Talent Pool, I thought it was straight in as trainee, no mention in the advert for talent pool.

The adverts close when they have enough candidates....usually a matter of a few days. This thread was posted Tuesday last week.

Closing dates mean nothing with these postings. They have the right to withdraw early and they tend to use this right, due to the volume of applications.

I applied also and it said “we are currently looking for future train drivers to join our talent pool” :) but hey, better than nothing! So, good luck everyone, hope they don’t take forever to back to us haha!

Thanks, and good luck with your application. The reasons for applying seemed to flow quite well when I was writing it, but on reading it back in the cold light of day it comes across a bit rambling, and I also picked up a few grammatical errors :s I have learned from this and have saved a word document with coherent responses to these questions, so I can just copy and paste if I need to apply again in the future.

The recruitment team must get so fed up of reading about how passionate we all are!

One thing that I'm keen to see is how the recruitment portal works when the ATW franchise changes in October, it's all Arriva branded at the moment, surely Arriva have no interest in keeping that recruitment site running when they no longer run the franchise.

Yeah that’s what I did, wrote it in my notes before copy and pasting it just incase I clicked submit by accident haha! Yes I agree....but they know what keywords they are looking for, we just have to cross our fingers :D and yeah that’ll be fun and games. A new careers recruitment website will probably open after this intake maybe?! :s I just keeping looking at my emails awaiting a response even though it’ll probably be a while yet! Which depot have you applied for? :)

I've applied for Cardiff, hoping there will be lots of opportunities around here with the South Wales Metro plans

I have also applied for the Trainee Train Driver at Cardiff.

If the increase in TPH on various lines that has been mentioned comes into effect and with the metro plans in and around Cardiff we should have plenty of opportunities.

Good luck to all that apply.

It may be quicker than you think with the wales and borders franchise. The training school have been told they’ll be very, very busy from now on. Brilliant news for everyone here. If you fail/failed this time, keep at it and improve where you can. Good luck.

Hi all, my first post so go easy on me:s
I've applied for the cardiff depot, I was just wondering what all your thoughts are on my chances? just in one field, as I've been a HGV driver for 14 years, and looking at the criteria for the job there's a lot of similarities.
Thanks all
Gidion.

Welcome to the forum.

Obviously you’ve only give a tiny bit of information about yourself so impossible to say what your chances are. But I know of many ex HGV/coach drivers that are currently working for Arriva. I myself was too. There’s plenty of similarities and I think HGV drivers make the best train drivers.... but I would wouldn’t I. Haha.

Seriously though, there’s a lot that needs to go on the application and HGV experience will cover a good, but small percentage of what they’re looking for. This is why it doesn’t matter what your background is, anyone can apply and have just as good a chance as the next person.

That being said, they do look for certain qualities in terms of experience. Safety critical roles are a good start. I had my ADR licence and worked with dangerous chemicals/fuel so this helped in my application. No worries if you haven’t though, there’s plenty of ways to demonstrate you’re always thinking about safety.

There are other qualities they want too but I’m not going into everything. Haha. Good luck.

Heya :) don’t be nervous...we don’t bite! I suppose they just want people who carry as many as the non technical skills as possible (e.g. time keeping, consciousness, attention to detail, self motivated, effective decision making etc)! Anyone from any background can have these qualities but a job like yours always helps due to the experiences you may have came across in your time as a HGV driver! As long as you’ve put across all your best qualities I’m sure you’ll smash it :) Positive thoughts only!!

Good luck :)

Has the paydeal been agreed?

I heard something like 3.4% was offered.

A bit low that.

Also, any news on what happens in Cardiff? I.e. train drivers tuped into tram drivers?

Thanks guys, I’ve got my fingers crossed, I’m also a rugby union referee so maybe that could come in useful? As dealing with safety first and making split second decisions in pressure situations.
