A cricketing footnote to the appalling news from Christchurch. New Zealand were due to play Bangladesh in the third and final test of the series at the Hagley Oval in Christchurch, starting a few hours from now. The Bangladesh team had been practising at the ground and, following a press conference at which their captain Mahmudullah spoke for eleven minutes, almost all the players, their manager and support staff, headed off to a mosque for Friday prayers in the team coach. They were approx 50 yards from the mosque when several things happened: two different people tried to stop the coach going any further, gunfire was heard by several on the coach coming from inside the mosque and at least two of the support staff at the front of the coach could see a body lying in the road. Tamim Iqbal, one of their most senior players, rang a Bangladeshi journalist at the Oval on his mobile and called for help, and three journalists ran the kilometre or so from the ground towards the mosque, located the team bus from which all had decamped but were, understandably, in a state of shock and they accompanied them all back to the ground where the pavilion went into lockdown. If the captain had been five minutes briefer in the press conference, then they would have been caught up in the violence. The tour has been cancelled and the team flies back to Dhaka imminently.

Whilst I’d love nothing more than to see Haz come back to form, eggs and hatching comes to mind, seen too many false starts before.

He does need to do something this year though given he’s in the final year of his contract with Lancs.

Day 3 saw Lancashire eventually all out for 427 with 122 from Rob Jones and 67 from Dane Vilas, with Middlesex in their second innings closing on 68-2, still 94 runs adrift.

I have not seen much of him , Although I hear he can get into the 90’s I suspect he is usually in the mid 80’s ?

We lack that consistent fast bowler that brings something different to our attack , while Anderson has been and still is an outstanding bowler he is now starting to struggle ( when the ball is not moving) due to his lack of pace. Broad imo is very hit and miss, we desperately need a Brett lee kind of bowler, although it’s not restricted to just England , I think in general there is a lack of real genuine, quality fast bowlers

Mark Wood is the usual fast pace bowler, his problem is he is injury prone. That however is not uncommon with fast bowlers. It's my view (only based on totally unscientific observations) that many are coached to limit top speed to offset the possibility of injuries as they play close to the edge of their capabilities making fast paced bowlers more susceptible to injuries.

A day of records broke at Trent Bridge for Lancs and Notts.

Notts won the toss and elected to bat, setting a target of 417/7 with Joe Clark making 139. This was Notts 3rd highest total in 50 over game and Lancs highest conceded score in the white ball game.

In reply Lancs fell just short getting 406/9 with Dane Vilas getting 166. This was the record highest total for Lancs in 50 over game and a record total for a player. Alas however it was in vain as Lancs fell 12 runs short of Notts total.

With the world cup looming and video referrals applied; what happens in this instance?

Last ball, 2 to win. Bowler thuds the pads and appeals and is given out, meanwhile the ball goes to long leg and if not-out the batsman would easily have run 2 leg-byes.

On referral, the decision's overturned and the batsman was not-out. However, the ball's dead the second the umpire says "out", game over, and denied those two runs?

As far as I know, as there's a referral, the ball isn't dead until a decision has been made.

However, if the batsman is decided to be not out, he can't run those leg byes, as the ball then becomes dead and the game is over.

As soon as the umpire has signalled out, the ball's dead, so even if they carried on running they wouldn't get the runs. It's only a matter of time before that happens if it hasn't already, and the rules may have to be changed so that the batsman can carry on running and then make the appeal to the "out" when the ball's gone dead.

Sam Billings return for Kent today resulted in a serious-looking shoulder injury in the first over. Joe Denly injured his back in the previous game too.

The one-day cup has been a nightmare for Kent this season.

For those who may be wondering, Saqib isn't the Mahmood we had years ago (that was Saj!!) - he's been quite a prospect for years (he's English, 22) but has had many injury problems; otherwise he could easily have been a test player right now. It's also a rarety that a bowler takes 5 in successive one-day games.

How different the Mighty are looking this season compared to last when Hameed forgot what a bat was for, runs from everyone else only came in fits and starts, mainly fits, Livingstone missed most of the season through injury and we were relying on Bailey for wickets with his strike-partner being the 132-yr-old Graham Onions. The only real brightness of last season was the introduction of Bohannon.

After the Bristol (alleged) assault Michael Vaughan, in his regular column in the Daily Telegraph, commented that he could think of no cricketer more unsuitable to accompany Ben Stokes on a night out than Hales: he left it at that, but I guess he and others must know a lot more about his character than is ever revealed to the public.

At least they had long boundaries so a six was worth a six. Today's semi-final is using the same track (I've been told) so it will be interesting what scores occur there (Hants v Lancs, 50 overs) and whether it will turn more towards the end of the day.
If Saqib can bowl like he dis at lords and rip a few out early, he might just find himself in the World Cup squad. Good for him and England...bad for Lancashire's promotion bid especially as Hurt's injured and Anderson will be unavailable when the Ashes kicks in

an absolute bobby dazzler! The looks on the faces in the crowd are superb.

it was a good win from England yesterday and shows how far we have moved on in the 50 over setting that i thought 311 might be insufficient and that loosing a key player early did not start the kind of batting collapse England have been familiar with over the years. That should settle any nerves
