Who remembers the Rail Riders club, and of course their two locomotive, 47406 and 47488? Do you think Network Rail should look at restarting the club?

I was a member and was thrilled when one of the 47s turned up at Newcastle! Would have been about 1988 or so. Wonder if there'd be enough members in this day and age?
My parents enrolled me as a member from a young age, the magazines were kept and I have them somewhere.
I have no idea when the club was formed but I think it was disbanded around 1992.
I'd say it would be more for ATOC to run it than Network Rail, as it was more about travelling by train and about trains themselves than the infrastructure. Also if vouchers, discounts and rides were to be given that would be difficult and costly for NR to arrange.
Would ATOC be interested? Unlikely! Should they be? Yes.

I have one of the badges still, but I think the mags went in the bin years ago. It seems that, looking at http://www.srpublicity.co.uk/brs/brs19.htm ) it survived until 1991 - I have no recollection of that new logo they introduced!

I was a member right to the end, the new logo came out when all the hype about the 91s first came out. I remember the stickers, family day out always revolved around going to museums or attractions that my sister and I hadnt got stickers from. Family railcard and rail riders vouchers always insured free travel for us kids.

Sounds like the Rail Riders and Great Rail clubs were good value for money! If I could pay a £2.00 annual membership fee for £5.00 of RTVs per year, I'd still be a member if the club existed today!SR Publicity page said:

Mind ye though, I couldn't see AToC ever bringing those clubs back to life. It seems to me that almost any initiative geared towards enthusiasts (Of any age) is automatically vetoed by them.

Rail Riders was great. I've still got a stack of the magazines in a box somewhere - along with at least one of the "free" gifts.
I remember getting a bit bored of the "sticker stations", I recall going to visit some whilst on holiday in the UK as a kid and finding they'd closed down or more often the staff at the venue ticket office didn't have a clue about rail-riders or the sticker scheme.
The vouchers were the best part about it.

I admit that my beard is almost as long as the WCML, but even that can be hidden on the membership card using Photoshop!

Indeed; With a quarter-fare Priv, ye'd effectively be getting £20 of travel for that two-pound membership fee...Four times better value than that offered to public members!

Bizarrely despite spending most of my youth on York station I never went to Rail Riders World. I did go to a Rail Riders event at the York Railway Institute though. They got a chap who had won Mastermind on a railway subject to attend and we were able to fire questions at him. Suffice to say, he didn't know the answer to mine!
One of my friends from school, his Mum actually worked for Rail Riders - everything for it was done by a company called 'Trainlines for Britain' which was based in Wetherby. Before anyone asks tho, his Mum was not one of the young female staff who featured in the magazine!

Were you allowed to use them to buy privelege tickets? I thought you couldn't.

Having never been a member of Rail Riders, I can't say for sure...But zooming in those images on the RR web page above (Right-click, "View image" in Firefox) I can't see anything to suggest that Priv holders are barred from using 'em!
