07:05 Manchester - Bristol severely delayed (03/12)

Hello everyone. I'm not sure if there's a thread but you maybe aware of probably the biggest ever delay to a CrossCountry service today - the 07:05 from Manchester Piccadilly to Bristol Temple Meads, after leaving Cheltenham Spa on it's 09:26 departure, terminated at Gloucester at a rather insane 16:00!

I know of the incident but a nearly 7 hour delay in a Voyager really isn't on.

I'm autistic and so if someone could explain to me how such a delay can occur in broad daylight then that'd be great. I hope I never have this happen!

I understand the situation with the deer + (At the time you said) the points failure.

It does raise the question though why it took that long to resolve. One thing I know is that for the toilets to work on Voyagers the engine has to be on.

Passengers were also stuck without food, drink, heating and water all that time.

Making sure the deer was removed and checking fitness to continue would take a while and may require someone to travel to the location.

Drinks I expect will have been provided. I have been stuck on an XC service in excess of 80 minutes once and they provided complimentary drinks. Staff were excellent and then received the fare in full back plus a free trip. With the amount of fuel the Voyagers can carry suspect engines would have remained on maybe?

Of course a near 7hr delay isn't on & im sure XC or any TOC would be the first to agree but circumstances vary by each incident of this nature. If the train is in an inaccessible location &/or totally disabled whether it be through damaged pipes or something else there isn't much else that can be done. I was recently involved in a collision with a car on a level crossing. It was almost four hours before evacuation started, this took nearly two hours, & ended up with another 40mins standing in a country lane awaiting road transport for us that where last off. It's one of those things I'm afraid.

RTT suggests some following trains were trapped behind the problem train (1V45), but later trains appear to have diverted via Severn Tunnel Jn or Swindon.
Others seem to have just "disappeared" en route!
On top of that there is now disruption at the other end of XC's network at York, with a station power cut.

Sorry regarding my opinion of the heavy delay.

It's just incredibly rare of this that's all.

The very fortunate thing was no passengers or staff were injured or worse!

Some big delays as well such as 1V46 (0645 Leeds to Plymouth) terminating 193L at Newton Abbot after around a 80 minute wait behind 1V45.

The "disappearing" trains are most likely ones which terminated at Gloucester and restarted a northbound service from there.

Sometimes log writers display a supreme sort of "humour" ....

"Pugilist removed at Purley by Police" ....(delays to xxx services accordingly)

I have an old (& non-wildlife related) one from BR days concerning a signalling failure at the then very new-fangled Leamington Spa Solid State Interlocking, with the reason given:
"STAND BY GENIE FAILED TO COME IN", apparently confirming that SSI did actually rely on magic.

I once saw an SWR train that became trapped in the New Forest become approx. 1100L!

Now that was funny to see, yet extremely frustrating for the pax, I’d imagine.

I'm not sure which way it went in the end, but 1V46 re-emerged on RTT at Filton Junction with no report at Bristol Parkway, so I would guess probably via Severn Tunnel.

I was travelling on 1V49 (Manchester - Bristol) from Cheltenham Spa, which terminated short at Gloucester and after changing onto 1O98 (Great Malvern - Brighton) heading south, I passed a XC heading north which was likely 1V46 looking back at it now!

I know for a fact that 1V48 (Newcastle - Plymouth) travelled via Swindon as we were following behind it on 1O98.

Thoughts go out to those on the train involved in the incident, an extremely long delay indeed!

It was more than one deer that was struck as a herd was on the track. The incident led to serious damage on 4 out of the 5 engines. And led to the train being a total failure.

Did it hit the herd at a high speed then? Seems serious that 4 out of 5 engines were affected...
