Yes, it is possible on some systems but you may have difficulty finding someone willing to do it.

You can ask at the ticket office. It may or may not be technically possible to do in their software, and the clerk may or may not be willing do it for you. But there is no absolute entitlement to the excess. If you want to buy a new ticket instead, you can get a refund on the unused return portion of the Railcard discounted ticket, although there is a £10 administration fee with most retailers, and this may mean nothing is payable (as Off-Peak Singles are usually just £1 less than the equivalent Off-Peak Return).

It should be possible to pay an excess fare, but not all ticket offices will do this. LNER offices generally will. The difference to be paid will be to the undiscounted price of the return ticket - in this case there is no reduction for only wanting to use it one way without the railcard.

You don't say whether your solo return was planned or unplanned, but this is the example of where different tickets can be used with the railcard. You are supposed to buy an undiscounted adult return and a discounted child single.

I once had to do a return journey to 'deliver' a child somewhere (i.e. adult+child out, adult only return). I established that it was possible to get full railcard discount on one direction and no discount on the other. The fare paid was thus some cleverly-calculated compromise. Some on board crew were happy with it and some weren't.

That means that it was a very confusing conversation involving trying to unpick talking at cross purposes. I wasn't fully aware of the rules and was dealing with a clerk who wasn't sure.
