings...
Surely the actual sticker is just the Transport for Wales logo at bottom left of the white area, isn't it? The rest of the white sign, including "Am Rheilffordd ...", seems to be an earlier white steel plate that has been fixed (rather badly) over an even earlier dark blue sign. (Correction: Craigybagel has pointed out that it was a white and teal plate, so it was fixed using all the bolts, not as I thought: It looks as though someone fixing the CRP/PRyC white plate decided they could save a bit of drilling by fitting it too high and just using the top bolts.)

It would have helped if the TC/TfW sticker had been applied without creases and air bubbles though.

No, the white is all a sticker. I assume it's been placed above the bolts to avoid them getting in the way but it still looks stupid and cheap. Just stick a bit of *correctly coloured* tape (colour match it properly) or a bit of paint over the Arriva logo and leave the colour as it is until the money is there for a proper replacement.

They should use a new font anyway, the BR font is looking very dated now.

The sticker is a long thin strip across the whole bottom of the sign. At most stations, where under arriva the signs were white with an Arriva Teal coloured stripe at the bottom, the sticker just covers over the stripe - admittedly though it works better at some stations then others.

The top part of the white area is definitely an old(er) steel plate, as it projects above the blue sign beneath it, so the mis-spelling pre-dates the TfW sticker.

I think that is Transport Bold, as used on road signs as well since the 1960s Warboys Report, rather than a BR typeface.

Thanks for the clarification, it looks as though there was an original blue sign, then a white and blue plate bolted over it with the CRP/PRyC logo and station name above and ATW logo below, then a TC/TfW sticker which (almost but not quite) covers the ATW area. Hopefully the resulting mish-mash will eventually be replaced properly.

Arriva just put stickers over the regional rail signs for years. Maybe they'll do proper repaints and signs for the stations in good time. It's not the biggest problem in the world that a few stickers look a bit wonky, is it?! I wonder what they'll do with Chester station? Should really be a Network Rail station given the different operators there, but putting Welsh stickers all 9ver it may be quite controversial with the locals, given the deep rivalry with Wrexham locally.

The cascades will hopefully be eliminated in the next franchise post 2033.

What cascades? The only cascaded trains that are staying long term are the 170s and Mark 4's.
You're posts don't always make sense.

Assuming you mean getting rid of the 170s after the 2018-2033 franchise, yes: they'll be roughly 30 years old by then.

However, that's a long time in the future, and a lot of things could change before then. HS2 should be open, there may be further electrification of the SWML or the NWCL, etc. If additional bi-mode or electric stock is bought in the future, the Civity DMUs could be cascaded to Carmarthen to replace the 170s, for example.

The Mark IV coaching stock will also be long in the tooth by 2033, and at that point they may be replaced with a MU with first class and kitchen, for example. But we've got a brand new franchise to go before we get to that point...

"...gwasanaeth i Abertawe..."

Sorry, I should have mentioned I was referring to the voices! I've now had an email reply from TfW which I'll read later.

Has anyone heard the new station announcement by Eryl Jones aka 'Glyn' (doing both the Welsh and, for the first time, the English as 'Ruth' / Ruth Mitchell has stopped doing new recordings) that goes something like:

Arriva Trains Wales is proud to have served the area, and we would like to thank our passengers/customers for their loyalty, (blah blah da-da-da) and patience for the last 15 years. Diolch yn Fawr.

(The "Diolch yn Fawr" is in the English part of the announcement - the full Welsh version precedes it). I heard it at Carmarthen station today (I was told it has was installed two days ago) and was rather surprised!

Was on a 158 to Birmingham on Monday. Sure it was on board? Or it could have been at Llandudno Junction actually waiting...

My apologies, probably was actually thinking back.

Back to stickers. I’m at Wrexham Central and the stickers have been applied to the bottom of the platform signs.

They’ve been placed on top of the Arriva turquoise blue which itself is a sticker. You’d have thought it would’ve been easier to have removed the previous sticker rather than place a sticker on top of a sticker.

I guess it’s asking too much to clean the sign while they’re there as well.....

Sorry if i'm being stupid, but aren't the 4 coach Stadler Flirts much shorter than 2 x Class 150? Considering that 2x150 is already pretty packed on a peak time Rhymney valley service (been there, done that), isn't a 4 coach Flirt going to cause even more issues? I understand that TFW are upping the service frequency to 6tph to Caerphilly (instead of the current 4tph), but is that going to help overcrowding due to shorter trains? Again, sorry if i'm being stupid.

According to the TFW presentation, the Stadlers will be 80m long - equivalent to a 4 car 150.

Oh, so i was being stupid, oops.

Does that 80m include the power module thingy too?

Presumably yes. However, that should get cancelled out by the space currently occupied by the two unused driving cabs in the middle of a 2 X 150 set.

Chester station. This doesn’t feel quite right. Could you imagine the furore if ‘Transport for England’ branding appeared at Newport, for example.

I don't think it can have been installed as recently as two/three days ago as I heard the message (or a very similar one) in Carmarthen myself, and the last time I was there was lunch time on Saturday (8th September).

Presumably yes. However, that should get cancelled out by the space currently occupied by the two unused driving cabs in the middle of a 2 X 150 set.
And fewer doors (8 per side on a 4-car 150, 6 per side on a 4-car Cardiff Metro FLIRT). There's also the 3-car FLIRTs though which might suffer more from the engine module (presumably the 3-car FLIRTs will run in pairs to make use of the 124m platforms on Rhymney-Penarth, although does that mean some services won't call at Gilfach Fargoed*)?

* I'm guessing if pairs of Pacers are used currently the rear door of one unit and the front door of the other are platformed, but I've never been there to see for myself?

If "Caer" turns up in green font, the revolution has begun!

I believe it's just one door on one unit that opens - trying to do more then that gets rather complicated (most ATW units are only set up to allow 1 door or all doors, nothing in between). Nothing has been made clear yet as to how the doors on the new units will work anyway (who will open them, who will close them, will they have SDO and so on).

I suspect at least some of the 3 cars will operate singly on the Coryton line - but again I'm sure it will all make sense in time.

Incidentally, of the 8 departures southbound from Caerphilly between 0700 and 0900 today, only 1 (0825) was 2 X 150. Of the rest (in descending order of capacity) 2 were 14x + 150, 2 were 2 X 14x, 1 was a single 150, and 2 were a single 14x. This suggests that once combined with the increase to 6tph South of Caerphilly, the new timetable should have plenty of capacity.

For the majority of the last 15 years, signage and branding at Chester has displayed the “Wales” in Arriva Trains Wales anyway, so don’t really see what the difference is to be honest. I’m sure the people of Chester and surrounding areas are intelligent enough to know they’re not in Wales. You could argue the same about Merseyrail. Chester isn’t part of Merseyside, so is that wrong too? Branding is branding. At the end of the day, people just want a reasonably priced, reliable railway service.

I'm in Wales tomorrow so I'll listen out for that. Is it confirmed that Ruth is no longer recording? I have read before that Eryl is based in Cardiff, and there is a high chance that Ruth still lives in the far South West, so it would have been more convenient to get Eryl into the studio at Cardiff than Ruth. I'm surprised they even went to that length to be honest, and didn't just get the lady who does the 'See it, Say it, Sorted"/Buy Before You Board/Sloping platform announcements to do it.

Quite a nice touch regardless, I'm sure a lot of other operators wouldn't bother. Or maybe it will just give ATW commuters horrific flashbacks of the last 15 years
