Location
A semi-rural part of north-west England
I remember travelling to the terminal Yarmouth Beach station in the mid-1950s for two holidays with family friends and the last time I was in the area, there were still a couple of cast iron canopy staunchions standing that had the crest initials of the original company enclosed within a circular frame. I think that station served many small halts could be visited from that station at one time period.

Is this a station worthy of being considered for this thread?

Some M&GNR station departure lists:
The Midland & Great Northern Railway (M&GNR) was owned by Midland Railway (MR) & Great Northern Railway (GNR). In the west, there were two sections. One line commenced at an end-on junction at Little Bytham Jn, on the MR branch from Saxby Jn, south of Melton Mowbray. This ran via Bourne and Spalding to Sutton Bridge; through trains avoided Spalding station, local trains used connection into the GNR Spalding station, where reversals were necessary to continue beyond Spalding. This route was joined at Sutton Bridge by a line from Peterborough, which left the ECML (GNR) and the Peterborough – Leicester (MR) line at Wisbech Jn, and ran via Wisbech North. After Sutton Bridge, the route ran via South Lynn to Fakenham (West) and Melton Constable, where the route split. One line continued via Aylsham, North Walsham & Caister to Yarmouth Beach; another line ran to Norwich City. After reversal at Melton Constable, another line ran to Weybourne, Sheringham & Cromer Beach.

There were several connections to other routes, e.g.:
South Lynn to Kings Lynn; Cromer Beach to Mundesley & North Walsham;
Yarmouth Beach to Gorleston North (on the Yarmouth South Town to Lowestoft line)

Many of the larger towns on the route were served by alternative railways (often at separate stations), whilst other stations served sparsely populated rural areas. The route was mostly single track with passing loops, and even the "express" services were pretty slow due to the need to wait at many passing loops. So, it was probably no surprise when almost the entire M&GNR system closed in 1959

Padstow also had SR services to Bodmin North and the occasional SR/WR through service to Bodmin Road.

Bodmin was a classic example of one of the missed opportunities of nationalisation, where instead of closing Bodmin North and concentrating on a through Bodmin Road to Padstow service , the old pattern of working was retained.

The service pattern at Plymouth etc didnt change much until the end of steam, apart from:
closure of Turnchapel (1950?)
withdrawal of the Belle (after summer 1954?)
closure of Friary to passengers (1958) with trains starting at North Road.

I have a note in my railway archives that the last passenger train from Turnchapel left there at 10:45pm on 8th September 1951, but goods traffic was still handled after that.

Can I ask if both Porthcawl and Brecon can be checked to see if either of these qualifies.

Yes - Brecon was planned to come next, and Porthcawl should not be difficult. Also under consideration are Cheltenham Spa St. James / Malvern Road & Oswestry. Other branch line requests welcome, provided they are spread over several weeks.

Very interesting topic.

Is it possible for Kingskerswell a small shack on the Newton Abbot-Kingswear Branch, I grew up in the Village, the platforms are stil visable through the undergrowth today. If not possible not to worry.

Thank you Bevan, very interesting.

Its interesting that it had a London Service, being the platforms were fairly small, would have that combined anywhere (Maybe at Newton Abbot?) also inbound from Walsall of all places.

Thanks again!

The weekday train London train would have been a portion (off the 1.30pm?) - but it might well have run as a separate relief train at busy times. Ditto the Liverpool and Manchester. Trains divided at Exeter or Newton.
The Saturday trains would mostly have been complete trains. I doubt if many local passengers would have risked them, though, as punctuality was notoriously bad in the down direction.

Melton Constable seemed to be something of a rail transport hub until its closure in the 1960's so can I add that to the list.
Melton Constable, October 1947
06:36 Norwich City
06:45 Holt
07:05 London Liverpool Street via Cromer High
07:17 Yarmouth Beach
07:30 Peterborough North
07:49 Norwich City (From Holt)
08:39 Peterborough North
08:40 Cromer Beach
09:34 Yarmouth Beach (From Peterborough N)
09:37 Norwich City
10:28 Cromer Beach
10:28 Leicester London Road (From Norwich, Cromer & Lowestoft)
10:41 Norwich City
11:45 Peterborough North
12:30 (SO) Norwich City (From Holt)
13:20 Yarmouth Beach (From Peterborough N)
13:27 Cromer Beach
13:32 Norwich City
14:23 Peterborough North
14:30 Cromer Beach
15:47 Yarmouth Beach (From Peterborough N)
15:55 (SX) Fakenham
16:32 London Liverpool Street via Cromer High
17:03 (SX) Holt
17:04 (SX) Aylsham
17:05 Norwich City
18:28 Lowestoft via Yarmouth Beach (From Leicester)
18:29 Cromer Beach (From Leicester)
18:32 Norwich City (From Leicester)
19:15 Yarmouth Beach (From Kings Lynn)
19:25 Cromer Beach
19:25 Norwich City
20:07 (ThSO) Holt
20:10 Kings Lynn
23:31 (SO) Holt
23:37 (SO) South Lynn

No Sunday services.
Journey times to/from Yarmouth were about 90 mins (all stations), 75-80 mins (semi-fast);
Cromer Beach 35 mins; Norwich 50 mins (41 mins on the service from Leicester, which was semi-fast)
Melton Constable had a small locomotive works for the M&GNR, but LNER took over all operations and loco overhauls from 1936.
Most of the M&GNR system closed to passengers in February 1959 (before I got the chance to do the lines), but Sheringham to Melton Constable survived until 1964.

I have edited the original SX version to add the 07:57 to Paddington, which was accidentally omitted. This joined the 07:30 from Plymouth at Newton Abbot.
The SX Manchester train attached to the 08:00 Plymouth - Liverpool & Glasgow at Newton Abbot.
The SX Liverpool service attached to the 07:30 Penzance - Manchester.
Normal procedure was for Newton Abbot station pilot to shunt one portion onto the rear of another. In 1960, they used a Class 03 or 08 shunter.

On Saturdays, the two Manchester services ran as independent trains from Paignton. Many Saturday long distance services from Paignton or Kingswear did not call at Kingskerswell; indeed, some also omitted Newton Abbot, Exeter and even Bristol. The Devonian had no booked passenger stops between Newton Abbot and Gloucester Eastgate, although there was probably a stop to change locos in the Bristol area.

Westbound, (SX) the 16:15 originated at Cardiff, and was combined with a portion for Plymouth as far as Newton Abbot.
The (SX) Liverpool, Manchester & Paddington trains were similarly detached from services to Plymouth (or Penzance in the case of the 13:30 from Paddington)
On Saturdays, westbound trains until 16:26 were all independent services; later long distance trains were portions detached at Newton Abbot.
The Walsall service ran via Birmingham New St., and also picked up passengers at Barnt Green & Bromsgrove.
No Saturday services from Paddington called at Kingskerswell; some also omitted Torre.

Many (but not all) trains from St. James also called at Malvern Road. Trains towards Honeybourne needed to reverse at Malvern Road and may have been "auto trains" (push-pull).

M&SWJR = Midland & South Western Junction Railway

It was an independent railway, built with some support from the Midland Railway (MR) & London & South Western Railway (LSWR) – but included in the Great Western Railway at the 1923 Grouping. Passenger services ceased in 1961. These services and Kingham services followed the same route as far as Andoversford Jn., then ran via Cirencester (Watermoor), Swindon Town, Marlborough to Andover Jn, continuing with running powers over LSWR via Andover Town to Romsey and Southampton Central
