Hi, read recently about the GW HST's being refurbished for scotrail, so i see they have a new lease of life, is this true for all the LNER ones too? Will they go on to other lines?

If not, is anyone going to preserve one? if one isnt already preserved somewhere? I would guess so?!?

GWR formerly operated 53 HST sets. 26 of these, using around half the carriages from these sets (TRFBs, TGS vehicles and some Trailer Standards are being discarded), are being refurbished for use by Scotrail, and 11 short 4-car sets are being refurbished for further use by GWR South West of Bristol.

The remaining 16 GWR HST sets and the 15 LNER sets are going off lease with no future use confirmed at present.

The HST prototype 41001 is already preserved and in passenger service at the GCR(N) (Great Central Railway Nottingham). I've ridden behind it fairly recently (a pleasant surprise, didn't check before visiting and was just expecting a random diesel loco).

It would be good if the prototype HST could be recreated in its entirety. Is a "nose job" on a production vehicle a possibility to make up for the scrapped prototype power car?

The cabs are removable fibreglass modules so it would probably be fairly straightforward to modify a production power car to produce a reasonable facsimile of 41002/43001. There'll be plenty available soon enough.

excellent thanks for the links all! Looks like there'll be a lot of kit available on the scrap market soon then!

.....and we are still using them on the MML!o_O......I suppose it will be ironic if there is a preserved "heritage" HST going over the MML on the Great Central (finished Gap) when there is an "in service" EMT (or whoever) HST still zooming through Loughborough on the MML!

I think it will take quite a lot of getting use to the idea of diesel galas featuring a Hst and Mk3 coaches but it will inevitably happen however they are quite complex machines and it would not be easy for a group of novices to keep one running so perhaps better in the hands of the 125 group only

As Iconic as they are I don't think a mad scramble of differing groups and personnel grabbing as many as can be bought would be good for the future of the HST

It won't quite be zooming over the MML just yet, but EMT are sending one of their newly refurbished former Grand Central 2 + 6 car HST sets from Derby along the MML, unerneath the new GCR bridge at L'borough and then reversing to take the steeply graded chord up and onto the GCRN, just a couple of hundred yards from the new bridge. On board will be the HST's much lauded designer Sir Kenneth Grange and will be heading its way to Ruddington, via Rushcliffe Halt, East Leake.

The prototype power car 41001 will replace one of the EMT power cars at Ruddington and take a trip to Loughborough Viaduct and back including some of the GCRN rare lines, including the rarely used loop by Hotchley Hill Signal Box - British Gypsum Works, which as far as can be recalled has never been used for passenger stock and up into the unused bay platform at Rushcliffe Halt.

'The Screaming Valentas' railtour date is Saturday 17th November 2018, and is being marketed by the Branch Line Society, with some tickets still available at £41.01!

Jeremy Hosking’s Locomotive Services Ltd are also considering buying one if I remember rightly.

Still sort of preserved though... it’s not going for scrap!

there is no guarantee of what might happen if it suffered a major failure or accident would they have the resources to repair it or might cashing it in at scrap value be the only realistic option

Difficult to know when it comes to non-steam traction what actually constitutes ‘preserved’ these days?
There’s been plenty of examples of diesel locomotives being preserved but later either ending up earning a living back on the network, or being scrapped because something better has come along that required less work to get running again.
