Gee a long run to Aberdeen with no speedo.

It' be in the rear cab if it was turned at Inverkeithing as was suggested. Would be the logical choice given it was a train loaded with passengers. Only reason not to would be traincrew knowledge.

And in the front for the return journey .It's possible the east coast guys in Aberdeen could get it fixed for the then.

LNER team would take one look at an ATP speedo and associated kit and go "what is that?"

I do believe they have some previous experience on the day the refurb was doing it's press run there was trouble with the speedo in Aberdeen .All sorted before it left and probably after a phone call or two.

That press run was a shambles. I seem to remember the train went faulty at Leuchars and was severely delayed.

How utterly predictable. It just exposes ScotRail's lack of knowledge.

You'll be telling us next that ScotRail want the Brush electronics upgrade which includes a new Knorr-Bremse wheelslip control system that extends overhaul periods by about 100,000 miles.

It's quite an extensive job, to replace the ATP speedo, but, yes, it should have been done during the power car refurb. As should the Brush electronics upgrade, with the Knorr-bremse wheelslip control system. An HST really kicks when it slips!

If it runs there should be an 5S03 1425 Doncaster Wabtec to Perth with the 2nd refurbished HST set.....

Saw the second set in Doncaster yard yesterday coupled to a locomotive (cant mind which one) appearing ready to go. Hopefully it won't be cancelled again today.

So today's my first time on a "classic" HST set. The GWR layout is every bit as horrible as I remember, with a total of (I think) eight standard-class tables per train; if it weren't for the fact that nobody's standing, I'd rather be on a 170. The really bright lighting and the tinted windows make it impossible to see outside in the evening, too. But, I realise this is temporary, and the quietness and lack-of-cold-draught is appreciated. It does seem to be quick off the mark as well, though that may be cancelled out by the manual doors at present.

But seeing the entirely empty first class coach has made me wonder something else: 1 out of 4 coaches is first class. That's a ratio that I've only seen before on Voyagers. Once the refurbs are done, and the seating returns to a sensible density, will the number of standard-class seats on a 4-car HST set actually be significantly greater than on a 170? Would hate to have all this disruption and not fix the overcrowding...

They should, and I understand it was originally in scope to be added as they go through Brush, but ScotRail took it out of the scope.

Short-sighted as ever.

The unrefurbished sets have a full First, the refurbished sets will lose 1/4 coach to the buffet. Actually the refurbished Trailer Standards will seat less than the GWR ones, 76 instead of IIRC - 84.

For refurbished sets:

2+4: 32 First, 206 Std
2+5: 32 First, 280 Std

An "Express" 170/4 seats:

18 First, 172 Std

So a 2+4 has 34 extra Std, a 2+5 108. Both having 14 additional First Class seats.

Ah, thanks. So there is an improvement, albeit not a very big one for a 2+4. I look forward to the refurbs!

Yes, a moderate improvement in purely terms of capacity with a 2+4, but I believe eventually most sets will be 2+5.

As do we all! ;)

It seems to have dispensed with the scheduled dinner break at Millerhill and is already on the Sub, so it's now ahead of time.

Do you know if the 4 car sets will also eventually be increased to 5 car, or will they remain 4 car?

I don't know if the 4-car will stay as 4 and five-car introduced seperately or what. Nevertheless of ScotRail want uniform 2+5 sets there are plenty of spare trailers kicking about - just saying ScotRail ;)

They'll remain as 4 car, though I believe that it's still the plan to form up two 2+6 sets from December 2022, with the corresponding reduction in number of 4 and 5-car sets by one apiece. That's assuming that Wabtec can get the initial order delivered by then!
