There’s no cross wires in the article at all. The pacers ARE getting a vinyl wrap. 150s and everything else will be getting painted, not wrapped.

We're three and a half months into the KA/TfW franchise, the pacers have 11 months left to go. Anything above any beyond essential maintenance at this point is completely daft and impractical.

The vinyl wrap on the pacers will be done almost overnight. It took them 3 days to do 175107 so a pacer will be quick enough. The plug sockets are a contractual requirement by 1/1/20, they just have to be done.

I'll believe it when I see it.

The power socket requirement was described back in June as:
"Power supplies will be available at over 95 per cent of seats across all rolling stock types by 2020, with 100 per cent roll out completed by 2022."

But we're also told that the Pacers will be gone by 2020 (or by the end of 2019). On that evidence, I can't see that the Pacers have to be fitted with sockets for the few months before they're withdrawn. The 150s would, as they'll still be in use after 2019, and make up well more than 5% of the fleet.

I don’t disagree. Just stating why.

Will all 175’s be going to Widness? Or is that just one of the places the painting is getting done?

My guess is it’s a contingency play just in case the pacer fleet isn’t totally replaced by 2020. Either that or it’s the ROSCO that’s forcing the issue as they may want to use them somewhere else?? (Not uk possibly). Purely speculation.

If they wanted to use them other than in the UK they would not be fitting UK standard power sockets.

It still strikes me as odd. Surely it'd be better to use limited workshop space on refitting the 150s in time.

I know you're closer to the coal face than I am, but I'll keep my scepticism on fitting the Pacers with power sockets until I see someone brandishing a screwdriver. (As for the vinyl work, I've no reason to doubt you on that.)

Very good point, but the electrics would all be in place to switch the sockets over.

I may not have been on the railway long, but one thing Ive learnt is that nothing is set in stone and deadlines come and go. So you’re right to be sceptical

The MR article suggests that the Pacers are not getting a full TfW branded vinyl wrap as seen on the two 175s that have been fully re-branded. It will just literally be more of the black vinyl advertising stickers, or 'mini-wraps' that we've already seen on a few of the 143s.

The painting of the rest of the units will be done in part in Liverpool, Chester drivers are signing the depot there as part of the Liverpool route learning so anyone can take a unit in. I can’t recall the depot, think it’s Allerton.
I thought the 150s are going to be TfW wrapped over "ATW" paintjobs...? 285 (the first PRM modified / socket-fitted 150) has been painted back into the "new" ex-ATW livery (as far as I can tell from the front-side view image I have) for the TfW wrap to go over it.

not wrapped like 107 and 003...?
It may be the case that they were given a quick wrap just so that there was some stock in the new livery asap*, but that they intended to paint the whole fleet when the time came.

*It'ss essential to get something in the new livery, or the media will have to use stock photos of the old operator's colours.

Does anyone know the current position with the class 230s. It strikes me that if they are not delivered soon the crew familiarisation procedures will not have happened in time for the May timetable

The posters on the main Class 230 thread may be able to help.

On that note, for the first unit (Conwy Valley), which depots would be trained? Do Holyhead and Chester both sign the Valley? (I presume Llandudno Jn does.)

Just Junction and Holyhead

Yeah, just them two. Instructor training has already started on the 230’s. Expecting a unit to be stabledbin the middle yard at Chester late February/early March. Get all the traction training done on that one then get another up on the valley for handeling familiarisation. On track as far as we’re all concerned.

Chester will need training soon enough anyway for Bidston, so you can bet all 3 of those depots will need training.

Beyond that, there are a few question marks about who will get to sign 230s. Shrewsbury conductors work a few Bidstons, and the Crewe - Chester shuttes adds Shrewsbury drivers, Crewe drivers and guards and even Cardiff guards into the mix on top of all the other depots mentioned earlier as well!

That said, Chester crews be busy route learning Liverpool, which I believe starts this week.

Same can be said for the 769s

Passed canton depot by train both sides (main line and Barry/Penarth. Refreshing to see only 1 unit out of use outside (153) and one 143 with temporary vinyl branding waiting to start a service - otherwise sidings and main shed empty of dmu's, but no fewer than 5 Colas class 70's stabled there.

Video footage of 285 in service (coupled to a 142) at 29:08. the lack of toilet window and a CET tank can be seen, and looks like new rubber on the inter-car gangway as well.

Any other PRM'd 150s anywhere near entering revenue earning service? It's less than 11 months until the deadline and there's only 2 x 150s out of 36 that we know of that have been fully modified - 150285 and 150284, with the latter still yet to appear in service.
Meanwhile there's no news on if or when any Northern Pacers might arrive to release 150s, and 769s haven't even started mainline testing.

I've worked out that to be ready for 1/1/2020, TfW need to have 4-5 units modified each month from around the middle of the year which is when a sufficient number of Pacers acquired from Northern will have hopefully joined the TfW fleet to cover for the units being modified during this year (Northern reckon they can start taking Pacers off-lease from May).

There's no guarantee of Northern letting go of any Pacers, at the moment they are holding on to their Pacer fleet very tightly.
And as for the 769s............
And there's no guarantee there will be enough workshop capacity to condense the mods plan into 6 or 7 months, along with mods for Northern continuing on their 15x fleets, although I'm sure I've read somewhere than Canton will be doing PRM mods as well

Was on 150285 this morning from Pyle to Cardiff Central (and it went onwards to Piccadilly) instead of the usual 175.

Toilets have taken out quite a lot of seats and room - which didn’t help on a packed train this morning.

It’s had a deep clean and PIS is the same as the 158s. Freshly painted in the old Arriva livery, which I found slightly bizarre.

A lot of grumbles that such a small train was on such a long journey at such a peak time.

I think it's a vinyl wrap and I can only assume there was a spare knocking around the depot and that was used.

Given that the transformation of the rolling stock is going to take a while, TfW have probably calculated that it's best to hold back on the cosmetic changes with the TfW branding especially so early on and given the 150s are 30 odd years old and *most* passengers will be *expecting* them to go soon.
