There was talk of XC changing their WiFi to free of charge but not sure if they've done it yet

c2c and TPE WiFi is free. WiFi is free in First Class on Virgin, CrossCountry and LNER, but payable in Standard. Standard class passengers booking LNER tickets through LNER's website receive a code entitling them to free WiFi.

Thanks to all for the info.

If things change we can keep this updated.

Personally I think that ALL trains (and mainline stations (Doncaster, Sttatford, Kings Cross, Waterloo Manchester Pic & Vic) should all have free access wifi. At some stations I can usually find a local business (Boots, House of Fraser etc.) with free wifi.

Free wifi at stations can have undesirable consequences (especially at unstaffed stations) as it can make the station more attractive to the local troublemakers.

Very pleasantly surprised to get good free wifi all the way up the relatively remote Cambrian coast line.

I use Virgin WC between Lancashire/ Manchester and Euston and it annoys me that we have to pay for it in Standard class yet its free in First Class!
Its free to use in Standard for the Beam service ...thats where you can watch films videos ? Never used it .No doubt it has ads.
I dont like paying for the basic service; seems we are subsidising First class? ...and I pay Virgin Media here at home for my basic broadband .

Hull Trains is free and normally quite reliable - unlike their trains.

BEAM videos are only on the 390s. Voyagers have magazines, newspapers and games but no videos. I don't recall seeing an ad but it has been ages since I watched a movie. I live in North Wales, so mostly use Voyagers or TfW.

You can use the VirginRed app to get free WiFi on VT West Coast in standard but you briefly have to look at one ad to get the code. I'll send you a link with an invitation if you are interested. (Mods if that violates forum rules let me know and I will edit this post)

Virgin Trains has free wifi if you have the Virgin Red mobile app and are verified with VT.
I recall that requires you to purchase a ticket through it. I bought a child single Stourbridge Junction to Stourbridge Town for 50p :P

CrossCountry are aiming for 31st January 2019.

I used TPE wifi for the first time today, as O2 was offline. I was surprised to find I couldn't access this forum as they use OpenDNS with a rule to block all forums and discussion boards. Seems to me like an odd choice of content to block.

It's currently in the test phrase, why that is I have no idea but that's from Cross Country themselves when I asked them recently about it.

It's not just whether it is free but how usable it is. I was on a transport for Wales service at Wrexham. It gave first 20mb then throttled back. My phone synced some mails and used that before I left the station. It was unusable after that.

dont they just piggy back on the 3g/4g mobile network? So when a train goes through a no signal area, the whole train goes off line. or do they use the railway GSM now?
