Interestingly I've been noticing a few (normal, non enthusiast) people on Twitter messaging @scotrail on Twitter to say they are really impressed with the quality of the new Intercity trains.

When you check out their pictures quite often it is the "Classic" sets they are travelling on so there is a quality upgrade perception from 170s even with the unrefurbished stock.

This doesn't particularly surprise me but worth bearing in mind for any perception that a lack of a full set of refurbished HSTs by December 2019 will be a "crisis".

There will still be several problems from lack of refurbished stock:
  • Lack of CET toilets will be an issue with the RMT;
  • Need for DfT derogations post Jan 2020 may well be an issue;
  • Increased dwell times with slam door stock may prevent some timetable improvements.

But once the training issues are resolved I'm not sure that customer quality perception is going to be an issue with the Classic Stock.

Completely agree, from a passenger perspective classic HST’s are an improvement, a pretty significant improvement. The issues you list as problems is accurate but of little interest to passengers.

Great to hear that another HST may soon appear. I am looking forward to travelling on one. Maybe a Saturday morning service from Edinburgh to Inverness might be good as I am coming back from Austria.

As it happens, I got the train from Innsbruck to St Anton on Saturday. Double headed Siemens Eurosprinter locos and ten carriages.

The contrast with the junk 158 the night before was ever so slightly noticeable ..

I bet...! I know this is going off-topic, but I wonder what Scotrail could possibly replace the 158s with in the future? THe HSTs (in my opinion) are FAR superior to a 170 & light years ahead of a 158...not so practical for the more 'rural' routes though

The 158s will eventually be replaced by Scotrail/Transport Scotland issuing a specification for their replacement and inviting interested parties to bid against it. Speculation as to what that could be is pointless as it may involve product lines that are not yet in existence. Such speculation is definitely, wildly, off topic

A pity I'm not in Edinburgh. When I am I stay close to the Sub, and could catch it between Niddrie and Morningside.

I’m guessing the second set is going to Perth so that they can get Perth and Inverness crew trained?

I know it's off topic, apologies! I will just be glad once we have a fleet of fully refurbished HSTs running on the Inter7City network in Scotland. It's a long, slow & painful process, but I hope we will get there at some point....

I hope so - the refurbished set hasn't made an appearance on the HML at all, as far as I'm aware....not sure what training the Conductors will need, but I imagine us drivers will just need a quick brief on the working of the Traction Interlock/over ride systems - maybe just a traincrew notice?

I was delighted to get the refurbished unit on a trip from Dundee to Edinburgh on Monday. A pleasant surprise I wasn’t expecting

Very clean, bright and modern and comfortable.

Had a look in the First Class section and that looked good too - though no one sat in there.

Just passed the refurbished set, it's currently sitting in the southbound loop at Dalmeny (1608). It's in service as there are passengers on it, anyone know why it has been looped here (overtook it on the southbound Aberdeen service)?
EDIT: It was on a southbound service.

Another failure is disappointing, I saw it leaving Haymarket, looked pretty well loaded. Is it just 'one of those things' or is it starting to look like there are deeper problems with the HSTs?

The isolated ATP equipment (which ties in with the speedo) is causing problems. The powercars are now having it fully removed rather than isolated.

On Tuesday I caught the 14.51(?) from Perth to Inverness which was supposed to be an HST but was disappointed to find was a 170. I saw several other departures from Inverness Tuesday & Wednesday that had apologies for being only 3 coaches and no sign of an HST in service.

158 on Far North Line to Brora was OK yesterday. Not exactly busy. Only five passengers on board after I got out at Brora.

How utterly predictable. It just exposes ScotRail's lack of knowledge.

You'll be telling us next that ScotRail want the Brush electronics upgrade which includes a new Knorr-Bremse wheelslip control system that extends overhaul periods by about 100,000 miles.

They should've got that in the first place.
