Many thanks in advance.

Hello mate, if you’ve applied for the Birmingham or Worcester trainee driver job, I’ve just done the online assessment and it’s a multiple choice test with 19 questions. No time limit. It gives you a scenario that train drivers might face and you get 3 options for each. Not too difficult, just relax and take your time

That’s great, many thanks for the heads up. I’m assuming the questions are based around scenarios that require some common sense from the average Joe? Did it give you the result at the end?

No worries mate. Unfortunately no scores at the end, I think they’ll send an email another day. They’ve tried to make the questions sound like situations that train drivers might face, but like you say it is more common sense than anything else. Each question has 3 choices to pick from. 1 of them is the correct answer, 1 of them sounds possible but isn’t quite right, and 1 is just a ridiculously silly answer that nobody would ever pick. Do you think anybody ever picks the silly answers! Maybe by mistake! To give you an example, I remember a question saying, ‘you are handing your train to the next driver but the train has been making some funny noises today. Do you a) Take the time to explain the noises to your colleague properly, b) Quickly tell them so you’re not late, c) Just run away... I wonder if anyone picks C!

You should see some of the questions and answers for customer service based assessments! They are even more ridiculous!

According to Birmingham Mail newspaper, the last set of trainee drivers at Birmingham (May 2018) started on just over £25,000. According to Aslef, salary maximum is £53,587. I wonder how long it takes to get to the maximum salary, I can’t find any information about how quickly pay increases during training, if at all

I did my assessment last night. It looks like they are out sourced. Likely to take a few days at least before the results are made available.

If you are invited to the next stage you’ll receive an email with the sjt test link.

I got this invitation on Wednesday after applying on the Monday, I wouldn’t expect a reply so quickly, train driver jobs have the tendency to get inundated with applications so I hear, best of luck nonetheless.

I was also slightly concerned for you GG96LFC, it says on your account that you are 20, you are aware that the minimum required age is 21 right?

Have any Worcester applicants received online testing invites or just Birmingham?

I’d be curious to know whether other individuals who have applied also come from technical based backgrounds?

I personally have mainly been involved in electrical estimation for installation and maintainance.

It also looks looks like the closing date has been shortened from 18/02 to 15/02.

Im a qualified spark, currently working as an estimator. Everything from Electrical Installation to electronic security fire alarms and facilities services. Realised that the time has come for a career change as it was never the path I intended to go down. Back in 2010 I applied to Westmids Police and passed the application stage of the process, all I was waiting to do was the medical and fitness and I was in. Then good old David Cameron won a general election and his coalition government slashed police funding. My application was tossed in the bin. Anyone who's been though the police application process is not to dissimilar.

I have an old work colleague and a neighbour who both drive, it was their enthusiasm and love of the job that spurred me to put in my application. The biggest problem for me though is going to be the starting salary. It looks as though i'm going to stand to lose initially about £20K, this is something I will start to prepare now for should I be successful.

I've applied for Birmingham and still showing under consideration. Sent on 12th. I have no engineering background either but coming from 11 years in the police, which I'm led to believe is a positive. We shall see though...

When did you apply? And have you had an online assessment via email?

I applied on the 13th and have just received the online assessment invite. Noted the job has now also been removed from the site.

Just had the email now confirming passed first stage and onto the online assessment. Think they'll have quite a few applicants pass don't you?

Considering they cut it down from the 18th to the 15th then removed it early on the 15th they most likely have more than enough.

Although I’m sure we are all quietly hoping for as few as possible.

If we all passed the SJT, we should be soon invited to the assessments, sometime next week I imagine.

Put my application in at 10am today and got an e-mail at lunchtime about an online assessment, my background is NHS so I'm surprised my application was accepted as I thought a caveat was you needed a technical qualification ?
