Had an excellent trip to the Midland railway centre last Sat. So sad to see lots of almost new electrification piling plant parked up. Someone has probably invested there livelihood on a promise of work only to have it "Graylinged".
In a well run country they could be putting in piles somewhere. When post Grayling things eventually get un-paused prob have to buy new.
Clueless politicians make my blood boil. End if moan.20190413_142741.jpg

Too true! We still seem uncertain if the section of MML from Market Harborough to Kettering is going OHLE or buried feeder cable from the Braybrooke feeder station.....such an obvious decision, but soon the teams will have finished on the Bedford to Kettering section and then what.........Grrrrrayling!!

There's loads of plant parked at a heritage railway near me. That doesn't mean it's out of use; it usually works nights (and the heritage railway can use it if they want in the day).

You might want to review/edit your title. Autocorrect failure on “played”?

Aspin are owned by a private equity firm so no need to be worried that some poor codger has invested his savings and pension into some plant and his life is now left in ruin.

Aspin install foundations for signal gantries, platforms, retaining walls et cetera so it's not really true to say that it's "electrification plant". While it makes sense to provide a steady and predictable stream of work, the government doesn't owe private companies a living (Not that MML electrification was Aspin's sole workload).

Politicians aren't any more or less clueless than Joe public. While I think Chris Grayling's competence isn't great, constant indiscriminate MP bashing is unhelpful and does nothing to benefit society.

The first North West electrification projects (Phases 1 and 2, Liverpool-Manchester/Wigan) mostly didn't use piles (except across Chat Moss and a few other places).
They were the ones which came in pretty much on time and budget, and used concrete bases, like the older WCML and ECML schemes.

Love the speculation that its parked up and out of use.

The only electrification plant that is probably parked up out of use is sections of the HOPS train off of GWEP, pretty much everything else is still in use elsewhere. Yes at the minute work is quiet, probably why these are there and maybe doing a job for the railway center what couldn't be done before because they were busy on the mainlines

There's plenty of plant not just laid up but being sold off up in Scotland where virtually no electrification work is being done at the moment. A lot of the capabilities built up over recent years are being run down and in danger of being lost for future projects.

That's the point I wanted to make. As a retired engineer I'm fed up with clueless politicians and the over promoted clerks who seem to run things these days thinking they can turn engineering and engineers on and off like a tap. End of moan.
