There is a Laira-Long Marston GBRF today. Who knows if it will actually run though.

A GW-liveried set (all First blue except one green trailer) passed north through St Neots at about 19.25 today - no indication on RTT of what it was, unless LNER have hired one in for now? Didn't catch the leading power car but 43023 at the back.

41149, 40103, 42519, 44060, 40111, 41161, 42178 and 42195 (all Porterbrook-owned) were moved from St. Phillip's Marsh to Long Marston yesterday by 66716. 43160 & 43161 had moved them last week from Laira.

Some Mk 3 trailers being hauled northbound through Dawlish by a locomotive and barrier vehicles. I assume these are going off lease?

There was a move from Laira to St Philips Marsh last Friday, 5Z74 with 43056 & 43160 (still branded) taking debranded coaches. Then on Monday there was a move to Ely under 536X, does anyone know if these moves were related?

They may well have been related; there was another move straight from Laira to Ely today using 47815.

Ah thanks, I did notice the ROG 47815 with barrier coaches passing the sea wall around 113 minutes earlier than scheduled yesterday.

Are those stored at Ely visible to the public - will be some sad photos of them all lined up with nowhere to go

Some are - saw 43190, 43174 and 43024 yesterday en route to King's Lynn but they've been there for a while. Not sure if any others are lurking behind the rows of Mk3s or in any of the areas not visible when passing by rail.

I passed Ely a month ago, and i was surprised at how many vehicles there were there already at that time!

is there any indication yet that TOC's with stock shortages are taking up these HST's? Negligence and mismanagement to put saving money over tackling overcrowding.

Unlikely. 1st January 2020 is rapidly approaching and conversions for the few sets already earmarked to work elsewhere are behind schedule and probably not going to be completed in time.

Where would you want them sent to tackle overcrowding?

Anywhere that overcrowding from 2 or 3 car DMU's is a problem. Their speed potential would be largely wasted but, the passengers who previously had to stand wouldn't care. The railway is run for passengers convenience isn't it?

I don't know why I said that.......

Except that the HSTs are expensive to maintain, and are not suited to stopping services at all, as they're a lot slower than a DMU to accelerate

There seem to be overcrowded longer distance services, Waterloo-Exeter, Pennine, North and West line, S&C perhaps. Not all of them, just peak workings in some cases.

Depends on how you configure them. A 2+8 HST is sluggish, a 2+9 slightly more so.
A 2+4 HST can go like the proverbial off a shovel by comparison.
Although, that being said, they're not suited to 'stopping' services - they'd be much better on inter-regional diagrams in a 2+4 configuration, such as the Cardiff-Nottingham corridor, the Birmingham-Stansted corridor, and the Settle-Carlisle corridor (where I'm sure they could be used as "scenic trains").
Ultimately, it all boils down to cost, and whether our plethora of operators decides to take on an additional burden on a whim.

Ultimately it’s down to the DfT, not the operator. The operator can propose things but DfT has the final say.
