Fair enough, didn't know the DMUs were being withdrawn. Very glad I did them when I was over there.

It might be worth mentioning, in case some people reading this get the wrong idea, that there will still be quite a few diesel units running in the Netherlands, just not by NS.

Those DMUs are the Stadler GTW units, not the DM'90 DMUs, which will be withdrawn from service completely from December 10 onwards. So when you still want to catch one of those, you'll have to hurry ;)

Diesel in the Netherlands is:
Groningen - Leeuwarden/Veendam/Weener (Germany)/Delfzijl/Roodeschool
Leeuwarden - Harlingen Haven/Stavoren/Groningen
Almelo - Hardenberg
Zutphen - Oldenzaal/Apeldoorn/Winterswijk
Arnhem - Tiel/Winterswijk
Nijmegen - Roermond

Syntus is Zutphen - Oldenzaal; the rest is Arriva.

As said before Zwolle '- Kampen and Zwolle - Enschede becomes electric in December.

Actually, Syntus doesn't exist anymore. It has been Keolis for more than a month now. All Syntus trains are currently being rebranded with the new name.

The Maaslijn (Nijmegen - Roermond) will be electrified during the current concession.

What's the plan when the smaller franchises like Keolis and Arriva expire, will they be rolled back into NS again?

The responsibility for rail services in those areas has been devolved to the local governments (provinces) who will put them out to tender. NS can participate, but there's no guarantee that they'll win.

While the Netherlands does have some political parties that want to renationalise all rail services, they didn't get a significant amount of votes during the last election so their impact will be rather limited. The unions also seem to be keen on renationalisation, but the general public doesn't seem to care much about it.

But I travelled on this beauty between Rotterdam and Brussells earlier this year ! (admittedly the seats were partially leather, come to think of it).

Ahh.. The legendary I6 Voitures Eurofima! My very favourite!!
Hopefully I will enjoy one of those compartments on IC 2107 down to Luxembourg in the morning, if only it still ran as Le Vauban all the way to Bâle.. Now its a TGV to Strasbourg for a Sybic et Corail TER...

Are the I6 en I10 rijtuigen still being used on the BeNeLux???

No, they aren't. The IC Brussels (Benelux) is fully back to ICRm for almost two weeks now, like the Intercity Direct services, in top-and-tail. We call it a 'sandwich', as both locomotives are 'on' and providing power with coaches inbetween them.

Edit: and yes, that is a small, tiny bit overpowered, with two of those Traxx locomotives pulling/pushing 6 ICRmh coaches.

That is indeed just e WEE bit of an overpowered train!! o_O

That's a pity I've missed the boat on that as well.. Quite fancied riding in a I6 compartment all the way to Amsterdam soon...
It would seem the only scheduled work those cars have now is one out and back run from Brussel Zuid to Luxembourg Sunday-Friday, going by the Benelux Trains diagrams website.
But NMBS is currently putting them through an overhaul so maybe they have plans to deploy them elsewhere as well..?
I can only hope, they are in my opinion, the best!

The condition of the ground/earth is too weak to handle 140 kilometer an hour. The connection between the pantograph and overhead wire can go wrong.

It has been a while since the last post in this thread, but there is a small update on the new InterCity Nex Generation train from the opening post.
Yesterday, the new construction line from Alstom in Poland for the ICNG was officially presented to the press. There are numerous reports around the internet with pictures of the new trains under construction.

A few pictures by Treinreiziger.nl:

The cab (work in progress of course):

What's the rationale for replacing the koplopers with this stock?

I'd have thought it would be cheaper and easier to just order more VIRM's?

The (V)IRM is a 1994 design (earlier if you account for development), and although it has evolved and was built until 2009, that's like asking why the UK doesn't buy Networkers anymore.

The oldest ones entered service in 1983 and are thus 35 years old.

VIRM is a design from the nineties and the design does not meet the latest crash worthiness regulations.

Furthermore, NS want to move towards a fleet which is fully accessible to people with reduced mobility, without needing any assistance. Once all new sprinter trains have entered service this is the case, the intercity fleet is next to become accessible.

When the time comes to replace the double deckers, I anticipate that NS will opt for a design like the Desiro HC which is partially single deck (at 76cm platform height) and partially double deck.

Sorry I had realised how old the koplopers were having travelled on them since I was a child I just thought it odd that with the network growing so much they wouldn't all go to double decker. Are the new 4th and 5th gen VIRMs not compliant with latest regulations, despite being fairly newly built?

I take it once all new sprinters are in service the DD-AR and DDM can finally be retired for real this time?

No, the VIRMs are not compliant. As the life span of those units exceeds the date where all units should comply with the regulations, an exception to the regulations has been made for those trains alone.

The DD-AR and DDM1 trains will be retired next year, alongside with the class 1700 locomotives.
With the delivery of the new sprinter trains (SNG, Sprinter Next Generation, build by CAF), those trains are, indeed, no longer deemed as necessary.
SNG will enter into official service from this Sundays timetable change, but we have been running revenue earning trains with them as a test between The Hague and Haarlem for the past weeks.
The units are pretty reliable already in my experience. Only a handful of issues has been raised, but nothing too serious.
It'll be very interesting to see how things will turn out this Sunday, when all Sprinter trains between Haarlem and Leiden (and on weekdays between Haarlen - Leiden - The Hague) will be replaced with the new SNGs.

When the Class 1700 locomotives are shunted to the eternal sidings in the sky, their role on the IC Amsterdam - Berlin service will be taken over by brand new Siemens Vectron locomotives. Initially those will only be used between Amsterdam and Bad Bentheim, the loco change at Bad Bentheim will continue for the foreseeable future.

It looks that real stopping service in the Netherlands is/becomes white/blue and IC is yellow/blue. But some IC material is used for stopping service like Groningen - Zwolle and Leeuwarden - Meppel. There is also push/pull material with a locomotive that is totally yellow between Apeldoorn - Hengelo and Zwolle - Utrecht.

Once there's enough SNG, the ICM trains will be removed from those long distance stopping services.

For those who'd like to know... SNG has the same Fainsa Sophia 'ironing board' seats as being used in various new UK fleets. And I'm already reading complaints about how hard they are.

Those too will go when there's enough SNG.

The seats are from the same manufacturer, but are not the same type as the infamous ironing boards.
The Fainsa Sophia is the same seat that is used in the 2nd class of the GWR Class 800.
The ironing boards are the Fainsa Ecotren seats.

Not yet. This is just the base colour for testing. The train isn't finished yet and doesn't have an interior fitted, as it's easier for the testing programme.
There will be five trains, each with different testing purposes, e.g. a few will go to Velim (like the one in the picture) for dynamic testing, one set will go to Vienna for the climate tests, and the first one coming to the Netherlands later this year will also be the first with fitted interior, if all goes according to the plan.
This is the final livery:
