Trainee Mainline Driver Talent Pool - Northamptonshire
Drivers
Location: Corby or Kettering
Contract Type: Permanent
Salary: £39,126
Closing Date: Thursday 23 May 2019
Reference: 2019-136
An exciting and rare opportunity has arisen to join East Midlands Trains as a Trainee Mainline Driver in the Northamptonshire area. Due to an investment in our services from December 2020 there will be a twice hourly rail service between Corby and St Pancras delivering increased travel growth for the residents in the surrounding areas. These additional services mean we will require Trainee Mainline Drivers as we will be building a train depot in the Northamptonshire area, likely to be in Corby or Kettering. This route is currently undergoing significant investment from our partners at Network Rail and we will also see the introduction of new modern electric trains servicing the communities in Corby, Kettering, Wellingborough, Bedford, Luton and London. We are working with wider industry colleagues to finalise the exact details.

As a Trainee Mainline Driver you will automatically be enrolled on the new national Train Driver Level 3 apprenticeship programme when you join the Company. You do not require any previous qualifications but it is highly desirable for candidates to hold a Level 2 qualification in English, Maths and ICT in order to achieve the apprenticeship qualification. The apprenticeship scheme is a year long qualification and you will train alongside other successful applicants at our Training Academy based in Derby.

Successful candidates will need to be responsible and committed to providing excellent service through efficiency, high standards and most of all, safely. Once fully qualified as a Train Driver you will be required to work four days a week, where the working week is Monday to Sunday inclusive; and an average of 35 hours a week over the roster cycle.

We are therefore looking to build a talent pool of fantastic people who have previous backgrounds in operational and customer focused roles and live within the Northamptonshire area. The recruitment process is lengthy, but the role is important and we are looking for the right candidates with the ability to manage the safety critical operational side to the role as well as provide an amazing customer experience to our customers. You will be expected to undergo 4 parts of assessment during the recruitment process, which includes national driver testing which is conducted by The Occupational Psychology Centre, as well as successful completion of a driver medical.

The first stage of assessments dates are:

• Part 1 – Driver testing Stage 1: 11th, 12th and 13th June 2019

• Part 2 – Assessment Days: Early July 2019

• Part 3 – Competency based interviews: Late July and early August 2019

• Part 4 – Driver testing Stage 2: w/c 19th August 2019

Please note further testing and recruitment will take place throughout 2019/2020 in order to ensure all those successful at application stage are assessed. If successful you will be placed into a Talent Pool and be offered a role when opportunities become available. Training courses will commence at a number of dates throughout 2019 and 2020.

Please note the minimum age requirement to apply for this role is 21. We welcome candidates from all backgrounds. Women and ethnic minority groups are currently under-represented within our Driver population and are encouraged to apply as we value diversity and are committed to ensuring equality across our organisation.

The successful candidates will enjoy an incredibly competitive salary, and fantastic benefits including a defined benefit salary pension scheme, free travel for you, your partner and children on the East Midlands Trains network and discounted travel with other train companies, childcare vouchers and cycle scheme.

To apply please complete the online application form and upload your CV. As we operate a blind screening process please remove all personal information including your name from your CV. All applicants will be required to live within 60 minutes travelling distance of the Depot or if you are able to relocate please state this in your application.

They are recruiting for qualified drivers too. I imagine there will be some interest from displaced Thameslink Bedford drivers.

I assume the salary is a training salary? Quite good as a training salary, but not so much if that’s the qualified one ;)

They're looking for 40 odd apparently. Likely to be based at Kettering, perhaps Corby. I think the company have had some interest from Notts/Derby drivers living that way and Pancras drivers in the pboro/bedford areas, but clearly not enough hence the advert.

No one I've spoken to is interested. Even those living in northants.

If I was previously at Bedford and had been displaced down to St Albans or Cricklewood for death by Sutton loops I'd be all over these vacancies.

Application in. I’m sure there’s interest from all over especially if there’s 40 plus posts available as previously mentioned

I’ve thrown my hat in. I currently work in Kettering so it would be ideal.

I had previously been offered a place on an assessment centre with EMT for Derby Trainee Depot Driver, but I withdrew my application.

I’m hoping that won’t count against me.

Anyway, good luck to everyone who applies.

Probably don’t want to take a pay cut. From what I gather, TL are on a substantial amount more than EMT.

I wouldn’t have thought so but I applied for that and got knocked back so I’m hoping that doesn’t count against me!

Threw my hat in as well. Although I see that for uplodinf your CV they say (at the bottom of the application) to remove any personal details like name, etc. Unfortunately my changes didn’t save and they have my name! Is this a big issue? I have tried calling the number but no one answered it!
Thanks and good luck if you’ve also applied!

Why would they want any personal details taken off a CV? Unless I’m missing the point, the whole idea is that they are personal to each applicant :)

It was just the name to be taken off, not sure why to be honest.

Equal opportunities I think! They state it towards the bottom of the advert...

That's exactly it. The assessor will grade the application, CV and Cover Letter with no personal details attached. (It'll typically have a reference number attached to it instead) Once it's been graded, it's matched back up to the original applicant using the reference number so the result can be fed back to the applicant.

Interesting. I know recently from sifting applications myself in my current job we don’t have DoBs on them at the sifting stage anymore. I assume this is also to do with equal opportunities.

However, the last part of the application form asks for your name, DOB, sexual orientation, gender, ethnicity and religious belief? Strange that the CV asks for this to be removed!

The CV can be downloaded by anyone though and will eventually go to the recruiting manager, whereas only certain parts of the application form are generally made available to the recruiting manager. That’s what it’s like where I am at the moment anyway.

I'd love to apply for this, I'm currently coming to the end of my training for another company, should be qualified in a couple of months time, not sure how long you have to be qualified for though before you can transfer to another company. Abellio will be taking them over soon and that is who I work for now so fingers crossed I could get an internal transfer one day
Really sorry. Not to burst your bubble, it doesn't work like that. East Midlands Railway will be ran totally different to Scott Rail, Mersey Rail, West Midlands and Greater Anglia. If you want to apply for East Midlands you will have to submit an application form.
