Interestingly I also noticed this unusual path a little earlier, albeit not activated yesterday:

0D06 0953 Doncaster to Doncaster

http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/Y70002/2019/03/26/advanced

This is timed to sit in Leeds on P7 on arrival from Doncaster via Hambleton, then return the same way at 12:15. Possibly for testing 5 car 800s over the non-wired section?

I believe that is a standard route learning/refresher run (Thunderbird?), rather than an Azuma. It's a path that has been around for sometime.

Well there doesn't seem to be any other movements in RTT (although as we know this isn't always correct) & 1A30 12:45 Leeds-Kings Cross did run off P8 so I don't know?

Its headcode is 0, so it's a light loco. Probably a route refresher for a Thunderbird loco, although I don't know if it's ever been activated

0D06 (and a few other similar ones throughout the route) are indeed route refresh / learning paths.

They are all used periodically, on an 'as required' basis.

800104 is on platform 6 at York right now.

Maybe I'm imagining it, but is there something different about the cables/sockets between the carriages of this 800? There were a LOT of bright yellow warning labels and the bit of the carriage that the cables are plugged into seems very boxy (and incredibly shiny new compared to the rest of the carriage structure.

Probably my imagination.

5Q10 - 800111
5Q20 - 800104
5Q30 - 800109
5Q40 - 800103

5Q06 - 800106 Doncaster - Tyne Yard (storage)

5Q64 - 800201

So what is the score with the Azuma(s) at Tyne Yard, then? I spotted one there yesterday.

Kings Cross, Sat 23 March 2019.

You can understand the concerns over these cables though and why wasn't it originally picked up with the design of the first GWR sets never mind these LNER sets which the government ordered?!

Maybe some sort of webbing, top to bottom will sort the problem out.

Should have been exterior plug doors as well, making them look more sleek and Intercity like.

There were definitely a lot of new yellow Danger stickers on the flat bits between jumper cables today. Also matching yellow warning labels on most of the actual cables too.

Sorry to show & mention seats again.

So this is the final LNER standard interior.
Once again a chance missed to line seats up with the windows. What a shame.

I'm sure nobody will really be bothered as long as they get a seat once in squadron service!o_O

Sorry to continue flogging the dead horse of seating, but the Department for Transport/Agility Trains specified the interior as part of the IEP. The only input LNER have had is to change the decor.

Yes the decor is ok compared to GWR 800s which is garish with the green.
Yes the IEP and the cheapness was down to government procurement and yes LNER are an arm run for the government.
Still a shame that an Intercity train could not have seats lined up with the windows.
But train travel in the UK is all but non-enjoyable now, where at one time that was a reason for travelling by train, to actually enjoy the journey.

I can't believe people actually see these cables as anything but cables. What strange little fluffed up world we have to live in.

Both GWR and LNER are government IEP ordered sets.

That's the world we live in unfortunately. Most people wouldn't give them a thought but the odd idiot would. No need for them cables to be so open like that. Lazy, cheap design!
Yes I know who ordered the original IEPs. That's why there's not much thought for passengers.

I also thought that but David Horne in modern railways suggests not to avoid compromising timetable reliability.

So much for the "essential requirement" in the original specification about reliably coupling and uncoupling in a short and specified time !

I agree, however a tiny minority will see the cables as a climbing opportunity, and may well collect a Darwin award, or at least an honourable mention as a result of such climbing.
Therefore society must pay for the Anti Darwin modifications.
(Was it me who first used the term "Anti Darwin mods"? Fame at last !)

800104, 111 and 800 201 and 202, separated, were in York this afternoon. 104 and 111 were pristine as if they had just been delivered from Newton Aycliffe today but 201 and 202 were filthy.

All were on diesel.

I have yet to read the article for myself but from the statement you quoted that doesn't appear to allow speculation one way or the other as to the reason. My take was that LNER were concerned about late running portions impacting on time portions. Obviously yours is that it's due to a fundamental flaw with the units themselves. It's not clear to me that either of our views is correct at present so I'm not sure we can criticise anything as yet!

The direct quote from Modern Railways.

Modern Railways said:
LNER aspires to improve the service to Bradford to once every two hours, but is reluctant to adopt splitting and joining at Leeds, fearing this would introduce fragility to the service.

Cheers! Personally I'm not willing, on the basis of that, to state with certainty either way as to their motivation! I bet it's a mixture of both to be honest. Splitting and joining does add risk regarding late running portions delaying other portions and blocking platforms. Plus the risk that the coupling might not work. With an organisation like LNER which has no institutional memory of auto-couplers or even portion working (since that's not been a thing since at least the early 90s on ICEC) I can see why they'd want to do it with as lower level of risk as possible.
