Ealing Broadway-High Street Kensington 22-23 June 2019
First class £180, standard £150.

Join London Transport Museum for the last chance to travel on a heritage steam train through central London to celebrate 150 years of the District line. Steam trains served the District Railway when it first opened to the public between South Kensington and Westminster on Christmas Eve, 1868.
Recreate the experience of being one of the first Londoners to travel underground and let an original steam train transport you into the heart of the Capital between Ealing Broadway and High Street Kensington. Mingle with Victorian characters on Ealing Broadway’s platform, and soak up the atmosphere whilst listening to live music from heritage Victorian brass instruments.

This will be the last time steam trains are expected to travel into central London on the Underground network, due to signalling modernisation that will provide more frequent services and improved reliability on the Circle, District, Hammersmith & City and Metropolitan Lines.

Ticket sales look sluggish in comparison to the last 38TS outing which sold out within 24 hours more or less. I'm surprised this steam outing isn't more popular.

Considering we paid £40.00 each for 150th anniversary of the H&C line in 2014 which ran from Moorgate to Northfields I would tend to agree and am in no hurry to repeat the experience
If they can fill the train at £150 good luck to them

Any particular reason for the very expensive fares? Does it include silver service dining or a concierge?

VERY expensive and a less interesting route - seems absolutely ridiculous to me.

Indeed, I was thinking similar...I thought I paid about £50 for a Moorgate-Hammersmith return journey (steam one way, Sarah Siddons the other). I wouldn't have paid what they're charging for this!

In the FAQ they claim they "have tried to make the ticket prices as competitive as possible, and have kept them at
the same cost as those for the LU150 celebrations in 2013."

However they make no secret of the fact that they are making a profit to help support the charitable work of the museum...

Either way, very pricey.

Given that the museum needs to be operational and solvent to have events like this at all, I wouldn't describe it as profit, but simply a required overhead cost.

Yes I did think about putting the word profit in inverted commas.

Either way though, this is still expensive for what it is.

Maybe compared with an event where it is prices at cost plus straight profit that goes into the pockets of those involved. Given the uniqueness of this run, plus the fact that it is likely to be the last steam in central London LU ever, it is priced more like those celebrity dinner functions designed purely to raise funds for charity.

I say this as a Friend of the Museum for many years and also a sporadic volunteer. Even with a Friends' discount (I'm not sure there is one on this event), most of the special events the Museum runs these days are too expensive for the average Joe/Josephine.

I agree
This is no longer value for money
However if the market bears the costs then good on them

To contrast I would rather spend our cash going to Brussels in 2 weeks
They have a huge tram parade for their 150th
Public Running on the original line with 20 or so vintage trams and a 2 hour English speaking tour of the city by vintage tram
Cost of these rides etc once we are there
All free of charge

We did a lot of the things over the years but it is now priced over what we want to pay
( I am aware that some of these are nothing to do with LTM but they have the monopoly now)

Original steam on the met
Last A stock Ricky festival 2014
353 on steam on the Met Amersham to Harrow
Aldwych
55 Broadway Open House
150 years H and C
Upminster depot open day
Northfields depot open day
Sarah Siddons a few times ( including once in about 1998 when she appeared on an ordinary service train for the Amersham open day)

Having missed earlier runs I fully intended to ride on one of these - until I saw the price.
I expected they'd be around £80 and sell out very quickly. Instead I'll turn out for some photos; any recommended spots anyone?

As it's almost a month since tickets went on sale, it's good to see that none of the trains are sold out suggesting that I'm not alone in voting with my feet. Looks like they might run with a few empty seats.

The A stock didn't run on Ricky week 2014 but it did in 2013.

Presumably with the particular track layout at Wimbledon, if NR were to relay the P5 track we’d probably see the opposite situation, i.e. an NR engineering train in LU P4?
A

You mention the cost of the tram even as free and
Your going over to Brussels for that event

Excellent and good luck as I imagine a lot of the locals will know about the event as well as other enthusiasts so good luck getting on one of the trams as your not 100 percent certain if getting in a tour.

You are quite correct about 2013
It was only a fiver so great value
As far as the tour goes I am not too concerned being well prepared having applied for 2 places and having received an email that contained 2 sets of the below

Ticket pour: visite guidée en tram : tour en anglais
RDV: Place Poelaert (arrêt de tram)
Date jeudi 2 mai 2019 10:00
Prix 0 €

LU150 tickets weren't £150 in 2013, certainly not the one I bought anyway. Around £95 for 1st class IIRC.

Just to prove my earlier point, I have just received this in an email from the Friends of the transport museum:

The Museum has kindly offered to the Friends eleven places on a walk through the tunnels of the Waterloo & City Line. This unique opportunity had been secured primarily for Museum Patrons, but a few spare places are available to interested Friends who respond quickly.
The key details are:
Date: Sunday 19th May (when no trains are running!)
Time: 13.30
Starting Point: Bank station (to walk to Waterloo)
Cost: £100

at which point I stopped reading.

Would the W&C not normally be totally deserted on a Sunday? To be honest, £1100 to open it up doesn't sound desperately profiteering.

The W&C is entirely closed on Sundays, and rostering takes account of this.

Exactly - so there will be actual costs associated with them opening it up for people to walk through, and they aren't going to be a whole lot less than the total cost of the tickets.

It's 11 "spare" tickets that they have offered to Friends members after the patrons have taken up the rest. The total income will be more than £1100.
