Isn't it strange how the BBC hide the British Steel story today, which threatens thousands of jobs, half way down its business section? The Daily Telegraph is the same. Front page news? Not if it's negative for Brexit.

The British Steel story was definitely on the front page of the BBC News website for a while in the afternoon. It may have been pushed down as the day went on but it certainly started as one of the side stories on the front page.

Considering that the Brexiteers keep accusing the BBC of being anti-Brexit and not impartial, that’s an interesting counter-claim.

As an outside observer, apart from failing at the outset (along with many Brexiteers) to realise that the UK border in Ireland was going to become a massive issue, they have by and large to me managed to steer a path across the minefield that is covering the story.

They interviewed Vince Cable about it on Today this morning.

I wonder what Farage and co have to say to the South Wales Honda workers as well as the Land Rover workers who will soon be on the dole.K

It's in Swindon the Honda job losses, not South Wales (although Ford is shedding jobs there as well). It is looking bleak for the British car manufacturing industry, not helped by BREXIT.

Something like very sorry but it's worth it to get away from all those foreigners.
I don't particularly like the European Union with its bureaucracy and restrictive practices but just like our unions UNISON, ASLEF etc not being in is prob not a good idea.
K
Someone else asked what restrictive practices so I'll point out that EU bureaucracy is either unnecessary and so we should have pushed for its abolition completely, or necessary and we'll have to duplicate it and pay the full cost instead of a fraction. Walking away without attempting reform just condemns us to loads of costs while British businesses now have to deal with both UK and EU bureaucracies if they export to our biggest markets. It's daft by any sober analysis.

Although British Steel in Port Talbot (and elsewhere) is also at risk for Brexit-related reasons.

Same news in Portugal, though they're words from Liam Fox: "Either vote for the deal or face either No Deal or Revocation".
The vote is expected for the window between June 3 and 7 so that Brexit is carried on before the end of June.

I remember when I still used to believe that meant they had a plan

Oh, but there is a plan.

The plan is for the Conservatives to get some "good news" announcement out in the week before the election, to show Conservative-leaning supporters that the party is doing something about leaving the EU. It's an attempt to stem their predicted losses as they haemorrhage votes to the Brexit Party and elsewhere.

A seriously bad turnout for the Conservatives will reflect badly on both the party and the leader. (They've already had a drubbing in the recent Local Government elections, as did Labour.) Mrs May is trying to avoid that. As for how successful this attempt will be, well we'll see...

Okay, I admit they usually still have a plan. The problem is that the plans they have are always terrible and never work. I really meant that I used to believe they had a slighly cunning underlying plan and were at least a little bit competent at this whole politics business. Turns out they've got nothing - they actually think the obvious clunker plan A might be worth pursuing.

I mean I could do a better job, and I'd be terrible at it.

Meanwhile the last two banner ads on the forum have been appealing for businesses to re-locate to Germany.
We're doing our part!

NB: Just in case anyone takes that seriously we don't have control over the adverts they're fed by Google.

Everyone will see different ads, they're based on things like your search history, websites you've visited in the past and your location.

My thoughts entirety.
Today I went on an most excellent if sad rail tour if Scunthorpe Steel works which mad me realise how vulnerable our steel industry is. No car factories equals no steel and Brexit means trying to compete with China to sell it elsewhere. Total madness.
So to add to my question about what message the Brexiteers have to the car industry workers heading for the dole add the steel workers too.

Is the possible 2nd referendum also going to have a question for leaving Eurovision?

I'm sorry
Watching some over-excited British nobody come last in Eurovision is one of the highlights of the UK entertainment calendar. Nobody would ever vote to miss out on that!

1. Completely off-topic
2. Why aren't the jury and public scores combined in the first place without this ridiculous second round?
3. The UK would stop coming bottom if it actually had a half-decent song. If Ireland and Australia don't vote for us that shows just how bad it is.
4. If Scotland becomes indy they will enter and walk it.
5. Gibraltar should enter - especially the year after Spain wins.

Perhaps we can do a deal that will allow us to come last without going to the bother of entering a song.
I think we've seen enough deals designed to keep us in the club and paying the money but getting nothing in return.

Sounds absolutely fine for those who prioritise preventing the break up of the Tory party over that of the U.K. itself.

I think there's a fairly high chance Farage has done that for us - a big split of the Tory vote could well mean a non-Tory win at a General Election, if there is one.

God help us all! If there is an election, a Johnson/Farage coalition is the most likely outcome

That's why the Tories will die in a ditch to avoid a General Election. They would much rather install another leader voted for by about 0.3% of the population and keep on pushing the national pedestrian propelled carriage down the slope towards the fiery pit.
