The BTP is investigating after a video was posted by YouTube prankster Ben Phillips on Sunday in which his half brother Elliot Giles was seen walking on a live railway with a scarf covering his eyes.

The video is believed to have been filmed in the Bridgend area of Wales and was seen more than 200,000 times before it was deleted.

A statement issued by the BTP said

Not only is it shocking to see that someone is willing to put their life in danger by blindfolding themselves and walking onto a live railway, it’s illegal and a criminal act. They are quite literally playing a game of life and death.

The railway is full of hidden dangers and we cannot overstate how dangerous it is to trespass. Trains travel at incredibly high speed and can often approach silently. This footage is being investigated.

The police seem to be coming down hard on these YouTubers who seem to think they can do whatever they like and I hope they do so with these guys. I would imagine their subscriber base to be of the younger generation who can be easily influenced by people like those named in the article above

I read the other day of somebody in the States trying this while driving. Makes this case look almost sensible by comparison.

Hopefully BTP will catch up with these idiots before others try it. At least the video has been taken down.

What happens on Netflix really should stay on Netflix - but occasionally it doesn't.

It appears the streaming services' latest post-apocalyptic horror film, Bird Box, has inspired some fans to engage in some pretty daft and dangerous behaviour.

The latest craze, known as the 'Bird Box Challenge', involves people attempting to undertake everyday tasks whilst blindfolded.

But it is feared one stunt carried out in South Wales has gone too far.

A police investigation has now been launched after footage emerged of a blindfolded man walking on live train tracks.

Netflix viewers say horror Bird Box is the 'most terrifying' film they've ever seen
Video of the stunt has been viewed nearly 200,000 times since it was uploaded to prankster Ben Phillip's YouTube channel on Sunday.

In the video, Phillips' pal is filmed putting on a blindfold and walking along a railway line near Bridgend, South Wales.

Phillips shouts "where are you going, there's a train coming," but his partner remains on the tracks while the sound of an oncoming train and a warning bell can be heard.

The Bird Box challenge is not a good idea, says Netflix

The stunt is based on the new Netflix horror film
The Netflix horror stars Sandra Bullock as a mother who wears a blindfold trying to avoid seeing mysterious forces that cause people to take their own lives.

She has to lead her two children, known as Boy and Girl, to safety - all while navigating difficult terrain when unable to see.

In response to the footage, British Transport Police issued a nationwide warning and urged people not to attempt the Bird Box Challenge on UK railways.

A BTP spokesman said: "Not only is it shocking to see that someone is willing to put their life in danger by blindfolding themselves and walking onto a live railway, it's illegal and a criminal act.

"They are quite literally playing with life and death.

"The railway is full of hidden dangers and we cannot overstate how dangerous it is to trespass.

"Trains travel at incredibly high speed and can often approach silently."

The psychological thriller which arrived to Netflix in December has been well received by critics.

But the streaming service was forced to call an end to the challenge at the beginning of the month after scores of people took to the craze.

Netflix said: "Can't believe I have to say this, but: PLEASE DO NOT HURT YOURSELVES WITH THIS BIRD BOX CHALLENGE.

"We don't know how this started, and we appreciate the love, but Boy and Girl have just one wish for 2019 and that is that you not end up in the hospital due to memes."

The challenge has already resulted in injury, with one woman in the US crashing her car whilst attempting to drive blindfolded.

Phillips' video also shows Giles walking on stepping stones across a river and along the top of a wall. The footage is being investigated.

It amazes me just how many people are stupid enough to film themselves breaking the law, publish it and then wonder why the Police come along and catch them. It's like the people who film themselves driving at 120mph on the motorway then find themselves with a driving ban in short order.

I’m amused by the line in the Manchester Evening News story “...but his partner remains on the tracks while the sound of an oncoming train and a warning bell can be heard“ as the sound of the warning bell accompanied by an American train horn has clearly been added to the video post filming.

I can't see any difference between these idiots and so called enthusiasts who think its OK to stand in the cess when a certain steam loco comes along.

other than the blindfold i agree!
Well you could argue that they are blinded (metaphorically speaking) by something. Certainly there's a large value resistor in their brain between the bit that thinks "I like steam trains" and that which thinks "I'm going to act like a responsible adult"

Darwin Award candidates.

Trouble is there are so many candidates nowadays. o_O

Indeed.

Isn't this all about the current need to generate more hits or likes? All froth and no substance IMHO but seems to be what many of the younger generation aspire to.

There was a period when someone on my Facebook feed kept sharing those "prank" videos. I blocked them after a while because the entire thing is so tedious and unfunny. This latest development honestly doesn't surprise me. I hope a precedent is set in this case, including getting their channel banned altogether so that there are fewer utter and complete twits online. Well, actively dangerous ones anyway.

About time people and the media started referring to this correctly as the Bird Brain challenge. By all means every single person who takes part (railway line, danger or not) passes, and deserves their just reward.

What should be the prize? Life long holiday to some kind of remote "idiots Island" perhaps?...

These YouTube fads don't usually last long. There was something called necknomination, which was about dares. That barely lasted 2 months. Before that, there was a fad for dressing as clowns and jumping out in front of people, also short-lived. Something to do with their short attention sp...... oh look a car!

What would be the most serious charges and the maximum penalty the law could impose?

As someone with a keen interest in wildlife, I take exception to that. The vast majority of birds are nowhere near as stupid as many humans.

I thought this was going to be a discussion about Network Rail putting bird boxes up on the side of the railway lines when I read the title.
