I saw 039/057 at Salford Cent mate. I was on 142003 on 1J06 09:24 Southport to Leeds at the time. I was on 003 from Burscough Bridge to Leeds which was a decent bit of mileage for a 142.

After a year of hunting, I finally clear my final Northern Pacer. 142057 on late running 2L74 from Blackburn to Southport!

How many of these are going into preservation for railtours etc?

Unit 142001 is apparently going to the National Railway Museum in York for preservation as part of the country's railway history. I still think that a 143 and a 144 should be preserved too.

If there's any Pacer that's in a better condition than the others, I suspect they'd get preserved on some heritage branchline somewhere. The others that are in a more far worse condition would be stripped of parts to keep those in preservation going and with 93 class 142 units to choose from, there should be enough spares to keep a small preserved number of them going for another 30 years. I'm also including the better examples of the class 143's and 144's that could well end up running around in preservation with bits of 142 fitted to it (likewise with bits of ruined 143 and 144 fitted to a 142).

However the number of Pacers that may go into preservation is at the moment is how long is a piece of string?

There is a suggestion that 143625 should go to the Scottish National collection at Bo'ness as it is the last Scottish built train (Class 19 ex DVT aside...). Rather than a nice to have, this would actually fit in with the museum's collection policy.
