Now there are four class 80x threads I have no idea which one to place this question in! It's not geographically specific. I'll compromise by posting it in two of them.

On page 83 of the October Modern Railways therE's a photograph of the driver's control panel.

Item 9 is "snow brake pushbutton". What do the brakes do differently in snow?

Item 20 is "Wheel slip/slide warning and train wash pushbuttons". What is/are the train wash pushbutton(s)? Presumably not actually a device to wash the train. I suppose it could be something to close apertures when going through a train wash?

Train wash mode enables a unit to go through the train wash at a set speed without the driver having to worry about maintaining the very low speeds themselves (think cruise control on a car). Our carriage wash is 3MPH, I think the 387s are fitted with train wash mode as well.

Im just guessing on the train wash side of things but thats probably to regulate it at 3kmh or whatever it needs to be when going through the wash - a sort of slow cruise control id imagine.

Snowbrakemode applies a slight bit of friction brake whilst powering or coasting if enabled and temperature is below 4 degrees. Replaces the need for regular running brake tests in falling snow

I would assume this would do light brake applications regularly to clear the pads and discs of snow. It also may change the WSP characteristics.

Again a guess, but it could be there to hold the train at the correct speed to go through the wash?

Perhaps the train wash mode also tells the computers not to be frightened of all the water ! "don't worry, It is fresh water, not like that nasty salty water found at Dawlish. Don't be frightened and trip everything, it is for your own good, and anyway it is not for long"

It activates the window goggles and water wings.
