This morning was 142016 between Newcastle and Middlesbrough behind a 156. Headed the other way was 142071 and 142096.

With some 158s transfering to HT as from next week. This will see some 142s transfer to Newton Heath. North East sightings of 142s will most certainly reduce. Not sure which ones will transfer. But as Newton Heath based 142 units very rarely visit the North East, then I would expect the ones that leave to stay in the Manchester/Liverpool/Yorkshire area. I'll keep an eye on the ones that remain and keep reporting on here.

Do you know why Northern are sending the 158s to Heaton, and then transferring over 142s over to the North West? Wouldn't it make more sense for them to send the 158s to the North West where there is more overcrowding?

because north west will be the main benefit from new class 195s and 331s when they enter service from around may

I see. When do you think the 142s will be transferred? What routes will the 158s be used, do you think? I would imagine they would be used on the Nunthorpe-Hexham services, or Newcastle to Carlisle.

From next week they will be used on Carlisle to Newcastle and Morpeth routes only. The reason being is that not all NE crews have been trained up. Hopefully by April all the crews will be trained, so 158s should appear on Durham Coast services.

Does that mean the 142s will go to Newton Heath next week too, or will Heaton hang on to them a little longer until all crews have been trained up?

I thought the 158's were going to be reserved for the Middlesbrough/Newcastle(via the ECML) to Carlisle services(perhaps up to Chathill also?) whilst the 156's will operate the rest of the NE network like the Nunthorpe to Hexham services.

Of course the plan eventually(unless things have changed) will be the 158's will operate a more Express service to Carlisle serving Metrocentre, Prudhoe, Hexham and Haltwhistle* whilst the 156's will head to Carlisle stopping at every single stop so therefore a half hourly service to Carlisle with trains no longer terminating at Hexham for the most part. I suspect if all goes to plan, the NE should be pacer free soon if albeit perhaps not right away seemingly.

*I heard Haltwhistle may not be part of the stops for the Express service but I'm not sure if this is actually the case?

The likelihood is that 158s will be used wherever needed in the North East. Priority will be their booked workings but as is the case now where 156s substitute 142s occasionally. I expect this to be the same with 158s. The only reason for the restriction to a certain route from next week. Is that all the crews in the NE haven't signed them yet.

Does this mean they’ll cease using 142s on Whitby - Hexham services as of next week?

There will be still 142s around but not as many. Until all the Darlington drivers are trained on 158s then 142s will still continue in service. By April I would expect the training to be complete. Whether or not the remaining Heaton based 142s will still remain in the area after that I'm not sure.

Might be in the Sheffield area in two weeks. Any chance of seeing 142s?

Can the class 142 still be found on the Newcastle - Carlisle route? I always just see class 156 units on there now and with 158's coming, I would like to get a pacer on the Tyne Valley line one last time.

Best bet will be the 12:15 service from Newcastle to Carlisle(13:46 working from Carlisle) which is usually booked for a 142. I think the last train to Carlisle is also booked for a 142(with the first service from Carlisle to Newcastle being the same 142) but apart from that, I think they are all booked for a 156 only.

I might be wrong but perhaps your more likely too see a pacer on the Tyne valley line on a Sunday where the diagrams are different than during the week but I think Simon will tell you for definate.

As far as I am aware there are still quite a few diagrams where 142s are booked on this line. Without looking at the diagrams it's difficult to point out specific services. However with 158s starting in a few days, I expect 142s to be very few and far between.

Saw plenty of 142's around at Leeds today. Trying as best as I can to avoid them....

Ok, great! Any idea what services they work (I don't know this area well)?
I believe they do a fair amount of the Leeds stoppers (both routes), also Adwick stoppers (but these diagrams interwork with Hull and Bridlington stoppers, which also turn up 158s, Sprinters, or 144s). If you're there on a Saturday, the Cleethorpes via Retford often turns up a 142. They can turn up on the Huddersfield stopper, but these should be 3-car 144s. Basically, they're sure to turn up somewhere, but it isn't 100% set in stone on what exactly. It is worth remembering that 2 car 144s can and do turn up where 142s could.
Probably the best bet if you want to ride some in the Sheffield area, depending on your plans of course, might be to get a South Yorkshire day ticket (used to be a Travelmaster, I'm not sure what they call it these days) so you're covered whichever way you end up going (as far as the boundaries of course!).

Great, thank you.
