I’m glad to see people use this to its full advantage!

I bought my Barry Links - Golf St. First Class ticket, one of the cheapest available (£10.80), and to boost numbers.

On Saturday my itinerary was:

05:21 Oban - Glasgow Queen St.
09:39 Glasgow Queen St. - Aberdeen
13:12 Aberdeen - Edinburgh
17:00 Edinburgh - Glasgow Queen St.
18:23 Glasgow Queen St. - Oban

(No travel on Sunday)

I enjoyed travelling on the ScotRail HST, especially in first class with all the free snacks and drinks a long the way. Definitely ate and drank way more than £10 worth of food and drink that day

I also used a season with this offer on Saturday:

I used a Golf Street to Carnoustie weekly season for £7.10 (Actually used the season on Friday too)

Itinerary:
0853 Dundee to Stirling - Guard accepted no issues
1001 Stirling to Alloa - Guard accepted no issues
1038 Alloa to Larbert - Accepted no issues
1106 Larbert to Dunblane (My first 385!) - Accepted no issues
1128 Dunblane to Edinburgh - Guard forgot but no issues when I mentioned the offer.
1243 Edinburgh to North Berwick - Ticket not checked
1320 North Berwick to Edinburgh - Ticket not checked (RPIs at Edinburgh accepted no issues)
1409 Edinburgh to Edinburgh Gateway - Accepted no issues
1425 Edinburgh Gateway to Edinburgh - Accepted no issues
Then had a lovely walk around Edinburgh
1527 Edinburgh to Haymarket - Ticket not checked (not surprised, very short!)
1553 Haymarket to Glasgow Central (via Carstairs) - Guard knew about the offer but thought they would issue a special ticket of some sort. Gateline staff at Central were also fine.
(Then 1800 GLC-Crewe and 2109 Crewe to Cardiff Central which was fun - Had advances for this!)

Seemed to me like staff had been briefed/reminded about it. Overall a great weekend, even if I did oversleep and miss the train to Springfield!
What a day out however I would have gone for first class for only £3 more.

Took advantage of this using my normal commute standard season ticket to go to Inverness.

No problems with guards (they only asked where I was going) or ticket barrier staff.

On the train south from Inverness, there were a few others taking advantage of the offer as well.

I took advantage of this offer myself yesterday, buying a Greenfaulds - Cumbernauld weekly season for the purpose. Virgin did better out of me than Scotrail though, the two getting £24 and £7.10 respectively.
Originally intending to head from Glasgow over to Edinburgh and a spin on the Fife Circle, plans went out of the window straight away because of a failed train at Edinburgh Park causing lots of cancellations and late-running, and I ended up first scratching some 385s, then shack-hopping on the North Berwick line, before a few moves on the Bathgate line. My smart-card was checked on most trains, generally without comment, but with a few guards needing to be reminded of the offer.

So all was well until, late in the day, one ticket-checker told me that I needed a letter of confirmation from Scotrail to make my ticket valid. No, I didn't, I said, and showed him the T&Cs on my phone. Still not convinced, he changed tack and stated that the offer was only available to those who actually suffered disruption at the time, making an assumption that I wasn't such a person. I wasn't of course, and admitted as much to him, but pointed out that Scotrail made no such condition anywhere in their T&Cs. He still wouldn't give up, and insisted I buy a ticket for the journey I was making, but as we'd just arrived at my destination of Bathgate, he had no time to sell me one, and told me I should buy one at the ticket office. Since I broke no rules, I felt no obligation to do so!

Slightly soured an otherwise enjoyable day, though.

Certainly worth making a complaint about - the attitude that it demonstrates is not acceptable for any member of customer-facing staff. Ignoring direct instructions/permissions from the company's website and attempting to extract additional amounts is serious misconduct in my view.

I would complain and get some RTVs out of it. I bought a golf St. - Barry Links 1st Class weekly (£10.80) and was informed from ScotRail that I am allowed complimentary food and drinks from the trolley even if the service only conveyed standard class, asked for a hot chocolate on my journey from Glasgow Queen St. to Dalmuir on Saturday and the catering staff member was insisting that I pay for it. Phoned up after and explained what happened and was gifted £20 of RTVs.

My itinerary for that day was:
06:30 SIN - GLQ 06:50 (Class 318)
07:15 GLQ - EDB 08:07 (Class 385)
08:33 EDB - INV 11:59 (HST)
12:47 INV - ABD 14:56 (Class 158)
15:38 ABD - GLQ 18:15 (HST)
18:21 GLQ - DMR (Class 156)

4 people 1st class for £21.60, not bad.

If you do this again then I recommend you buy the first class ticket above.

Would this cover me for a weekend trip to Carlisle via Gretna on Scotrail?

The website says "Season ticket holders on affected routes can travel anywhere on ScotRail services, accompanied by one extra person, for six specified weekends in March, April and May 2019"

Technically its a Scotrail service into England so would I be fine for that or would I have to buy a return from Gretna to Carlisle?

Neither England not Scotland are mentioned in their text. Simply "ScotRail routes" are. This wouldn't be valid on CrossCountry, LNER or TPE within Scotland, for instance.

Noting that you've been starting and finshing days in Oban, are you one of the people who was on first class on yesterdays 2015 Inverness to Glasgow?

Took a run to Dundee to see the V&A and then the Violet over the weekend, 5th weekend of this and the ticket examiner on the outward journey didn't seem to have a clue about the "We're Sorry" weekends.

Took advantage of this offer over the weekend. On Saturday I travelled through to Glasgow Queen Street and onto the 0823 all the way to Mallaig. I then caught the return 1605 back to Glasgow. Both units on the service were refurbished with the new seats. First impressions were of how firm they felt but surprisingly after a few hours they felt fine. The plug sockets and wifi are a welcome addition. The West Highland Line is amazing I and definitely recommend a trip to anyone who hasn't been.
On Sunday I travelled into Edinburgh and wanted to try the 'new' hst's. I took the 0929 service to Inverness. It was a classic set although it had been refurbished by GWR and had the new green livery and interior. The noticeable difference to the 170's is the acceleration and the increase in number of seats, it seemed too quiet for an Inverness service with only about half of the seats taken leaving Haymarket and around two thirds leaving Perth. The only issue was the station dwell times with passengers leaving the doors open and the conductor having to run down the platform at each station to close them. This service stopped everywhere north of Perth and we were around 20 mins late leaving Aviemore and 12 late into Inverness as we no longer had to wait to pass a southbound service. After a couple of hours in Inverness I returned using the 1518 service formed of the same set. It was fairly lightly loaded and was near enough on time throughout.
All but one of the staff were aware of the offer and many didn't even want to inspect my smartcard when I said I was traveling on the weekend offer. The only slight bother I got was from the woman on the barriers at Inverness. She seemed unsure whether to let me through or not but her colleague quickly let me through. There were quite a few passengers travelling on the offer as we had to ask to get through the barriers.
A very good weekend and excellent value for my £7.10 week season ticket I think!

I was also on the 09:29 Edinburgh to Inverness, although I was travelling in First Class, which was very well loaded.
I'm not surprised that you had difficulties with the barriers at Inverness - I've also been using a smartcard for this, and they've been absolutely awful at knowing what to do if a smartcard doesn't open the barrier straightaway.

Yes Inverness was a bit of bother but was helped with the gates being open on arrival so at least I only had it once when departing. Out of interest, did you have any problems travelling first class? The website isn't too clear as to whether first class season = first class weekend travel.

I had a couple minor issues with staff forgetting about the compensation weekend, although I only had to bring up the webpage for one Ticket Examiner on an Ayr bound service on Sunday.

The guard on a Mallaig - Queen Street service commented on a "good route" for Cumbernauld to Greenfaulds

@Mathieu ,

Firstly, thank you VERY much indeed for posting up this fantastic "too good to be true" offer and bringing it to my -(and everyone else here)'s attention!

I took advantage of this at the weekend and went off FC HST bashing and shopping in Edinburgh with a GBP10,80 Golf Street-Barry Links weekly! What a bargain!! I only wish I had logged on here and seen this earlier when you first posted it up back in March!
Had no issues at all with this in first on several trains on the Saturday and the coffee was most welcome too!

On the Sunday night however, I'm sad to say that I encountered one of the worst examples of railway "customer service" ever..
After having a look at the Royal Scotsman and new sleeper stock at Central, I attempted to board a Neilston and showed my weekly to the "gentleman" on the gateline at platform 5/6, -"hi, I'm using the free season ticket holder offer this weekend"..
I was met with great hostility as he quickly became extremely aggressive with me, insisting that it was only valid between Golf Street and Barry Links and nowhere else. I tried to explain that is was valid on ALL ScotRail services on the selected stated weekends and tried to show him the page on my phone but he was having non of it, talking over me and said what I was doing was immoral, fraudulent and I was attempting to avoid paying my fare, before threatening me with arrest for fare evasion by BTP!
I was just shocked and could not believe the way he was speaking to me like that after nothing but helpful and friendliness for all ScotRail personnel I encountred over the past two days.
I'm really sad to say that this overzealous? individual ended a good day out with some really negative vibes...

Another barrier boy on a power trip..!

Other than that, an absolute bargain and thanks ScotRail -(and to you guys for giving me the heads up here!) for a dirt cheap weekend rover!
Will hopefully use it again in two weeks time and maybe go up north, but maybe avoid Inverness gateline too from what members above have said regarding the CS there too?!

Certainly worth making a complaint about that. It's just not on to go threatening customers for arrest, let alone refusing entry, with a valid ticket.

I agree with Fortheloveof, please tell Glasgow Central station that behaviour is unacceptable.
I'm going to Inverness in a fortnight with a friend. Will see what staff are like.

I used this offer across the weekend and did see quite a few others doing the same. I used the Golf Street - Barry Links first class season ticket like most others and only had a couple of minor issues.

On Saturday the staff seemed to know all about the offer, the only issue was that a member of gateline staff at Queen St said I couldn’t travel all the way to Aberdeen as it was beyond Golf St! But after I showed him the webpage he reluctantly let me through. The only other issue on Saturday was gateline staff at Inverness being a bit funny about having a plus one on the ticket. However on the trains my ticket was accepted in first class no problem all day.

Sunday however was different. I travelled to Alloa on the 1015 from Queen St and just before Larbert I had my ticket checked. The guard initially refused to accept the ticket claiming it was because I didn’t actually do that journey and he said he was confiscating the ticket off me. I refused to give it to him to take off me or buy a new one, much to his anger. After he shouted at me that he thought I was a cheapskate etc, he walked off and didn’t come back. He had a very aggressive attitude to all passengers and raised his voice/ shouted at many others including a mum with two young children who seemed to speak limited English. After going to Alloa and back to Stirling I met with my plus one and boarded the 1141 Inverness. We sat in first and as it was full and standing it soon became declassified. Our ticket was accepted fine on trains up and around Inverness and back south to Perth. We then travelled on the 2112 from Perth - Glasgow and met another of the angry guards from ScotRail. Once again this guard raised his voice and was unpleasant. In the end he just got frustrated and walked off.

Overall a very good weekend for such a low price, only soured by some of the staff. But a complaint will be put in about them.

I hope you have reported that individual to Scotrail - behaviour like that from a member of customer facing staff is just totally unacceptable.

Yep I put a complaint in, I’d never experienced a member of staff like it before Sunday. I mean I tried to look at it from the guards perspective and even if he was having a bad day he was still totally out of line with me and many other passengers.

I'm planning this weekend using the £10.80 1st Class Barry Links - Golf Street. Did we ever get complete clarification on whether 1st Class can be used on all services or are people just doing it and not being challenged on it?

I'm thinking of taking advantage of this next weekend too. Having never actually bought a season ticket before...
It seems I need to have a smartcard first. And I can order that online... But might take 5 working days to arrive which might be too late for me to get it before the weekend. Is there another way of doing it - can I buy the season ticket at a station?

For paper season tickets you need a photocard. You should be able to get this photocard made up at the ticket office at a manned station. Need one passport sized photo for the card.

Cheers - does that need to be a scotrail station, or any national rail ticket office?

Photocards can be done anywhere. In theory, you should be able to buy the weekly ticket at any booking office too

Some of the Scotrail TVMs also allow you to buy weekly season tickets using the "tickets from other stations" function. Although you need to have a photocard, but can reduce any potential hassle if you walked up to the booking office at Glasgow/Edinburgh and asked for a weekly season between Golf Street & Barry Links.

Just a heads up - Scotrail's app (and website) has stopped sale of first class seasons between Golf Street to Barry Links. However, they've failed to stop sale of tickets from Monifieth to Balmossie, which are the same price

It would appear that they have removed these fares entirely from the fares data. And, well, I can't say it's not justified - the only trains which serve either station don't have first class accommodation!
