As well as being a railway nut, my enthusiasm for pubs knows no bounds - I'm deep into my logistically-challenging mission to drink in every pub in Yorkshire (currently on 1,187 out of an estimated 4,500). I have vast spreadsheet records of the pubs of Yorkshire and recently had cause to extract some of this into an 'options' list for a forthcoming rail-based pub crawl. The resulting document I thought may be of interest to some forum members and so is attached.

In short, the spreadsheet lists all currently-open stations on the national network within Yorkshire, alongside its closest pub or bar, split into various categories and with an indication of how far from the station the pub is. It should prove useful for anybody who, like me, enjoys nothing more than a rail-based pub crawl, or otherwise for bashers interested in where they can nip to when they have a long 'fester'.

For those who can't access the spreadsheet, the headline analysis of the data shows that:

- 10 stations have a pub actually on the station or within the station confines
- An additional 23 stations have a pub nearby with a railway-related name (Railway, Station, Midland etc.)
- 69% of Yorkshire stations have a pub within c.500m
- 88% of Yorkshire stations have a pub within c.1km
- 9 stations have no pub within 2km and are therefore deemed 'publess'

I should add that distances are very approximate, and also that the definition of 'pub' among pub enthusiasts can be contentious and so my own definition of a pub is contained in the spreadsheet.

As is the nature of the pub sector, the list is a constantly moving feast so I'll be continually updating my master file. Any comments or amends welcome!

Great spreadsheet!

Here's a question: How many of the closest pubs are Wetherspoons?

I used to keep a spreadsheet of pubs visited back in the day. Unsurprisingly there were plenty called The Station or The Railway.

Does Leeds City have the most nearby pubs?

Would depend how you'd define the area, but Leeds would certainly be right up there. Interestingly it has relatively few pubs west and south of the station, but obviously to the immediate north/east you have the heart of the city centre, and right by the station you have the charming circuit of Scarbrough, Head of Steam, Brewery Tap, Friends of Ham, Griffin, Tapped and Black Prince. Along with Huddersfield and York, it also has more than one station actually within the station itself.

Here's a question: How many of the closest pubs are Wetherspoons?

Glancing down, there's Leeds, Glasshoughton, Goole, Meadowhall, Mexborough and Scarborough, but there may be a couple more.

Come out of Leeds southern entrance and you can do a pub crawl without leaving Granary Wharf. You can drink beneath Platform 17. Several more 'old school' establishments within a 5 minute walk too.

Settle - Bar 13 is closer to Settle Stn then the golden lion
Garsdale. Even though the station is in Cumbria, the Moorcock is in N Yorks. Ignore the postal address, the county boundary is where the road to Sedbergh goes under the railway. And it was in the West Riding till 1974

Can I mention the Helwith Bridge pub. its between Horton in Ribblesdale & Settle. You can see the railway across the river from the bar and the dining room. There is a nice table in the dining room which gives you a grandstand view. No station but nice for gawping at trains.
No 11 buses from Horton and Settle, but only 3 a day!

Great food there in the Rhubarb restaurant - you can watch the trains go by from your table!

Good stuff. According to Google Maps, the Square and Compass at North Rigton is exactly 2km from the entrance to Weeton station. I've walked it a couple of times although I've taken the more scenic (and thus longer) route via Almscliffe and/or Huby village rather than along the A658.

What a tremendous resource. Thank-you. I shall be making good use of this during the summer!

Spoons-wise, the one in Todmorden is about 100m from the station, and on the occasion of my Todmorden pub crawl a year ago served better beer than The Queen! Mind you, there are probably a dozen pubs in Tod within staggering distance of the station...;)

Are you only considering stations on the main network? Only with several preserved railways in Yorkshire there are more pubs close to railway stations in the Worth Valley, near to the Embsay & Bolton Abbey and the N York Moors lines as well.

Thanks all! Have updated Settle/Skipton/Weeton/Wombwell and added a separate tab for preserved stations.

Brilliant resource, The Courthouse pub in Barnsley is named after Barnsley Court House station, whose building it occupies

Now this is what I call a useful resource!! Just one little temporary amendment that you might need for my neck of the woods, Baildon's Halfway House is currently closed as Greene King has bought it out & doing extensive refurbishment to it. So until mid-June, the closest pub is the New Inn on Otley pub, approx 100m from the Halfway House.

Can recommend the Tetleys at the Station, Silkstone Common. As I've got an hour here I can confidently predict I will be recommending the Timmy Taylors as well!
