1927 PAD - BRI is a HST

Hi All,
Please could you advise what would be the best way to get value out of this first class rover ticket that is valid for 1 month from 23/03/2019?

I was hoping to get as much classic traction in as possible and could you please advise what you think the HST diagrams would look like post 22nd March 19 for GWR services to plymouth and if first class will be retained on the GTI sets (2 + 4) that they seem to be proposing and if they will run padd - penzance.

I'm sorry for the essay, but you can imagine my shock when seeing the diagrams end on the 22nd when my ticket starts on the 23rd.

Best,
RE460
Hi, the HST GTIs don't have 1st class unfortunately and won't be running anywhere near London. No one can know the diagrams post 22nd March yet but it seems likely there will be a small number left covering Paddington to Plymouth, this will probably be vastly reduced compared to current diagrams though. Only thing that can be said for certain is that they won't be on any diagrams that start or finish in London anymore, so evening departures from Plymouth will be IET and there won't be any leaving London till mid morning at the earliest. As for classic traction, Scotland and getting value out of the rover I'd recommend doing the Fort William or Inverness portions of the Caledonian Sleeper before they're replaced, but I'm getting off topic.

Hi All,

Have bought a first class (8 days in 1 month) interail ticket to tour the uk and it starts on the 23rd of March 2019.

I see the current GWR HST diagrams come to a close at around this time but I was hoping to try and catch the last few in first class as I am told that these are the best seats on any train in the uk.

having a look at earlier posts (Thanks for the diagrams) I was planning something to meet with a friend in Plymouth on the 23rd and return on the 24th with HST haulage. I will be based in Sandhurst whilst in the UK.

As the post 22nd diagrams aren't published yet it hard to know what will remain HST and weekends are not really the best time to experience 1st class on GWR due to the reduced on board service, e.g. the obvious and wonderful to experience Pullman service doesn't run on sat/sun. However based on current diagrams and assuming your route needs to start at Sandhurst.

Sat 23rd, 8:31am Sandhurst > Reading > Paddington. This will put you on a turbo to Reading then a IET to Paddington.
Sat 23rd, 10:03am Paddington > Plymouth. Currently the first HST service to Plymouth having come up from Plymouth.

Sun 24th, 16:10 Plymouth > Paddington. Currently a HST that comes from the depot to form the service and goes to London via Bristol so you'd get to see a different route to the outbound.
Sun 24th 20:33, Paddington > Reading > Sandhurst. Will be IET to reading then turbo to Sandhurst.
or
Sun 24th, 16:10, Plymouth > Reading (arrive 19:36)
Sun 24th 20:18, Reading > Sandhurst (quite a long wait TBH)

In terms of Scotland and HST travel getting one of the services to Aberdeen from Kings Cross will guarantee a HST however the departure times from Kings Cross mean you'll be travelling in Scotland after dark.
ScotRail do not operate all that many services with 1st class so you'll need think carefully about which services you go for to I assume maximise travel mileage per day, this may for example mean you need to work on basis that experiencing the scotrail HST's is impractical.

If your ticket is valid on scotrail sleepers than using one to return to London would be economic use of the ticket allowing you to explore scotland in the day time then return without needing to use up another day for the return. A normal offpeak ticket Euston to Sandhurst would be more economical than using a further day on your pass, unless you plan to explore from London further that day.

Guess it's my first ride on an 802 today then...

That being said, my ride down was supposed to be an 802, but got changed for an HST at the last minute - no seat reservations as a result!

Thanks Mainline421, I have started a thread over in trip plans, would you know when they are being replaced? They are currently saying some time in 2019... Is there anything I should look out for on the sleeper? Am thinking of Inverness.

Thanks Wibble, I think the rules for interail have changed this year to allow travel before the sleeper but not after. Interail say: When travelling on a night train, you only need to use a single travel day: your day of departure. Even though most night trains leave on one calendar day and arrive on the next, you're never required to use two travel days.
But I will consider your suggestion of just buying a single ticket to save the day.

I think you are right that I am going to conclude that the HST GTI Scotland tour is going to be impractable. But I'm sure I can maximise my mileage just on HSTs...

As per posts #458 & #474, the 11.03 off Paddington is part of an HST diagram.

Thank You!

I'll aim for one of them then.

Im not sure if it's now switched to IET operation, but the 18:03 Padd To Penzance was HST operated this week until last night (Wednesday) when I arrived to pair of 802s. And duly waited for the 18:33 to Exeter!

Could this also happen to the 1C78 11.03 PAD to PYM from a HST to IET travel date 21/02

That’s a booked IET now. It’s a 10 car as far as Plymouth, where it splits with the front 5 to Penzance.

That should still be a HST as it now, though subject to change.

This seems a very tight turnaround time (26 mins) for a service that's come all the way from Plymouth; I thought normal practice for long distance IC was to have at least 35-40 mins, often 45 mins+ turnaround? In this example, could the 0808 from Frome not form the 0903 to Plymouth?

No, not always especially now as Old Oak has gone if that would make any difference as what ever set comes in then goes back out, usually on a west country.

The set from Frome’s next working departs 2 minutes before 1A71 arrives. There may not be a decent path to then get that set you have swapped out up to Reading TCD. Random swaps just to gain an extra 5 mins or so will not win you any friends with the maintenance planners!

Any knowledge on which power cars will be operating the Castle set in the near future, and how many Castle sets are now in service?

Cheers, I thought 43009 had been decommissioned just a couple of days ago. Just to clarify this is sets that have been out today.
