I'm Sorry if this question has already been answered, but I just needed confirmation.
My wife and I are travelling from Yarmouth (IOW) to London Waterloo, via Brockenhurst,we are using a off peak return, can we break our Journey for 3 nights in Southampton on the return journey, it will be within the 28 days validity, and will the Platform ticket barrier recognize this action.
Thanks for any advice, I Have asked at the Wightlink ferry terminal who sell rail tickets and they were not 100% sure.

Came here to ask a similar question - have an Off-Peak return from NOT-EDB in February, but intend to break the return journey overnight in LDS.

If the ticket is checked on the train, is it advisable to inform the inspector that I intend to do this so that they can mark / validate the ticket accordingly? What happens if I insert the ticket into a barrier to exit LDS - will the barrier return the ticket to me, or is it better to speak to a member of gateline staff?

There's no requirement to inform the on-board staff about your break of journey intentions. I never bother and I've never had a problem but there's no harm in doing so and it could (in some conceivable situations) help down the line.

I'd say it's quite likely that your ticket will work the barriers at Leeds (as Leeds lies on many valid routes between Edinburgh and Nottingham) but if it doesn't you should have no problem asking the staff to help. I think it's very, very unlikely that your ticket would be retained erroneously by the barrier and if that did happen they should be able to retrieve it for you.

Thanks for the information! :)

As others have said, break of journey is permitted with off-peak returns. But beware if you are using an m-ticket, the type that is bought on-line and stored on your mobile phone and that you have to validate before you start your outward and return journeys. There have been several reports on these forums that the ticket will "expire" one day after you have started your journey. If you are intending to break your journey overnight, it might be better to use another type of ticket, e.g. a traditional card or paper ticket bought (or collected) from a station, or a print-at-home ticket.

The barriers at Leeds often reject perfectly valid tickets, but I have never had them retain one.

For clarification the tickets are NOT marked as expired they are marked as used. When their validity ends they are marked as expired. The issues with these tickets is down to a poor design by the makers of the apps but mostly down to poor staff training and understanding.
Your ticket is valid either way. However given the op and subsequent posters asking similar questions speak about tickets in their paper form I’m sure all will be ok here.

I cannot find anything in the two posts from the original OP (stevedb11) about having a paper ticket. Agreed that the ticket, in whatever form, is valid for what the OP wants to do. I was just pointing out that other people using m-tickets in the very way the OP wishes have experienced significant problems, that the OP and others thinking of doing likewise may wish to avoid. That the problems are down to the app designers and poor staff training is of little comfort to the poor person who is on the receiving end. Far better to avoid the problem in the first place.

Agreed. I’ve been on the receiving end of it (And posted a thread on it). They picked the wrong person that day to use their made up rules on, or perhaps the right person as the issue has made it fairly high up and hopefully things will improve at least at that particular toc.
