With time nearly up for our 142 Pacers I think it would be a good idea to have a sighting thread where people post regular of their sightings to help those looking for any.

142064/142067 are currently on-loan to Heaton at the moment.

I need 142011, 142046, 142062 & 142088. Probably would've scored them ages ago if Northern ran on Saturdays..

Where HSTs Still Scream. Kind of.
Do they still run the Hope Valley? For all their flaws, a part of me is always going to remember riding them to Edale or Hathersage stations in the snow, rubbing the mist from the windows and drying my gloves on the (surprisingly effective) floor heaters, all while marvelling at the wooden escape ladder proudly displayed by the gangway as a supposed reassurance should we have to evacuate into the icy abyss. The musty smell of the bus-style seats, something that is simply no longer replicated but evocative of days past for many of us. Waiting to get off and feeling the bitter wind sneaking through the patches in the rubber of the doors.

They're rubbish, but as somebody who doesn't have to ride them every day, I'm kind of going to miss them. They have a place in my heart for taking me on those aesthetically-pleasing adventures out of Sheffield in my Uni days, which were only three or four years ago but in historical terms were picked straight out of the mid-1980s. I'd quite like to get up this winter and have one more go, even if that comes with the ulterior motive of a fry-up at Grindleford station café.

Not on loan. Been allocated to HT for a few years now. Both on Saltburns today.

142036 just departed Manchester Victoria absolutely covered in graffiti.

It's been a long time since I've seen graffiti on a Northern train, presumably the desperate shortage of units means they have to use it rather than pull it out for cleaning.

They are loans according to the AB Rail Website, usually based at NH.

142067 has been a regular sighting in the NE for many years and I think 142064 has also although since the timetable change, there has been a drop off in the amount of pacers and more of them seem to be ending up in the North West although Heaton is probably still be their own depot.

I still need 142019 and 142090 for haulage if anyone has seen them recently.
142019 has been running on the Durham Coast Line recently. Photo taken at Hartlepool on 26th October at 06:50 am. Similarly 142090, this photo taken on 13th November at 15:53 at Hart.

142011 is running around Wigan/Blackburn.

With a decent set of flats as well so might be going for a few days off.

Yes, they're still running on the Hope Valley line, although they may only cover half the services. 150s are appearing more frequently now. 142s can be seen in a siding alongside Manchester Piccadilly

Thanks! That would explain why I haven't seen them in the Manchester area.

Could be a long thread this...
Yes, given that they're all still in service, so the general rule still applies that, if it's a Newton Heath based unit go to Manchester and you'll probably see it, and if it's a Heaton based unit, pick one of Sheffield or Newcastle and you'll probably see it.

It's less likely that you'll see either of those two around Manchester as they're Heaton based units

Stock exchanges may involve use of the Hope Valley route. At present several evening trips can be formed by a pair of 142s or a 142 and 150.

I'm still chasing plenty of these for sight. Is there any definitive information regarding their withdrawal or is it just best guesstimates at the moment?

Given that the first 5 units were due to go off lease in mid-October, with a further 19 to follow at the December timetable change, we can at least safely say that the planned withdrawal programme is behind schedule, especially considering that the 144s were due to start going off lease first, and they're all still in service.

I've no idea what the revised withdrawal schedule might be, but for those truly concerned about such things, I think you need only start worrying once the 144s begin to go off lease.

Here's a pair of unidentified 142s in Ardwick Depot last night. They're there for use of the Lathe.

Plenty of 142s operating in the Leeds area at the moment. In fact for this morning's commute from Selby I chose to get on one of the 142 units out of a 142+142+153 train because the heaters are better on a 142, and the seats usually have slightly more leg room that a 153.

If only Northern could do the £10 unlimited pass again I could get down to Leeds for these.

Can only dream of a pair of anything at the moment! 2 carriage hell. This route is crawling with Pacers.
