Hi all,

I apologize if this is the wrong place to ask this, but I would be interested to know if anyone has any details on the regularity of services to/from Aylesbury comprising of class 168s.

I take the train every morning and the 165s just don't compare in terms of facilities or comfort

If anyone has a timetable or similar of when 168s depart Aylesbury, that'd be excellent.

Apologies for bumping this thread, but the 'leaf-fall timetable' has been introduced and seemingly thrown the list kindly provided above all out of whack!

Does anyone know what the updated list would be? Better yet, can someone explain to me how to find this out without asking here! :)

The leaf-fall timetable does not affect any of these except for the fact that they leave AYS 3/4 minutes earlier. Below is a summary of the leaf-fall timetable:

Chiltern Railways
Chiltern Railways are authorised, at all times, to operate Class 165/0, 168/1, 168/2
and 168/3 DMU stock (class 172 stock may also run providing not front unit of a
train). From Sunday 7 October until Saturday 8 December the minimum train length permitted for trains running from start of traffic until 07:30 in the morning is three cars, after that time two-car trains may operate. These trains are fitted with Track Circuit Assisters (TCA’s) which must be working on the front and rear cars between Saturday 1 September and Monday 31 December inclusive each year.

Don't want to be a pedant, but Track Circuit Actuator is the real name for a TCA, don't know where they got their new name from. :P

Ah fantastic, thanks for that. I thought they had switched up the entire thing!

Out of interest though, what source do you use to get the full list you previously provided? I admit, I like trains but I am nothing more than an enthusiastic commuter. A lot of the lingo and tools are beyond me

Do Chiltern's 172s have hydraulic transmission instead of the standard mechanical gearbox? If not, doesn't running them with another unit that does cause issues?

And why can't they go on the front? No TCA?

Chiltern 172's have the mechanical transmission. They are fully compatible and can work with the rest of the Chiltern DMU fleet. There are a few minor issues when coupled with a different type of unit but it doesn't affect day to day operation

I believe this is mostly true, however Im pretty sure I boarded the 2C30 0945 AYS-MYB and it was a 3 car 165. Might've been a Saturday though, can't remember.

Do 168/3s and 172s have to be fully boxed in to operate on the Met? Or is 165+172 a legal formation?

Only the front unit requires a tripcock, so it would be possible to run 165+172 over the Met, however it couldn't return as 172+165, so would either need to be stabled at Aylesbury, or return via Princes Risborough.

The 172 cannot operate as lead vehicle in the formation, the 168/3 MUST have the anti rollback system functional as well to be on the Met line. We do not send 172s over the Met and try to keep them on workings that take them via High Wycombe. I do know of 1 occasion that a 172 has been over the Met but the formation was 168+172+165...

That makes sense with the 172s.

Do the 168/3s have tripcocks? I didn't think they did but this suggests they do?

168/3s are tripcock fitted. They also have an anti rollback system as well. This feature is part of the ATP system we use, so before the 168/3s were allowed on the Met they had to be fitted with a system that prevented rollback.

Ah right ok. Is it ATP they’re not fitted with or was that just when they were “new”

168/3s are not ATP fitted so before they traveled on the Met they had to have a system that prevents the train rolling backwards if the brakes are released. This system was developed by GOBOTIX and is fitted to all of our 168/3s...
