Could someone post or link to the current allocations on the direct and via Basingstoke services.

It’s been awhile since I’ve done any travelling to town but was surprised to catch a 450 on the 1127 from Fareham last Wednesday.

I’ve got some travel coming up mostly at weekends and want to avoid the 450s if possible. Or put it this way if I’m going to pay SWT prices and the 1st class weekend supplement for the extra space we’d like to be on a 444; otherwise we might as well take the long route on Southern.

Very many thanks.

Since no-one has come along with any facts, I'll just offer an opinion - as an occasion user of, and resident near, the Direct, my impression is that weekend services on that are pretty much all 450s. However when travelling I'm normally catching the stoppers, so I only tend to see the semi-fasts when I happen to be in sight of the line. A few times a year I catch southbound semi-fasts from Haslemere to Portsmouth at the weekend, and I can't remember anything other than 450s on those.

No doubt now someone will produce real allocations to prove me wrong :)

Via Fareham on weekends should be all 444s. Usually the majority of Portsmouth direct weekends are 12s with the occasional 10 in the circuit as well.

The last info I have access to is the Dec 17 CWNs, and they did show a couple of 8.450s on the via Fareham/Eastleigh on Saturday afternoons, 1359 and 1459 from the Harbour. (Also the down trains that form them.) But I don’t know the current setup, those times may have changed or be all 444 now. But any weekend when there’s engineering work all bets are off anyway.

The same CWN also had a few 450 operated services via Fareham/Eastleigh late Sunday afternoon and evening, after the joining with the Poole trains at Eastleigh finishes around 1600. Again, not the latest info so may be different now.

Many thanks I'll probably go via Fareham as originally planned.

My wife being registered disabled much prefers the extra space of the 2+1 setup and relative quiet of the end carriage, compared with the 2+2 in the middle on the 450s.

AFAIK, the December 2017 CWNs are accurate for the route via Fareham. The May 2018 timetable change did introduce some more strengthening of service on the route via Guildford on Saturday though, with more 12-car trains and the odd 10-444 working all day.

It is not that much longer on a Southern service and only 20 or 30 minutes more. In fact if you are now travelling the route via Fareham then you will save no time at all by opting for SWR. Most Southern trains have back to back table seats so there is your extra space sorted. SWR prices are simply not worth it in my opinion even though their 1st class seats are very nice.

Cost and worth are two very different things. The price per minute to sit in a larger than standard seat with table space to accomodate all body types on a TOC's service that takes 30 minutes less to reach near enough the same place, is very high. It is even higher if the journey length is exactly the same.

Make the most of the current 444 first class whilst you can - it won't be like that for much longer - and the prices aren't likely to come down to compensate.
