I was told this week that DB Cargo have lost the contract and work will pass to Freightliner.

Can anyone confirm or add to this?

Is Freightliner still split Heavy Haul and Intermodal? I thought they were abolished and are using there locos as a common user

It's reported elsewhere that the 59s need heavy overhaul and there was some talk of DB bringing some 60s back into action to take their place... that idea presumably now out the window though.

I was under the impression that the contract went to GBRF....

I heard rumours they annoyed some important people which lose then the opportunity.

I really hope the crew at the effected depots are redeployed, and don’t face redundancy.

Surely the best option is redundancy, with payoff, and then straight to the next door office and sign on with the new company. But maybe TUPE will be invoked.

Yes the Mendip contract has been won by FLHH from DB.
They have also had to purchase the 8 Mendip 59s, the 0s and 1s
It will personally effect me and many of my colleagues at various locations.
No idea how HH are going to resource the work unless they TUPE the current DB staff.

You keep your T&Cs for the first year.
Which in reality on the railway anyway rarely makes any difference as companies can’t then just decide single handily to impose changes without almost inevitably triggering some form of industrial action. I’ve worked alongside people on different pay & conditions for around 10-20 years

Why not? You can't have 50 staff on better t&c than the existing staff.... Not for long anyway
It's just something that we have seen particularly on the passenger side of the railways over the years. Under BR we used to rub our hands together at the thought of redundancy as it often led to a better paying job through overtime (officially we where not supposed to get promotion through redundancy) & also through redundancy travel. As I went from office hours to shifts & lived 20 miles away I was getting as much as £66pw enhancements for the latter way back in 94.

TUPE at freight isn't guaranteed. If there are more Westbury DB drivers than FL will need, they will make the ones they don't need redundant.

There will be some TUPE, some have come across to our place already (jumped before being pushed) and some have/will take the early handshake if it's offered.

This looks to be all but the end of DB in the South West. All they really have now is the small amount of China Clay traffic and the Milford Haven - Westerleigh tanks (worked by South Wales crew anyway.) They're barely clinging on in South Wales, just local steel and the oil trains left. The Dee Marsh steel went to FL, Aberthaw coal went to FL, the Cardiff oil tanks went to GBRf, haven't seen an MOD tank train for years and the Barry Dock intermodal tripper doesn't run any more. The Dagenham cars doesn't run much. The Bridgend Ford tripper is weekly at best and will no doubt cease in the next year or two as the plant winds down to closure. They have a small amount of long distance coal and steel. They have the RHTTs out of Barton Hill and Margam at appropriate times of the year.

I suspect one more contract loss in Wales and that'll be that.

The Bridgend Ford went over to Colas about a year ago, purely because DBC didn't want it any more.

Didn't know that - I've only ever seen the Ford vans in ADJ waiting to go to Dagenham. Another nail in their coffin

Not enough DB drivers at Westbury to cover the Mendip contract.
I think we have 6 MTD's and 6 GBRf driver's helping us cover the work.
Most Westbury driver's will be TUPE'd over as identifiable work in all links, all depending on how many driver's DB want to keep.

Jobs are secure for the Mendip work, FLHH have plenty of work in the south in the next few months and they need all the drivers they can get. Highly unlikely any redundancies will happen, actually expect recruitment to take place for more. Remember GB have been supplying DB with Drivers for the Mendip flows for some time.

59/0 & 59/1 fleet will be given works overhauls and then leased back to Mendip Rail for those flows. Its highly unlikely the 70s will be sent down south, more likely they will be off leased as planned in 2019.
