Great pictures Mike! The interior shot looks interesting. Those seats do not look comfortable but hopefully I will be wrong.

Interesting you should say that because I feel it’s the other way around with 80x seats. I think they look comfortable, like car seats in a way, but they’re not particularly comfortable when you actually sit on them!

I saw 802201 at Leeds on Monday night (https://flic.kr/p/T6PxZY) whilst on a test run from Neville Hill to Crewe via Huddersfield and Manchester and then filmed it passing Huddersfield.

If LNER were using the units to test, I would've thought they would have been testing them out between Leeds and Huddersfield since Azumas will be operating on that route but the TPE 802 didn't stop there so presumably they're just being based there for the time being for their tests. It was also crewed by Hitachi personnel.

Another interesting thing to note is that the rear carriage is missing seats completely

Aren't TPE getting different seats compared to GWR/LNER? That might be why they're missing.

Supposedly. There were seat displays in our training suite in Huddersfield that were billed as the seats being fitted to the 802s and mk5s and they were of a different designs to the default seats supplied by Hitachi. There were a few designs for comparison not only of the seat design, which is different on the two fleets, but also of the moquette which is slightly different to that fitted on the 185s.

I mean actual upholstered seats on display to park bums on and try out. I remember seeing 3 sets, two different standard class seat designs which had different moquette for the 802 and Mk5 seats - but in keeping with that used on the 185 - and one first class which of course was in the off white leather as sported on the 185s. I think these seats were also displayed at Manchester Piccadilly for a time (unless I'm getting confused with Northern's display when they appealed to the punters to choose the seat)

It does seem like a phenomenal waste of money to build them with the standard grey seats just to rip them out before they enter service. Or is this a pre-series unit?

All the artist's impressions showed them with the standard IET seat (the same rubbish GWR have) but with a moquette cover, so basically what LNER have done.

It's so rare that I actually get a seat on my daily TPE journey from Leeds that I wouldn't know if these are better or worse.

They just look to me like a slightly upgraded version of a seat you would find on a Firstgroup operated Wright Streekdeck bus!

I agree, I thought the interior looked comfortable if drab until I sat on one. Which was fine initially, but after about 20 minutes I had serious back and backside-ache.

The seats on the only 2 TPE Hitachi units in the country at the moment are test interior seats.

The whole interior of the 2 units will be removed and replaced with the spec TPE interior. The only other option was to delay the test units until the TPE spec stuff could be installed.

The rest of the TPE units being built by Hitachi have the spec TPE interior fixtures and fittings from the factory.

The 185s don’t have moquette. TPE are another WorstGroup company using cheaper seat coverings - in this case it’s flat cloth.

OK, with all 3 of Transpennine expresses' 3 new fleets under test on UK rails, which will be the first to carry passengers?

...until they run out.

At the moment at least they don't seam to have many used (whenever I have used it) but with only 6 standard seats per train when more people find out about it you may be right.

Both 802201 and 802202 have appeared at Eastleigh. Wonder why they've ended up there, interior fit perhaps?

Any word on the main series units arriving (802203+), given that the full complement of GWR 802s are now in the UK?
