What is happening with Northern of late!? End of RMT strikes, electrics on the Bolton route and now they've sorted this one out too!
Were the 331s a separate agreement, or will this agreement also enable training/conversion for the new electric units?
Same agreement. Diesels first as they're most needed, particularly on Barrow route.

Excellent news the training has started.

So, to check I've got this right. The current plan is to introduce the 195s on the Barrow - Man Airport services which will run hourly via Wigan from May?

Driver Instructor training starts Wednesday at Allerton with a Big Bang of courses planned at 3 per week running simultaniously at Allerton,Blackpool N and Leyland once the pool of instructors are trained.

The course is 7 days on the diesel with a further 2 day conversion to the 331 planned in the future.

331’s however are now most likely to appear in the East first on Doncaster-Leeds services once introduced.

No, it will be many weeks yet before any are in passenger service.

Have they even notched up the required fault-free-running and been cleared to enter passenger service by the various regulators yet?

That makes a lot of sense regarding the 331s as Leeds is short of EMUs

Edit: Oops, sorry I'd posted a response to a earlier post about 331s & then realised we are in the 195 thread.

I am not sure how to interpret this tweet from the inspector of railways from last December.
It says 195s have been accepted, but is that accpted for fare paying passengers or not I don't know

That is Civil Service Speak for "We've accepted it, but I have to justify budgets for the hoards of middle managers so we'll find lots of little issues that will not affect passengers not one jot, but we'll still nitpick about them so that we can schedule another few months of telekits & meetings to make it look like we are actually doing anything..."

I've been in the public sector too long...… ;)

How can Leeds be short of EMUS when it got the five 322s?

They are quite intensively worked and there's a 333 refurbishment project ongoing so it's fairly routine for there to be DMU substitutions on any of the Doncaster/Ilkley or Skipton routes at the moment.

There is actually at least one morning diagram in for a 3 car 144, working ECS to Bradford Forster Square then to & from Skipton & back to Leeds I believe. Plus with the 321/322s in an ever worsening state, and as you say the 333s going into refurbishment (there are currently 2 done but not yet back in service), it won't take too much to need more DMU cover until the 331s start to land.

That 3 car 144 could be use elsewhere too to boost capacity. So if a 4 car 331 replaced it you could have 3 services strengthened. of course the pacers are going to vanish at some point so maybe not!

Got to say that people will be impressed with the layout inside these units. Had a good nosey at the inside of one that passed my unit, and there are a lot of table seats in them. Very much reminded me of when the 156s were first done up internally for Regional Rail Man Airport Services. I just hope Northern (and the public themselves ) look after these units inside. They're a world apart from a 150.

Have you watched the onboard video of 195-103...? It has prominent panel rattling issues similar to 172s
