The LNER Mk 3 Buffet / First Class does have sockets throughout and there is one by the window seat in the vestibule in the Mk 4. I would have thought that a short formation set would be well within the power capacity to allow sockets throughout, can you really believe that <20 laptop chargers can overload the power supply in the existing sets? 60w per charger and you're looking at 1.2kw

The issue will be the power supply for that vehicle, not the set. The extra power needed may take the vehicle over the limit for the static converter after taking into account heating/aircon, lighting, catering equipment and other auxiliaries.

Don't the Mk4 SVs (Service Vehicles) have a lower ETH index than Mk3 buffets though? In fact possibly even identical to Mk4 seating coaches - 6X.

If they are marked as such I am struggling to believe it.

Just over two years ago we were having a similar conversation and you're intrepid correspondent had some time to kill at Kings Cross which lead to this post containing pictures of the data panels for a full IC225 rake. Not one of my proudest moments!

You are contradicting yourself against what you posted in the thread “ainsworth74” has linked to!

You know I had to actually look in that thread, I completely forgot I posted in it.

Well...I'm going to take the data panel at face value, it does carry the correct "SV" designation for a start!

Could the DVTs be refreshed to have seats in them, assuming the lower speed they'll be travelling in Wales?

It might be cheaper and better to ditch the DVT entirely and replace it with a Mk4 end coach. It might be less work to put a cab in the end (a bit like a MK2 DBSO) than it would to start hacking windows, seat supports, toilets, air con etc into a DVT.

Unless there are platform length issues, this is probably fairly pointless - if another coach is needed, stick another coach in.

What's it called? It's called Cumbernauld
The advantage of DVTs is that they can accommodate bicycles and large bulk items of luggage so as to save clogging up the coaches.

For example, I have seen at both London Kings Cross and Edinburgh Waverley bulk items for those passengers travelling end to end being loaded into the DVT.

The DVTs often get filled up when Durham University chucks out for the holidays/end of year, so their usefulness is often proven.

It’s never going to be cost effective to graft a cab onto a MK4 seated coach or add seats to a dvt and meet today’s safety standards. I’m sure such a mod would end up costing more than asking CAF to build some additional dtf’s .im sure the dvts will run largely unchanged.

But will that space have as much usefulness on Cardiff-Holyhead?

Luggage space is often an issue on the coast, and there are a lot of people who bring bikes along the marches, especially to Abergavenny.

On the other hand, it's also worth pointing out that there are several stations on the marches where a 67 + 4 will fit fine but a 67 + 5 will not, which will complicate things when more Cardiff - Holyhead services go loco hauled then at present.

But no, whatever the benefits of doing so are - there's not a hope of DVTs getting converted for passenger use. It's way too much hard work.

Id have to agree. What would be the point when there are loads of mk3, HST and mk4 all coming off lease anyway?

I never thought there was any chance of conversion of the DVTs, but I just thought the large luggage space wouldn't see as perhaps intense use as on ECML services. Though I imagine it will be very welcome for cyclists assuming it can be used for such a purpose without restriction.

The existing mkIII DVTs have bars for bikes to be attached to. And very popular they are too - the only restriction on their use being you need the conductor to open the DVT loading doors.

I was thinking a restriction on use on other than end-to-end journeys, but then the reason the ScotRail HSTs have such a restriction doesn't exist with DVTs of either flavour.

Bringing this back on topic, will TfW be altering the seating layout in the Standard Class Mk4s as they did with the Mk3s? They went from 76 down to 70 with the Mk3s.

No idea sadly. Given that LNER have yet to let a set go, it could perhaps be the case that TfW will want to inspect their first prospective set in situ (rather than on a computer screen), and maybe with all seats removed.
I'm hedging my bets on them not publishing any details until they have their first set on lease.

I suppose that would make sense for them to check things over first, I just wondered if there had been any mention of Standard Class capacity seeing as TfW have stated First Class will be 19 seats.

241 seats, 19 of which are 1st class.
