I noticed on Saturday when the mini-HST was in Kings Cross it has an excessive amount of first class compared to the 180s (one of the end coaches plus the buffet/FC coach). Unless one of those areas is declassified it seems standard class passengers get less seats

It's only half a coach less. But there isn't as much difference really if you take away the cabs off the 180's. The Mk3 TGS takes of a few seats mind but no real difference in they amount.

A GWR HST has 84 seats in a TSO, and 76 in a TGS, giving 244 Std class seats.

A 180 has 230 Std class seats (272 in total)

Performance (a short HST will match 180 performance), cost, possibly platform lengths for starters.
Yes, apart from the initial start off the line - mainly due to drivers delaying the move into notch 5, the performance is almost identical!
But it looks like the schedule would handle the extra weight of 1 or 2 more coaches!

They're apparently getting a 2nd set from GWR, so they can have HST services during the week.

The set is currently in st Andrew's siding in Derby. Looks like it will head to Bristol at around 1000

The above set (023/027) is currently working the 1148 KGX-HUL. It's doing just the one trip to London and back today.

Friday - 0823/1148/1512/1848
Saturday - 0823/1148/1531/1948
Sunday - TBC but likely to be 1052/1448
Is the 2nd set going to cover Monday to Thursday diagrams?

One of the sets has just gone north through Derby. 43020 was on the rear I think.

I've just spotted a Mark 3 rake being hauled through Peterborough from Laira to Ely (via Bromsgrove!). Is this in any way connected to the Hull HST diagrams? I'm struggling to understand the purpose of the move otherwise. Looks to be 507Z on RTT and a one-off move. Perhaps freeing up sidings at Laira in the alternative?

Nope these are off lease HST coaches, being stored at Ely

Great stuff! All we need now is for the crew to start driving them like this!! Or recruit a few GWR guys ;)
