Has anyone seen a 142 on the Cumbrian coast recently? Are there any services that usually have a 142?

Probably the best bet if you want to ride some in the Sheffield area, depending on your plans of course, might be to get a South Yorkshire day ticket (used to be a Travelmaster, I'm not sure what they call it these days) so you're covered whichever way you end up going (as far as the boundaries of course!).

Here's the gen you need.

SYConnect+
Enjoy unlimited travel on any bus, all trams and any train anywhere in South Yorkshire for 1 day, 7 days, 28 days or a full year no matter which company runs them.

Usage Period Cost Where to Buy
1 Day £8.50 On Bus/Tram or Staffed Train Station

Enjoy

Only saw 2 today, and couldn't get the number of one of them, but:

142096 - 2N21 - 15:15 to Leeds via Bolton on Dearne (1st unit + 144 at rear)

All the ones where I've been seeing them recently were either 144's or 158's today, a lot might've been due to the bridge strike at Rotherham this afternoon though.

That's interesting as 2N21 is the one that runs to Heaton (Leeds-Horsforth then York and 5A60 to Heaton)

142017 in Bradford this morning. I think it arrives with a Huddersfield service at about 7.30am - a 158 pair - and gets uncoupled at Bradford. NO idea where it goes afterwards.

142087 - 2R31 - 06:10 Doncaster to Adwick
142086 - 2L20 - 15:02 Sheffield to Leeds
142022 - 2N16 - 13:48 Leeds to Sheffield (1st Unit)
142023 - 2N16 - 13:48 Leeds to Sheffield (2nd Unit)
Above 2 late into Sheffield, guess they formed the 2N21 15:15 to Leeds via Bolton on Dearne as usual
142015 - 2C70 - 13:53 Hull to Sheffield (saw at Swinton, in front of a 50, dark blue livery)
142024 - 2R70 - 15:24 Adwick to Sheffied

Looks like it goes out at 0922 as 5Y40 to Holbeck via a trip round Kirklees first - Halifax, Brighouse and Wakey Kirkgate

I saw a 142 on Monday - on my 1045 Lancaster to Leeds... RTT says "Pathed as Class 150/153/155/156 (Sprinter) DMU" but it kept time OK. it was warm, clean and bright inside, I appreciated the views out of the windows (but at the expense of crash-worthiness, I imagine,) the seats were very comfortable and the guard was cheerful too!
It wriggled slightly on CWR, but on the downside I thought the doors had been sucked off when we passed an EMU going south near Hest Bank! On jointed track the 2 vehicles really gave the gangway connections a hammering, and the noise was very noticeable. (Is it the only single-glazed DMU still around?) I was very glad when we got back to CWR at Settle Junction. The Sprinter I had on the previous trip over the line was definitely superior...

Not sure about discounts; I suspect not with a railcard at least as the argument with these PTE tickets is that they are already discounted.

As far as child discounts are concerned it looks like they are only available to people with a local card already

But hopefully someone local can help.

Cheers

Children under 11 (or who look under 11) don't need a pass, children 11-16 need a MegaTravel Pass, 16-18 year olds have their own pass (which, depending on when your birthday is in the college/sixth form year, can extend well past your 19th birthday).

Train conductors don't ask for them much, but you will get pulled up on buses (especially Stagecoach East Midlands) and on the tram.
