Quieter, and you have to run 3-cars minimum.

The earlier and later departures are welcome, definitely needed earlier trains into the Central.
Yeah pretty sure you can get in earlier from Ayr ! I wonder how many seats is 3 car 314 vs a 2 car 156

Anyone have any idea on when the withdrawal of the 314s will take place now that the 385s are finally entering service? I’ve had to use them as my local rolling stock all my life and I have to confess I’ll miss them when they’re gone.

I think it will be a good few months yet. The 380s will probably come back from the E&G and replace some of them on the Gourock line. But the rest will have to wait until drivers have been trained on 385s.

i wonder if the 365s might be an option to replace 314s. They are on a one year lease which would give time to build up the 385 stock on other routes and allow the 314s to go as planned. I know a couple of six car sets run in the peaks but if the rest were four car the loadings could even out (or cover them with 320s) as I don’t think the platforms could accommodate eight car. Paisley Canal and Inverclyde would revert to 380.

As a Newton branch user I would be delighted with 365s on my line. I know ScotRail are intending to have 4 carriage trains on Neilston services soon in the form of 380s but I wonder if it will be the 365s now that they’re avaliable until May.

The Newton line gets a better mixture than the Neilston which sees mostly 314s

Correct. The Newton via Queens Park service is almost always a 320/318 on weekdays. This becomes a problem when the 3 car unit that does this diagram carries out the 1711 Glasgow Central - Newton service which must be one of the most overcrowded services running out of Central at peak times and would benefit a lot from even a 4 car unit. The 1726 Central - Neilston service is also always busy, but at least it runs as a 6 car.

The original plan to replace 314s with 385s creates one huge problem - without platform extensions or extensive selective door operation, trains longer than 4 carriages will not be able to run any services. Neilston services at peak times in particular will be badly affected by this, so I wonder if any platform extension work will begin soon or if the original plan to introduce 385s to the Cathcart Circle has changed.

They will operate as 6 cars at peak times using ASDO (auto selective door opening) as required.

Thanks for the insight. There are very few stations on the Circle that can fit a full 6 car 380/385 so ASDO will likely be a very common feature on the line.

This weekend sees the first class 314 diagrams withdrawn. Whilst it won't mean the immediate withdrawal of any particular unit it reduces the requirement for the class, paving the way for units to start leaving the fleet.

I thought the current plan was 3 off-lease December 2018, followed by 13 early next year.

Scot-rail gen site reports 3 class 314 units will be stood down from service tonight, apparently because the Ayr blockade had freed up some units. Not entirely sure how true this is.

Scot-Rail may be thinking that loss of diagram = loss of units. And then make up a conclusion that it's the Ayr thingy to blame.

I wonder which units will be withdrawn first. A few months ago I remember there were teams of surveyors on a few 314 services who were presumably evaluating which units were more reliable and which ones will be going to the scrapyard first. Over the years I’ve been able to pick favourite units (weird, I know), so I’m hoping 202 survives as long as possible.

Not weird at all. I still miss 302207, 309623, 312702 and will miss 360104. Part regular familiar units, part nice experiences or first trips on class. Perfectly normal sir.

Confirmed by Scotrail on Twitter.

We've retired the first three Class 314 trains! From Monday, even more Inverclyde services will be operated by our Class 380 fleet, which have sockets, WiFi and toilets on board. We'll introduce more of these over the next few months.

Can't say I'll be sorry to see them go. Beyond basic but I suppose they've given reliable service over the years.

For me the two 314 units that stand out are 202 because it was the last train to carry the Strathclyde Orange and Black livery (not counting 303032 at Bo'ness), and 211 because I had a memorable and rare experience of travelling to Ardrossan on it in January 2007.

Indeed, however the ScotRail Twitter says they've "Just retired" them. Either way, currently heading through to Glasgow to find out myself. The end is nigh!

Like Ash on my thread, still need 207 (Also need 206, but that's not being talked about right now)
There’s 3 class 314 units coupled together outside Shields Road just now, couldn’t see numbers but guessing it’s those three. A bit odd because all the usual Inverclyde 314 diagrams seem to have run as usual today.

Noticed a 380 on a Neilston service earlier so that could be one of the diagrams they’ve been replaced on.
