Dose anyone know how many trains (freight as well as passenger) use this line?

That's quite a generic question. Which part? Are you talking about trains per day or per hour? You are talking about quite a wide area as well. You could include all the trains that use GEML, plus all the trains that go Haughley Junc to Chippenham along with those that use the single line.

If you pop Soham into Realtimetrains and search for a full day that will give you a very good idea

This is a very very pertinent issue. The single line between Soham and Ely South has been a massive PITA for a while. From what I'm told they looked at doubling it a while back but the DFT had kittens over the costs because of the amount of piling involved. The single line is full. You will regularly get trains standing waiting for the single line. Doubling it would release a lot of capacity but much like Ely North the DFT doesn't seem interested.

8 passenger trains each way Mon-Sat, plus freight for which a number of Q (as required) paths exist.

The whole Felixstowe to Nuneaton capacity enhancement should be a full strategic project. Instead it appears to be piecemeal bits and pieces which won’t release much until they are all joined up, whenever that eventually happens.

Thank you.

That 8 TPD due to increase to 16 TPD (one train every 2 hours to hourly) from May 2020 under terms of GA Franchise Agreement. One of the many I will believe it when I see it commitments GA have made, pathing those extra services on the single line and then through Ely looks very challenging.

And 5 passenger trains each way on Sundays, 6 in summer.

Why is the 'early' train summer-only, anyway? It is really quite irritating to not be able to get to Peterborough (and hence most of the country) from Ely before 1130 on most Sundays of the year.

Simply Network Rail engineering access requirements. The route across there needs more maintenance than you would imagine. As for the service increase, that needs to get past NR's level crossing risk assessment process as much as actually finding paths.
